of course, this most obviously stems from how his squad treats him, but it goes as far back as his time in the mansion.

n felt responsible for tessa and her pain. he was so sure that if he worked hard enough, long enough, he could keep everyone safe. whenever he made a mistake, tessa would get the brunt of it. he'd see her get yelled at or physically harmed for his mistakes, and that burned into his mind. the idea that someone else could get hurt if he messed up even the smallest thing was so, immensely painful for him.

he doesn't remember it, but the scars of it are still there. maybe its for the best that he doesn't.
