Rook was so distracted by the sight of Neve's smile, she didn't see the feather coming. Her nose crinkled involuntarily as the bristles brushed lightly across it, tickling gently over her skin. Not for the time, she was caught off guard by how even a gesture so seemingly insignificant could make her heart skip a beat in its easy familiarity, like they'd known each other forever. She listened as the detective explained the purpose of the maps on her desk, and couldn't help but grin at the affection in her voice when she mentioned Assan. The whole team knew Neve had a soft spot for 'the bird.' It was no secret. A dozen clever comments came to mind upon hearing her intention to throw her lot in with the griffon, but Rook liked seeing that side of her too much to tease her for it.
"Well, sure. I'd bet on him, too," she smirked, "But I can't admit that to Davrin. I'd never live it down." She perched on the edge of the desk, careful not to disturb Neve's work, and turned her attention to the task at hand. "Not certain I'll be much help, but... I'm here, if you need. Do you plan on going after this guy?"
"Complicated, try impossible." She turns her head toward Rook with a smile and her smile grows before she lifts a hand and gentle flutters the feather against her nose. "There is an artifact smuggler who has taken inspiration from our recent plight in Docktown and I am recreating what I think is.. his.. route." Her words drift off as she clocks onto the challenge that she was saying a moment before. "You realize I am going to have to side with the bird, every time. Right."

Rook & The Veilguard: [breaks every box, back flips, explodes shit with magic, demon assassins, fire breathing qunari, killing venatori left and right, magic arrows, skeleton butlers scurrying, loudly talking about Elven Gods, accompanied by a goddamn griffon and shit]

Rook walked towards the detective, slower now that her curiosity had been piqued. When she reached the edge of the desk, she placed both hands on the hard wood of its surface, and leaned in, her head tilted slightly to the side, examining the maps, "You know, figuring out who has better aim between me and Assan doesn't seem so important anymore. Recreating a theory, huh? Looks... complicated?"
Without looking up from the overlapping maps, a divider in one hand, and an orange in the other, she speaks, "Recreating a theory." After a moment, Neve sees the orange down and plucks up the pen and just before she reaches to dip it in the ink she turns her eye upward. A smile already pulling at her lips - this should be good. "Talk to me, Trouble."

"If there's one thing Solas loves, it's telling people they were wrong." (Or, as I like to call it, Rook being a smug little shit.)

@coldjustness as requested, a paragraph for you 💜

"Hey, Neve," Rook burst through the door to the study with a determined grin, not even bothering to knock. She was on a mission. A very important one, "I need your help settling a bet. Davrin thinks that I- Uh... What are you doing?"

“Nothing? In Minrathous?” Rook smirked playfully at the detective, “Now, where would be the fun in that?”
Truth was, Rook could come up with a whole list of things the two of them could do together, and they didn't involve stopping murderous blood mages, or stumbling on a random demon summoning in the Catacombs. Most of them had to do with the way Neve's eyes had flickered to rest on her lips, for the briefest of moments, in the same breath as she'd told her to run. If she was trying to warn her away, it wasn't working. It was far too late for that now.
Rook pushed the thought aside. Or tried to. What was she going to do? Kiss Neve in the middle of the market, for all of Dock Town to see? Well… there was that alley around the corner that would- No. She shook her head sharply, trying to get it together. Lines.
They were in Wharf Crossing now, and Rook could see the red plaster of the Cobbled Swan ahead. Neve had mentioned a ritual inside the Catacombs, and Rook thought briefly of the one that had cost the detective her leg. When Neve had told her about it- or rather, mentioned just enough that Rook could draw her own conclusions- she had tried to offset the seriousness of the moment with her customary sarcasm. It had worked, or at least prompted a chuckle. But there was nothing funny about the conversation they'd had. In truth, Rook had been touched that Neve trusted her enough to tell her about it at all.
“The Catacombs, huh?” They'd made it to the Swan, and she pushed through the heavy wooden doors, and into the tavern. The sound of raucous laughter, and a familiar song drifted towards them from the back room, "If that's where the night takes us, I'm game. I've got your back.”
"And if the impossible happens?" Rook held the door open for the detective, and grinned, "Well then, I guess we'll just have to make do."
I'm with you. No truer a sentiment that could be reflected in three little words. Almost a reflection of three other more terrifying sentiments, but Neve couldn't get ahead of herself. Not yet anyway. It was still an odd thing still that Rook had yet to get fed up with their little casual hours together turning into world ending cases. The other Shadow Dragon had learned quickly that life by the side of Neve Gallus would never be an easy time. There was always a case to work, there was always someone who needed help, and as long as corruption existed in the streets of Docktown. As long as their city was under threat, they would never know rest. They would know no respite and yet... Neve feels her brow soften briefly at the thought. And yet, Rook was still here. She was still tagging along, she was still helping, and she only got excited when the trouble came calling after them. It was almost too good to be true, and that was another sentiment that was always true for the Detective. Something always goes wrong somewhere, whether they wanted it to or not, regardless of whether or not the ones involved chose it. That's how it worked the luck that she had, or lack of it more like.
"Oh absolutely not." A reply with the settle of her scepter on the ground as she stepped with the balance between her heel and her prosthetic. "However, I can promise you a wretched time with the worst possible timing and in the worst possible weather." Another turn of her head toward Liv and her tone lowers with the tilt of her head toward her. "You better run while you can or you may be caught up in another case, chasing another lead." Her eyes are drawn downward to Rook's lips before her mouth quirk again. So easily did her thoughts return to that day at the docks...
"Assuming we stay outside that is." She draws back and returns to keeping an eye on her path. "It may just take us into the catacombs again." She thinks about that one more time, before she speaks, "Or into another ritual, inside the catacombs."
Sweet Lady of Victory, there was always a ritual happening somewhere. Always a blood mage trying to push the limits of the fade and made it everyone else's problem. Always so willing to let Docktown suffer for a little bit of gain.
There is a sigh with their own reflections, Neve was never going to escape Bellara's accusations of becoming serial material, would she? Her fist grips around the pommel of her scepter as she pushes the thought away, "Or perhaps by predicting all of this, the impossible will happen..." A moment wait to build up the dramatics - and Neve spoke again, "Absolutely nothing."

Livia often wears outfits with dark colors and red accents as a sort of petty act of defiance against the Venatori, since those seem to be the colors that the cult has decided to use most, over the years. Her own private, spiteful joke.
BUT, when she goes out with Neve, when they’re not on a job, she dresses in outfits with lighter colors, accented in teal. Another kind of message entirely. She wonders if Neve notices. Neither of them probably talk about it.
#(still need a tag for them)#(no joke I always put liv in the fashionable leathers for A Study of Dock Town and A Clear Mind)#I just need the general consensus among the team to be ‘oh you clean up nicely’)#(and in her mind she’s like ‘how can I express interest in the most subtle way possible? oh! i'll wear her colors)#(which is… decidedly not subtle but it is very livia lol)
