Music and Fashion at the Smithsonian Institution

Whenever I need inspiration whether that be in my clothes, my everyday or just life in general, my go to muses are always the people who I love in music and their fashion. From Stevie Nicks, Diana Ross, Beyonce and so many more, their fashion choices along with their incredible music have had such an incredible influence on so many people and even have had influences on the trends we see today.  When I looked up to see if there were any institutes or museums that have either an archive or exhibit showcasing some of the iconic pieces of clothing from music history, I stumbled upon the Smithsonian Institution’s website. Here they have incredible photographs of the pieces worn by some very famous musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Celia Cruz, Prince and many more. I’m very excited that I found this archive of photos and cannot wait to explore it more! Rebel, Rebel: The Iconic Style and Sound of David Bowie

When I think of someone who was able to master the aesthetics of their fashion to their sound in a very creative way, the first person I think of is David Bowie. This rock icon was not afraid to take risks in either department. From his many eras, each had a unique vision and sound. My personal favorite time of his career was during his Aladdin Sane and Ziggy Stardust eras. Something I feel like Bowie was able to accomplish so well was establishing a look that when you would see it out, you would think of him. A perfect example of this is with the lighting bolt symbol. Whenever I see it I think of David Bowie and this iconic picture.

Artist Spotlight: Kacey Musgraves

Over the past couple of years, country music has had a resurgence. From pop country to a more traditional or roots-inspired sound, there has been a noticeable shift in the country music landscape, with artists like Kacey Musgraves have explored many diverse influences,  bringing a whole new audience to the genre and creating a newfound appreciation for country music. Musgraves notably received her big break after the release of her Grammy-Award Winning album "Same Trailer Different Park" in 2013. Her 2018 album "Golden Hour" was the album that introduced me to her music and I have been obsessed ever since. Though I was never really a country music fan before listening to her music, through her collaborations with artist such as Zach Bryan, I was able to discover these sub-genres of country music that I had never known about. Her fashion choices within her performances, music videos and red carpets all tell a story. For example in her music video for the song "High Horse," there is a retro, '70s-inspired aesthetic in with her outfit that perfectly matches the disco elements that are found within the song.  Whether you seek musical innovation or fashion inspiration, Kacey Musgraves is a compelling figure whose artistic expression transcends traditional boundaries.

The Crossroads of Fashion and Music

Both fashion and music are powerful forms of self-expression, and they often influence and inspire each other. In this video essay by Bliss Foster, titled "Fashion's Intense Relationship with Music", Foster explores the intersections of these two worlds and how they play a big role in each other's influences. Something I never realized until I watched this video, was how important music and media is to fashion runways. If you are a lover of music, fashion or even just want to start getting into these realms a little more, looking at the dynamics of music and fashion with some of your favorite artists is something that can start to introduce you to so many new designers and/or artists. Overall, this video was a great intro to the explanation of how much music influences the world of fashion and fashion runways. Stay tuned for more content! xoxo, Disco Éternel

welcome to disco éternel

Welcome to the first post on Disco Éternel.

Ever since I was little, I have always had such an affinity for the world of music and fashion. More recently I have gotten in to looking into how these two worlds intersect and bring inspiration into my everyday. My goal with this blog is to document my research and open up to a whole new audience to this amazing world of fashion icons and superstars in the music industry. I hope that Disco Éternel becomes a space where one can learn and gain inspiration from the posts.
