I don’t want to keep cows just because they make milk. I’ve made jokes about how I should collect my dog’s shedded hair and sell it to make coats with, because she sheds so much. I’m not/wouldn’t be keeping them JUST for the products I can get off of them.

I want to keep cows because I enjoy caring for cows. I love being around cows. Their milk is a means of paying my bills so I can continue to care for cows. Being a steward of a population of animals can mean culling to keep the population strong and healthy but it’s not a decision I enjoy making. When an old cow that had trouble breeding back catches I get really happy even if her calving interval will be much longer than ideal. You have to do what’s best for the whole herd.

The money is usually just an afterthought or a means of softening a blow. If I wanted to be rich I’d be anything other than a farmer. But I want to raise cows.
