You know what’s a full time job??? Having to defend myself every time someone finds out I’m a Taylor Swift fan. I swear it’s not like normal people are going to hate on you for liking ANY OTHER ARTIST. They’re simply mad you like a wildly successful, talented, and popular artist. GET OFF MY BACK.

starting a new series called the “the fathoming” in which i connect taylor swift lyrics to other taylor swift lyrics because i do that all the time and it could be fun.
series 1: “best laid plans”
we first notice the mention of “my best laid plan” in folklore’s “hoax”. she says, “my best laid plan, your sleight of hand, my barren land, you are ash to my fire”
we hear the term “best laid plan” again in “The Black Dog” in which taylor says “and all of those best laid plans, you said i needed a brave man, and then proceeded to play him, until i believed it too”.
the connection between the two songs is quite strong when you really take the time to grasp the themes of both songs. in “hoax” and the “The Black Dog”, the overall theme seems to address a loved one who is no longer in taylor (or the narrator’s) life. there are reoccurring mentions of deception, heartbreak, and resentment. for example, a common thread i have seen is the mention of a broken heart both figuratively and literally. in “hoax” taylor says “my broken drum, you have beaten my heart”. similarly, in “The Black Dog” she says “into some bar called the black dog, and pierce new holes in my heart”. another example would be this implied theme of mockery the person she is addressing has partaken in. in “hoax” she says “you knew you won so what’s the point of keeping score” where in “The Black Dog” she says “were you making fun of me with some esoteric joke?”.
the imagery between the two songs is very stark in describing the cruel acts of the person it’s written about. there’s an overarching concept of betrayal (specifically of trust), deep hurt, and deception. “The Black Dog” seems like it’s a sequel to “hoax” in which the writer experiences a deeper realization of how that loved one has skillfully deceived her into believing he was truly looking out for her and loved her. “you said I needed a bravе man, then proceeded to play him, until I believed it too, and it kills me.”
all further fathomings are invited!!!

with all the themes of torture, death, and loss in #TTPD , you know Taylor has mastered her skill as a writer when I feel this haunting and harrowing feeling that I can’t shake off after finishing both albums.
I don’t care what anyone says about the album, if you can’t appreciate its artistic and expressive value, you simply haven’t grasped it yet.
She didn’t just release songs, she gave us a true look into what it looked like to be in her head at the time. She did it well enough for me to feel this looming darkness over me.
Congratulations Taylor, another fantastic work of art.
Love,
A Tortured Listener
