LAST BLOG - BLOB (Psychrolutes marcidus)
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Scorpaeniformes
Family: Psychrolutidae
Genus: Psychrolutes
Species: P. marcidus
The blobfish is a beautiful boy and I have waited to do this blog on him for the last forever. This is the last organism of the week and DANG I’m so excited for this school year to end
Tumblr media
He lives in a pineapple under the deep waters off the coasts of mainland Australia and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand. His relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as he primarily swallows edible matter that floats in front of him, such as deep-ocean crustaceans. He has been known as the world’s ugliest fish which I personally find sad as hell.
Tumblr media
As for the sexy stuff, the blobfish mates whenever he runs into a blobfish of the opposite sex. When they mate the male’s um, sexy bits, fuses to her body. A female is known to lay up to 1000 pink eggs at a time, where she stays with them, floating above them the whole time as if to protect these beautiful children. He evolved when he moved to greater depths then he lost his bladder so that he could live with very little competition and not need as much food. In conclusion, it’s been fun and I hope you’ve learned something, but in case you haven’t, here’s an SNL skit about a very beautiful blob mermaid.

Please watch this, Kate McKinnon is a goddess.

Pyrosomes! Yeet
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Urochordata
Class: Thaliacea
Order: Pyrosomida
Family: Pyrosomatidae
Genus: Pyrosoma
I am so tired. It’s so late. This blog post will probably be bad but I have no more motivation at this point. So let’s get right to it! Have you ever loved your friends so much that you wished to clone them into thousands and sew your tissue together for all of eternity? Yeah I haven’t either, but that’s how the pyrosome do! A pyrosome is a colony of a bunch of tiny individuals that work together to propel the body of the colony forward in motion. The tiny individuals are called zooids and wow man are they interesting.
Tumblr media
These cool kids are big enough to fit an entire growing human inside, though why you’d want to do that I don’t know. All of these babes are connected by something biologists call a “gelatinous tunic.” They can grow to be up to 60 feet long! Another interesting name associated to these queens is the “unicorn of the sea.” They are so wild even scientists find them mysterious. They appear to be scary and horror movie villain but in actuality they are very delicate and fragile. They’re also bioluminescent, fun fact. They are filter feeders and mostly eat plankton, but when they feed on this krabby patty stealing green man they propel their body forward by excreting with such force they move. Fun Right?
Tumblr media
They reproduce asexually by budding off smaller colonies of some individuals who then clone themselves. They are mostly found off the west coast of North America. They are free floating, but their evolutionary origins are unknown. So thanks for reading my blog! See you next week!!! Im gonna die!

DEEPSEA LIZARDFISH (Bathysaurus ferox)
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Aulopiformes
Family: Bathysauridae
Genus: Bathysaurus
Tbh can deepsea lizardfish be my stripper name? These Lizardfishes are gorgeous babies and wow they’re quite ugly but I still love them. Their lizard-like bony head is flattened, unlike in most fishes, and an enormous mouth is filled with multiple series of long, sharp and needle like teeth. At the beginning of the century, Bathysaurus ferox larvae were thought to be a distinct species called Macristium chavesi, which YEET evolution whats up. Deepsea lizardfish are typical inhabitants of the deep ocean floor. I mean they are called deepsea,,, lizardfish so…
Tumblr media
They will not hesitate to eat anything they meet, including their own kind. You spicy lads you ;) now on to the REAL spicy stuff. They have both male and female sex organs! Fun times in the ocean. Another fun fact, they have teeth on their tongues! Don’t french kiss a lizardfish, not that you’d want too. They grow and develop large pupils they also grow and expand their livers. Okay great, all you fun deep sea fiends! Until next week.

Pelican eel! (Eurypharynx pelecanoides)
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Saccopharyngiformes
Suborder: Saccopharyngoidei
Family: Eurypharyngidae
Genus: Eurypharynx
The Pelican eel is one of my favorite things ever, not just because I love the word pelican, okay maybe. There’s so much you can do with it!! I Peli(can) do it! I Peli(can) finish this blog post!
Tumblr media
Okay now on to serious business, the pelican eel is rarely seen by humans but is known by looking like an eel with a pelican’s mouth! Creative naming right scientists? The fish can swallow fish much larger than himself which I find fun. He has very small eyes and can grow to about 2.5 feet in length. Their stomachs can expand to hold much larger prey.
Tumblr media
The pelican eel can eat squid and many other small invertebrates. Not much is known about the sexy stuff but we do know that during maturity the males grow bigger, um, organs you could say. Females remain relatively unchanged by puberty but will die shortly after reproduction. They can be found in all areas of the oceans, specifically the North Atlantic. No one really knows how they came to evolve but we do know that they look fun!

Kiwa hirsuta
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Subphylum: Crustacea
Class: Malacostraca
Order: Decapoda
Infraorder: Anomura
Family: Kiwaidae
Genus: Kiwa
Wow look at the turn of events. Another week, another bad blog written immediately before the due time. Whda thunk? Oh yeah! Everyone.
Tumblr media
This is the afamed “yeti crab.” Fun times. He has some weird fur covering his body so they decided to name him that. He is mostly found around the Pacific-Antarctic ridge. He is also thought to be blind, poor little man.  For food he farms his own food in his claws, which I find pretty badass personally.  I mean it’s just bacteria, but still. No information is known yet about the mating of the Yeti crab and since they are blind scientists assume that the crabs must feel their hairs to feel for a mate. We can assume that after that it is pretty similar sex to that of a regular crab. They will sort of “hug” each other and stay like that for several days? Um okay crabs that’s a little long, even for you.
Tumblr media
They will grow and develop from eggs. The Yeti crabs evolutionary origins are unknown but knowing them? That family tree is pretty wild. Okay guys I did it and am quite tired, goodnight kids, goat or otherwise.

Bobbit worms
Tumblr media
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Annelida
Class: Polychaeta
Order: Eunicida
Family: Eunicidae
Genus: Eunice
No not hobbit! Bobbit!! I hate myself and it’s 30 minutes until the due date! I just got back from the Latin Convention so my brain is fried after the 60th game of kahoot, bare with me.
Tumblr media
Eunice aphroditois is a wild dude and here’s why! He kinda looks like shrimps scary drunk uncle. He dwells on the ocean floor and is so aggressive he is known to actually SLICE HIS PREY IN HALF!
Tumblr media
He eats prey much larger than himself Not tons is known about the sexy stuff but we do know they start young. They can reach lengths of up to 10 feet, or 3 meters. Sexual reproduction begins when they are a mear 4 inches. New fossil evidence has also told us that they appeared as long ago as 400 million years ago! They evolved from a type of worm called a bristle worm. The bobbit worm can be found all over the place! They can be found in Secret bay in Bali, Indonesia - Police Pier & Nudie Retreat in Lembeh, Indonesia - and Mainit Muck or Basura in Anilao, Phillipines. So that has been your weekly addition to “sleep deprivation with Ella!” Until next time great adventurers!!!!

Flamingo tongue snail
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Mollusca
Class: Gastropoda
Family: Ovulidae
Genus: Cyphoma
Species: C. gibbosum
Cyphoma gibbosum
What an interesting name for an interesting dude. He is a species of brightly colored sea snail and is named accordingly. And, to quote our lord and savior Kesha, “Don't stop, make it pop,” and oh boy he does.
Tumblr media
He is the most common of several species in the genus Cyphoma, which lives in the tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to northern coast of Brazil, including off Bermuda, in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and off the Lesser Antilles. He is a brightly colored orange boy with black markings. His side flaps can be extracted, exposing the shell, but he only exposes himself when there is danger lurking. Um Queen same.
Tumblr media
They eat soft corals and are actually quite violent eaters. That tongue just slurps slurps millie. The flamingo tongue reproduces through internal fertilization, and the female lays her sticky eggs on the soft corals where she lives. Actually they’re quite poisonous and violent behaviorally so, in fact, they’re not cool dudes. They grow and prosper from eggs to big boys and they evolved. Juveniles tend to remain on the underside of coral branches, while adults are far more visible and mobile. They evolved from other predatory sea snails so that’s wild. Wow, so thank you on joining me on this week’s addition of “Ella Got 2 Hours of Sleep Last Night and Procrastinated on This Assignment.” See you next week!

Sawsharks! (aka Pristiophoriformes)
Tumblr media
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Chondrichthyes
Subclass: Elasmobranchii
Order: Pristiophoriformes
Family:
Pristiophoridae
Tumblr media
I am running on about 2 hours of sleep, lets see how this goes. Sawsharks are pretty wild dudes. According to Wikipedia they have dorsal fins but no anal fins, which apparently is weird. I mean personally I’d be more concerned if I had fins on my anus but that’s just me. They can reach up to 5 feet and they eat small fish, squid, and crustaceans. Hey, What's the difference between a dirty bus stop and a lobster with breast implants? One's a crusty bus station, and the other's a busty crustacean. You know I had to.
Tumblr media
They have eggs and they hatch inside the mother and they can have up to 22 pups over the course of 2 years. They don’t interact with humans at all, I mean I get them, if I didn’t have to I wouldn’t either. They are close relation to sawfish and they are the only sea dudes that have a long blade-like snout. Sawsharks are found in many areas around the world, but is most commonly found in waters from the Indian Ocean to the Southern Pacific Ocean. They are normally found at depths around 40–100 m, but can be found at much lower depths in tropical regions. So yeah, it’s 11:30 so imma go to sleep. Good night science explorers!!

Sea Pens, the best writing utensil
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Cnidaria
Class: Anthozoa
Subclass: Octocorallia
Order: Pennatulacea
Welcome to my blog! Today we’ll be learning about the sea pens( Ptilosarcus gurneyi)! The pens of the sea!! They have multiple polyps and 8 tentacles each. These polyps can blow up like balloons. They can grow up to 7 feet at most. They exhibit glide reflective symmetry, which is pretty much just flipped symmetry. Their first fossils were found in the Cambrian period and have evolved since then. The Ediacaran period is known as the “dawn of the Sea Pens”. That makes me think about them as apes climbing up sky scraper. Can you imagine if it was dawn of the planet of the pens. That reminds me! Sea pens get their interesting name because someone thought they looked like a quill pen. By that logic my parents should’ve named me like spork. I mean the resemblance is uncanny.
Tumblr media
They grow pretty typically and are pretty chill dudes.  The maintain a diet of drifting unsuspecting plankton, and they usually reside around the Gulf of Alaska to southern California on sandy or muddy bottoms, in depths from 45 feet  to 225 feet. Their sexy stuff is pretty normal but fun fact! Sea pens glow with a bright-greenish light when stimulated. That’d be wild, just saying. They are endangered because people think it’s cool to take them for decoration which is horrible cause these glowing boys deserve to live the best lives that they can. They choose a place and stay there their whole lives I mean they’re staying in their own swamp! What’s wrong with that?? Until next time scientific explorers!!

Warty frogfish
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Lophiiformes
Family: Antennariidae
Genus: Antennarius
HI wassup. Hey ella you’re the blog curator this week so here’s a blog about these little babes. The warty frogfish grows up to 15 cm (5.9 in) long which is a small boy. The skin is covered with numerous small, wart-like things. They can change colors which is fun ya know. All in all their appearance is pretty wacko but we still love and support them. They also exhibit bioluminescence. WOW
Tumblr media
They live in coral reefs and suchat about 20 m deep. They attack small animals that are out and about just livin life. They are loners and never get out of the reef to make friends. They evolved from other equally interesting species of frogfish whose stories are just as important if not more. In this blog we validate every animal. About 10 hours before the day of sexy stuff begins the female fills up with eggs then gets preggers. Wow. The egg is how he develops.

Fiddler Rays, the musicians of the sea
Tumblr media
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Chondrichthyes
Subclass: Elasmobranchii
Order: Rajiformes
Family: Rhinobatidae
Fiddler rays are the kinds of fish you’d never wanna see on a roof.
Tumblr media
BA DOM CHICK ZING
Okay sorry. So there are currently 2 species of fiddler ray, the one we will be exploring is Trygonorrhina dumerilii, or the southern Fiddler ray. They are found around the southern coast of Australia. They favor shallow sandy waters and are usually seen around depths of 180 m. They are shorter and rounder than most of the fish that are closely related to them, like the guitarfish. That’s so funny oh my god. Did they evolve from like the cellofish or something? Okay that would obviously never happen...
Tumblr media
back to business. The fiddler rays are also distinguished from other guitarfishes in that their anterior nasal flaps are expanded backwards and fused together into a nasal curtain that reaches the mouth. I don’t know about you but that seems pretty wild to me. Fiddler rays eat all types of small animals that they crush between their jaws. They reproduce using small golden eggs containing 3 embryo each. They are harmless, and easily approachable by divers and such. These dudes are pretty self explanatory and I find them very pleasing to the ear. Okay these are bad I’ll stop now. BYE!

Cichlids, the most romantic of the fishes
Kingdom Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Cichliformes
Family: Cichlidae
Cichlid it the national geographic valentines day fish, also known Cichlidae Perciformes. There are over 1,650 species of Cichlid making it one of the biggest groups of vertebrates. Cichlids are particularly well known for having evolved rapidly into a large number of closely related but morphologically diverse species within large lakes, particularly Tanganyika, Victoria, Malawi, and Edward. Cichlids span a wide range of body sizes, from species as small as 2.5 cm in length to much larger species approaching 1 m in length. They all have 1 thing in common, their lower back bones connect to their teeth. They also have a single nostril on both sides of their forehead. Little weirdos
Tumblr media
They are most diverse in africa and south america. They mostly feed on algae and plants. Now the reason you’re all here, breeding. As the national geographic valentines fish they have some wild mating habits. Most of them are polygamous, the males are also bisexual confirmed. The males also carry some eggs to help with the fertilization process. Many of the females carry the eggs in their mouths cause why not. They lay their eggs in caves and such and both sexes can raise them if they wish. They are temperate creatures and barely cause issues with others., and they obviously grow from eggs. Okay whaddup just slayed this babe.

you’re welcome

Chimaera (Hydrolagus colliei)
Tumblr media
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Chondrichthyes
Subclass: Holocephali
Order: Chimaeriformes
Chimaeras live in temperate ocean floors down to 2,600 m but are able to live at 200 m if needed. They are really cool little dudes that I personally appreciate. They have long soft bodies and bulky heads with a little slit for gills. They can grow up to 5 feet and are babies. They might not be cute but I love them. They have a poisonous fin but they’re still valid. Their skeleton is made of cartilage.
Tumblr media
For the sexy stuff the males have something called a clasper that they use to impregnate the females through sexual reproduction that is located on their foreheads. It is also retractable for even more fun. I don’t know about you but genitalia on the forehead doesn’t sound that sexy. I mean I don’t know you…
Tumblr media
The females lay leathery eggs and when they are born the females run away and leave the babies, like most of the ocean animals. They also use electroreception to hear all that hot deep sea hot gos. They appear to have appeared around 420 million years ago. Well dang, blaze it. There are around 39 similar species that have evolved from a common ancestor as the Chimaera. They also eat whatever small boy they find. All in all they’re pretty chill dudes who are similar to sharks and will poison you. Okay I lied they’re pretty agressive. But it’s fine we love them.

The Puddingwife Wrasse
Tumblr media
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Perciformes
Family: Labridae
Genus: Halichoeres
The Puddingwife Wrasse (Halichoeres radiatus)  is a fish native to the western Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to Bermuda. They are very common and can be found on reefs at depths from 2 to 55 m. Honestly they’re not that interesting but it’s fine, they’re valid.  They’re usually around 20 cm, a tiny boi.
Tumblr media
As they progress throughout their very short lives they get wider and wider and more and more aggressive. They are easily recognizable by their big lips and huge mouths that are hidden by the lips. Many of them are also able to change their sex in order to do all the sexy stuff. Scientists put two male wrasses into a tank together and soon the smaller of the fishes had transitioned to female. I personally find this freaking awesome, but that’s just me. Speaking of sexy stuff they are known for something called “group spawning,” meaning they are known for having multiple partners whilst trying to reproduce. Puddingwife more like Puddingwives. They choose their mates based on male body size.  They are carnivores and will also eat fellow wrasses. As children they are very peaceful but get more passive aggressive as adults. Kinda like my transition from child to teenager according to my mom.
Tumblr media
They have evolved from old species of wrasse and can be seen in the Eocene epoch, around 56 MYA. Okay thank you for learning about this awesome fish with me. This just goes to show don’t judge a book by it’s cover. They were much more interesting than previously thought. Until next time fellow deep sea explorers!

The Bony Eared Assfish (yes really)
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Ophidiiformes
Family: Ophidiidae
With a name like assfish you’re probably used to being the butt of jokes. See what I did there. Haha assfish. The assfish is a glorified tadpole with less class and more ass. Their bodies are “soft and flabby and their skeleton is light and reduced.”
Tumblr media
I’m literally not even kidding about this, he is described as soft and flabby. He is a small ass of only 30 cm. He also has a very slow metabolism that makes him not very active. These cold loving assfishes and have been spotted in northern oceans. They live in the deep sea and are rarely seen. Their scientific name, Acanthonus armatus, may offer clues as to why they are called the assfish. They also have the smallest brain of any sea animal.
Tumblr media
What an accomplishment Mr. Assfish. He eats any small animal that he passes on his slow journey through the sea. She has eggs floating inside her flabby body. When a baby assfish is born they are hatched from eggs and grow to the size of the adult assfish. They reproduce sexually. He has been around for a while and are the only know type of fish in this genus, his evolutionary origins are unknown. They had to create a genus for him and they chose a name that means assfish. Scientists suck. Until next week young adventurers!

Frogfish
Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Actinopterygii Order:Lophiiformes Family:Antennariidae
You know you’re something when the mayor of Indonesia calls you the “spawn of satan.” I want those kinda credentials! Little is known of my brothers and sisters but what is known is crazy! The Giant frogfish, Antennarius commersoni can be found throughout the tropical Pacific, Eastern Atlantic, Eastern Pacific, Hawaii, Indian Ocean, Japan, Red Sea, Tropical Australia, Western Atlantic, Indonesia and Asia. What a well traveled little dude!
Tumblr media
The size can range anywhere from 1/8 inch to 22 inches. They can be white or yellow with patches of color and usually camouflage very easily! Frogfish are lie and wait predators and are equipped with a lure to catch prey. They have the fastest strike speed of any animal on earth. They are cannibalistic and frequently eat their own kind. They also prey on animals of all kinds much bigger than themselves. Their sexy stuff includes a sex dance and a “vibrating movement” where the male attaches himself to the female. The male attaches the eggs to himself after this, what a great dad!! They obviously develop from eggs and after birth float away and are forced to fend for themselves, maybe not such a great dad.
Tumblr media
They are also extremely toxic which may be why they are so fearless. Frogfish have evolved from handfish a long time ago, those are some wild dudes too let me tell you. So thanks for learning some stuff with me my dudes!! See you sea explorers next week!
