I listened to the rough pieces of asphalt shift and slide under my feet, the only thin keeping me company in the lonley empty roads of the early morning. I was on my morning run, and I was taking the long route around our block.
The road hadn't been paved in ages, potholes scattered around, like a giant had plunged its foot into the ground at random. I waved at one of the passing cars, obviously heading home after a night shift. I continued on, until I reached the edge of the orchard, and the beginnings of the long line of spikey olive trees. I wiped my brow free from the sweat pouring down my face, and I continued on my jog, watching my gate get closer and closer with each step I took.
I reached the gate, and I opened it slightly, patting the head of my dog, Violet, as she came up to greet me, tail wagging, and tongue drooping outside her mouth. I walked up the short driveway, gravel crunching under my feet. I put my hands on my knees, leaning down and panting. "Holy shit, dude,." I panted out. I looked over at Violet, and a huge smile broke over my panting face. I massaged her ears, watching her smile with appreciation at me. I got up, and walked up to the door, opening it, the creak of the unoiled hinges splitting my ears. I walked in, Violet following from behind. I walked from the front room and into the hallway, turning left and into the kitchen.
I was surprised to see my mother, who usually cant eat, much less walk, cooking eggs on her stovetop. I grinned and walked up to the corner of the stove, and said "So, feeling good today, are we?" I said, watching her cook carefully, in case she fell. Violet watched her too, although with a much more silly face than I. She flicked her eyes up to my face briefly, before going back to the pan. "Yeah, I felt better this morning, decided to cook us some eggs. Better than sitting in bed being useless, ey?" She said, dumbing her steaming eggs onto the paper plate, and sticking a fork into them. She pointed to the fridge, just behind her. "Could you grab me the bottle of salsa?" She said, leaning on the counter for support. I nodded, grabbing the salsa from the fridge, and grabbing a water bottle while I was at it.
"Here ya go, mum." I said, handing her the salsa, and opening the water bottle.I watched her from the side of my eye as I chugged down the water, watching her pour out the salsa onto the two steaming piles of eggs. She handed me the salsa, gesturing for me to put it in the fridge again. I obliged, before grabbing my plate of eggs. "Thank ya, mum." I said, placing my eggs on the table. "Lemme help you back to your room." I said, placing the water bottle down on the table, and I walked with her back to her room, Violet following curiously behind me. "Lemme get the door, hold on." I said, stepping in front of her, and twisting the doorknob. I shuffled her in, and I walked back out of her room and into the hallway, walking back to my eggs.
I looked out the window, noticing a huge rolling cloud flowing towards us from the south. I opened the window to get a better look, and I caught a whiff of it. That wasnt a rain cloud, that was smoke. I quickly shut the window, and walked over to my moms room, knocking twice before being told to come in. I opened the drop door and pointed to the south. "You see that giant smoke cloud over there?" I said, watching in surprise as she nodded. "The fire department says it's from the neighboring town, they've got about six fires all in that one town. We'll be safe, we have a river going practically all the way around us." I nodded, and glanced backwards nervously. "I guess you're right." I muttered. I walked back over to the kitchen window, watching the smoke roll in, and slowly cover The Bend.
I was on one of my walks with Violet, and about to cross the bridge and onto the mainland when a car zoomed past me, crashing into an unseen force in the middle of the bridge. "Holy fucking shit!" I yelled, stopping immediately, and holding Violet back. I stood up, and jogged to the car, yelling at the driver. "Hey man, you alright?" I yelled at him, jogging towards the crash. I could hear him moaning in pain, his voice getting louder as I got closer to him, until finally he stopped, and I widened my eyes in horror. The guy was dead. How the fuck did he crash? Why didnt the mayor have the decency to build us our own hospital, not that it would've mattered. I pulled out my phone, and checked my service. No bars. "What the fuck?" I said, dialing 911 anyway.
NO SERVICE. PLEASE WAIT....
I tapped the screen in anger a few times, before another car started to drive up, slowing down when they saw the wreck behind me. I saw the guy step out of the truck, his phone in hand, until her ran into the same problem I had. No bars. He jogged up to us, and he looked me in the eye. "What happened here-" he saw the look in my eye, the pure fear, the mixture of fear, disgust, and confusion, and he looked back at the car. "Oh, I see." He said, his thick country accent covering his words. He left me and violet to our own devices, walking up to the crushed car. He instantly recoiled, clapping a hand over his mouth. He stumbled to the edge of the bridge, and he vomited over the railing. "Holy fuck" I could hear drift over from the railing. I stared down at the asphalt, plopping my butt down onto the asphalt, and I began to cry.
This is my first book, part two coming out whenever I feel like it
