I think people tend to forget that magic largely works through mundane means.
If I were to cast a financial wealth spell, the money would come through whatever channel has the best money potential: It could be a gift from a relative, a bonus paycheck, or just finding some extra cash I stashed away at some point and forgot about.
The money doesn’t just pop into existence, because doing magic doesn’t produce magical results. It produces results.

concept: there are lots of different worlds and all of them have different levels of access to magic. Some are just all over the place and some have no magic at all.
You would think that we would be one of the strictly non-magical worlds, but actually, that’s not the case—we don’t have like, a huge excess of magic, but we have, like, dreams, and the placebo effect, which puts us pretty solidly in the “Numinous” world category.

My Wednesday is gone. We don’t know how she got out or what happened, but we found her body in the neighbor’s driveway this morning. She just turned 5 two days ago. My baby is gone.

Aaaand now I’m reading Mastering Witchcraft. Free PDF here.
Do you know why so many people on this website are entitled? Books, I think.
The old books on magic and witchcraft - really most of the material written before the 1980s - it was not written in a friendly, 101 style. It was written for readers who sought out the hidden mysteries, readers who had a sense of expanded consciousness, readers who were not afraid to put in the effort to learn systems and make them work. It was not assumed that magic should seem simple or friendly or easy. No, magic was hard and weird and difficult to even comprehend.
Even books like Paul Huson’s “Mastering Witchcraft” is not overly simple, not like the stuff that would follow. I highly recommend it for beginners, but let’s be real. The introduction is a 10-page screed on gnosticism and he also encourages the reader to evoke a spirit from the Ars Goetia in, like, chapter two or something. But “Mastering Witchcraft” was pre-80s witch-boom.
Now everybody wants everything spoonfed to them. Do you want to experience deep, life-changing mysteries or do you want pretty plastic baubles?
Even if you could get the mysteries of the Universe delivered to you in shrinkwrap, why would you want to?

Both science and mysticism are tools to uncover the secrets of the universe.
Both science and magick are methods to create change in the world.
I don’t see why they should be mutually exclusive.

Great episode of the Hidden Brain podcast about the placebo effect ie. the most widely accepted example of using belief as a tool.
