In the darkness shines a light. The dim red eye of a lit cigar hangs in the air, glints off a silver cigar case, battered armor, a watchman’s badge. A man sits in the chair behind the Patrician’s desk, badge on the wood before him, silver case turning over and over in his dirty fingers.

“You ever heard of the Trousers of Time?” he asks abruptly. His voice is rough. Everything about this man is rough: his face, his clothes, his jaw. His eyes. Against the polished wood and burnished gold and fine velvet and expensive leather of the Patrician’s office, this man sits like a handful of gravel on a pedestal.

Vetinari wonders, idly, how the man saw him in the fine and expensive darkness. He sidles out from the protective hang of a tapestry. Stands at attention: it seems the done thing. And the done thing, around this man, gets done.

Fuck, man, what do you even say? I realize the simplicity of this ‘fic can easily make it seem like a cop-out, but really, that’s all that came to mind with the news. Our loss is their freedom, and vice-versa. That’s the terrible, twisted system Blaseball was all about.

This game shot from the wings onto the stage of my life during a pretty bustling time, and it absolutely, without a doubt changed it. I can say with confidence that there is and was nothing like it. It’s going to be with me whenever I think about narrative and community for the rest of my days.

And with this incredibly simple two-word ‘fic, I just wanted to make it known, that Blaseball is not forgotten (it won’t be), it’s not some minor wacky blip on the radar of life or the internet, despite its (relatively) small and size and niche, it was amazing, and unique, and it is loved, dearly, by me (and so many other people).

the thing is, i don’t hate het romance. i hate heteronormative romance.

if you genuinely think this male and female pair have chemistry or an interesting dynamic or whatever, chances are i’ll like what you write! but time and time again, i take a chance on a story with a f/m main pairing, and find that they don’t think they have to put any effort into building the romance. he’s a boy, she’s a girl, we’re done! and any hint of queerness in canon has been ignored, as if the inevitable het endgame pairing of every piece of mainstream media means nothing else could ever possibly exist.

and then, lord help me i have seen this so many times, then they go around smashing other males and females together in a quantity-over-quality way like the purpose of their fic is to increase the size of the herd via mass breeding?
