One day after training for a while, Telemachus accidentally calls Athena "mother" and as soon as he realizes he apologizes and freaks out (assuming that a virgin goddess of war and wisdom wouldn't be big on the family thing, especially considering all her family issues) and Athena calms him down and assures him that it's fine because it was just an honest mistake.

Then the moment she gets back to Olympus, Hera corners her because she is the goddess of family and suddenly she's able to notice Athena's presence in that sort of way. Athena then proceeds to break down sobbing tears of joy and fear, the first time Hera has ever seen her step-daughter in such a state, because she has no idea how to handle the fact that Telemachus at least subconsciously views her in a maternal role and she really doesn't want to mess things up because she is shockingly thrilled that he views her in such a way, something that only makes her feel more confused. Hera and Athena end up talking over tea about things and Hera gives the best advice that she can.

Next time Athena stops by, at the end of training she experimentally calls Telemachus "son", just to test the waters, but that makes him freeze up and Athena panics, thinking that she screwed up, and apologizes, mentioning the whole talking to Hera thing and tells him to just forget about it. After a pause, Telemachus asks her if she really wants him to forget about it, slowly admitting that if she meant it, he doesn't want to. They hug, they both get a little tear-y eyed they talk, and after that point they use both platonic and familial language with each other.

Then one day when Telemachus invites Penelope and Odysseus to watch him and Athena spar so they can see how much progress they've made, they both kinda forget that they have an audience and when Tele is able to trip Athena, they call each other "mother" and "my boy". And then they remember that Penelope and Odysseus are there. Penelope is able to react normally enough, both surprised and not surprised at the development. And Odysseus...

He handles it as well as one would expect considering the goddess that is now (at least in his eyes) claiming his son as her own is the same goddess that refused to call him a friend and abandoned him for ten years because he didn't listen to her as even though they have been able to be civil since Athena training Telemachus means that they have to be, he certainly wasn't expecting that the friendship his son was able to gain from the goddess he himself wanted to be allowed to even call a friend for so long went so much deeper than he ever could have imagined.
