okay so the ff7 special interest has returned n caved my skull in w a sledgehammer so intensely that i felt motivated to post on tumblr again

lemme yap about (one of) my favorite characters from ff7: doofus shinra!!!

he is wife guy

and what i mean by that is that i dont really subscribe to the suave n flirty version of rufus that i often see. to me, he is the most affectionate, loving, and supportive partner ever. he loves w his entire being. maybe it's bc im aroace n to me he is so very father figure, but ill try my best to break down my reasoning.

rufus does not flirt, especially not to people hes legitimately interested in. he does not approach someone w the intention of developing a romantic or sexual relationship with them. if it ends up happening, then sure, but itll be by accident. his partner is not someone he whispers risky or swoon worthy words to, his partner is someone he knows he can trust w his life, someone he can discuss things with. he disagrees w them sometimes, but that's what he likes. he likes that they can have a meaningful conversation, disagree, yet still respect and understand each other's reasoning. he wants an equal.

to be rufus' partner, one would have to have worked their ever loving ass off. to be able to enter his room, his life, his anything, is definitely not something to scoff at. and when someone is granted this level of trust, he is so fucking affectionate. he isnt jealous or possessive, because why would he be? his partner has proven that they deserve his trust and he trusts them in turn.

and if ur a sucker for angst (like i sometimes am) one could absolutely imagine the intense amount of devastation rufus would experience if his partner ever left him (be it by their own volition or by death).

ofc this could be so painfully inaccurate to some of u and that's chill. there's definitely a chance that my brain (in its "that's my dad fr" state) has fucked up some of the canon. but this is just for the sillies yk. i love thinking about him in private domestic situations the most so. (i also gave him a wife which is why im even writing this lol.)

side note: i like to think rufus keeps his room messy as hell. bed is not made, clothes n shit is just all over the floor. like his entire life is so organized n careful that i feel like hed find comfort in keeping his ultra personal space messy. something that is only his and is only controlled by him, something that doesn't have to be so overly considered.

regarding rebirth cid's random relationship w ifalna, i think i might have a reason as to why its a thing (if it hasn't been officially explained already)

im pretty sure squeenix thought that cid didnt have any or enough connection/beef w either shinra or sephiroth. the other party members have been wronged by either or both in some way, fueling their motives, but cid seems to not be the same

one could say that the fact that he worked for shinra and that they canceled the space program might be connection enough but i think squeenix saw it more of a cid and shera thing rather than a cid and shinra thing

i mean, im not sure how i feel about this new cid. im not big on him so far personally, but still. defiantly think that they could have done something better than "oh yea i found aerith's dead mom hot lol"

okay, so, to explain my thoughts on how i view sephi, i'll call back to the post i made right before this one

hes barely there and has barely been there for a long ass while. sure he can do basic things like brush his teeth, shower, brush his hair, but i believe he's too far gone to even give a fuck about his appearance, assuming he ever did back in the day. he's naturally beautiful enough to get away w it, but still

og seph, to me, isn't a person and hasn't been long since before nibelheim. never once in the entire game is he a person. we never get to truly hear about him from himself, only through word of mouth, legends, and from flashbacks from Mr cloud "unreliable narrator" strife. even the words of his clone that usually interacts w the party during the game cant be fully trusted to actually be how sephiroth feels bc of jenova's presence in general (no matter if you believe which one controls the other)

sephiroth is a dead man. even when he was still breathing, he was a dead man. he was a man that was beaten into a complete husk and was left as a corpse w a pulse. a corpse who would rather ignore reality than go through the painful experience of having to live inside his own mind

but thats how i see him, personally

there is a certain sense of calm i get when i block out all the ff7 stuff that came after the og game like

the way sephiroth is so majorly hyped up in every single release after the og is a bit interesting after returning to the og game for a while. bro doesn't even have the singular wing that people now mostly know him with

that also makes me think that the name of his theme is supposed to be symbolic rather than a little more literal with the wing reveal in advent children (im not sure if that was the first reveal of it but still)

"one-winged angel" without the added on literal wing on him is such an interesting train of thought to me. like it tells of someone who used to be good natured and kind (or maybe pretended to be) and then was cast out like lucifer for example. his other wing, the one that let him fly and reach heaven, was forcibly ripped out of his back or something. but then again i can never explain my thoughts well so this might read as stupid drabble and maybe not even sound like sephiroth at all

still, i value just looking at the og material for what it is, especially now with the remake series n stuff

its also funny to me that most people forget that mr angel man is literally dead for the entirety of the of game. like, he's snoozing in his crystal

he barely even says anything when you finally go fight him. says a few sentences at the start then, wham, he shuts tf up and fucking dies

og sephiroth almost seems underwhelming compared to all his other counterparts in later titles and appearances, and i find that i maybe like that a bit more

kadaj: oldest loz & yazoo: younger twins

i mostly think this from the novellas and from what i remember: kadaj was born first and then loz and yazoo materialised at the same time a bit after. i get seeing kadaj or loz being the youngest bc of how they act, but ive always seen kadaj as the oldest. i also think its a funny concept to have yazoo and loz as twins as they have completely different personalities while being bossed around by their short older brother.

i mean, theyre all like a few weeks old or smth. all small babies.

You can tell what the ship war/Tifa vs Aerith/Whose the “True” Heroine/Love of FF7 is about because it never includes Barret, despite him being a romance candidate (even IF the OG boiled it down to one big antiblack gay joke), or Yuffie (thankfully because of her age though I shutter to think how she would have been treated if she was an older, viable candidate), or Zack despite his bond with Cloud, or Jessie for that matter. All these are background elements to the ongoing fight over who is the default love interest and thus true love of Cloud.

Which is boiled down to, which one of these women are meant for this man.

It doesn't care that Final Fantasy 7 is a world-spanning story about humanity, genocide, imperialism, and trauma. It ignores that while Cloud is ultimately our main character, it's a story of an entire cast of main characters who are just as important to the ever moving plot as Cloud.

And really, as it insults Tifa and Aerith by trying to suggest one's story is more "important" than the other, it also insults Barret by completely ignoring that his efforts are the instigating factors OF the story and that the running theme of saving the planet? Is because Barret was the first one to scream it in the narrative. It ignores Yuffie's and Red XIII's fight to preserve their dying cultures in a world that actively wants to destroy them for the sake of capitalism. It ignores Cid as someone whose dreams were crushed by capitalism and become so consumed by his pain, he hurt everyone around him. It ignores how Vincent played an active role in Sephiroth's birth and the core corruption of Shinra.

And I think it absolutely misses the theme of FF7 and Cloud in general. Cloud loves everyone. He loves all his friends. If the Remakes and Rebirth did anything, it put on display that there's not one single person that Cloud loves--but all those he has met. Yes, he loves Tifa and loves Aerith and maybe in one or both, he has romantic feelings for them but he clearly loves Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, Zack, Jessie, Bigs, Wedge, Reeve/Cait, and--as we'll see later--Cid and Vincent.

If any of them died, Cloud would have been devastated. Aerith is special and he mourns her in a specific way because she's AERITH. Not because she's the ONE. SHE'S AERITH. Irreplaceable just like Tifa, just like Barret, just like Yuffie, just like Red XIII, just like Zack, and Cait/Reeve, Cid, and Vincent.

For the last near 30 years, the ship wars have rewrote Cloud's intense love for the people around him as just a heteronormative love story and it's gross.

None of the characters deserve that, but specifically Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith who are so much more than players in a stupid love triangle.
