The exhibition worked out very well . The work had two good sources of light that created double shadows of the stand. Showing lots happening in space .
Light was projected on the wall making a multi coloured layed effect on the wall. Reflections off the acetate reflected on the floor. Lots of responses from the light of the room. The an acetate showed nice colour changes. Red with blue making a deep purple which added contrast to the work . There were a lot of nice subtleties in the exhibited work.

This is a set up at home using one light source. I have the ring fairly well balanced horizontally. I have used a single string to tie it to the frame and will help it move more freely when hanging. It does not take much movement of air to make it move . This is allowing the reflections and transparency to visually change.

From exploring Alexanders Caldwells work, using mobiles to create a feel of space. I made a stand stand to hang objects on. I have lots of options in materials to choose from based on my experements. I am drawn to the subtlty of how shadow and light are expressd in his work with natural movement using balance. I enjoyed the experments using a projector. On reflection I prefer the simple more natural feel using just lights.
The stand was made using a 1.8x 3.2x 180 cm piece of wood, wire and a plastic tree stand. I had to adapt the plastic stand it was not made to take a rectangular object. I removed the center of the plastic mould by heating a small srewdriver tip on a stove. Then pushing holes in the plastic along the rectanglar line I had marked out, until the center piece could be removed. I made sure the hole was not too big or off centre.
I want to achive perfect ballance in the stand. I packed the void in the cupped part of the base with soft wood pieces. Packing them in making sure the shaft kept straight with the base. I hammered the wood pieces in adding more until it was packed tightly. I used three screws to help it stay firm.
The wire part was made using coat hanger wire. I drilled some holes through the wood to hold the wire in place. This took careful bending round the wood. The wire had natural resistance I had to learn the nature of the material, how it bent and resisted force. It tended to spring back a little. I had to exaggerate the bends and make sure I did not damage the wood.

I have unwound the single wires of chicken wire. I wound two pieces together to give the wire strength . This will allow me to bend the wires in positions I want them to hang in. The first winds of wire were uneven. I came up with a solution by making a machine that could give an even and tighter wind. I experimented with a few things I found at home using a thread bobbin, pencil joined wire and a fixing point to loop the wire. The short video above shows the basic process.

I spent time in the studio today attempting to replicate the experiments I did at home. Which were quite successful giving me a lot to work with.
I found it very difficult to replicate the expermenets I did at home because the studio is brightly lit. I had much better contol of the light at home than in the bright studio. I tried a large opaque box that is in the studio. I put the wire in and some hung acetate, then projected colour acetate into the box. I did not think it was very successful. It was to bright in the studio. Although the photographs I took do show the colour better than they did with the naked eye.

I have been thinking about the unseen force’s that are in space. I started exploring with magnets from my white board playing around with them. Watching them repel and attract each other with space between. I was experimenting polarising a piece of wire. It occurred to me that I could hang magnets on my wire form. Magnets have a force that is a real unseen force in space. The magnets stick to the wire with an invisible force and can make shadows. They are good to move around, composing shadow with them. The fact that they have an unseen force in space . Shows the meatphysical at work.

London. Press View, November 9, 2015https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5J6Qb11UHETate Modern,
I have been looking at Alexander Calders hung installations, using abstract objects, shadows light and space. These peices of artwork he calls moblies are a way he explores space. His metal forms appear to be flaoting weightlessly in space. He has used mechanical motors and manualy manouvered his wire structures in the past. Including making It a peice of performance art. Later he would make his mobliles so finely ballanced they would move buy natural movement of air. I would like my work to take on that natural movement it fits with my thinking of something unseen in space moving an objcet. It show a comnnection between the physical and metaphysical. One of the reasons Calder chose to make mobiles was he wanted to take his work off the floor, presenting his work as if floating, freeing them from physical constraints, Allowing them to exist in space.
Interaction with objects floating in space and moving shaddow is developing thinking by questioning ,why, how, and what is happening. Why is the light different at distance from the object, why is one shadow more defined then another. This leads me to ask the bigger question. How do we perceve our own physicality and boundaries and space we occupy with so much going on we do not see. These same questions can be asked when related to exploring self.

I bought chicken wire to make a structure to hang objects on. I wanted the acetate in close proxinity to the wall for a good projection, but also wanted to create a space between the wall and the acetate. I thought hanging the acetate in the wire structure would create a sence of floating in sapce. I added some sticks to the wire form. Thinking it may strengthen the structure and give more options positioning the acetate. The colour reflected off the white sticks changing their colour within the structures nicely. I painted the wire to merge visualy with the white wall, making it less noticable.
I felt not enough light was in the structure, I could posibly control and move light using a string of decorative light. It lit the sticks well but flooded the whole thing with light that cancled out some of the other light and shaddow affects. It looked over decorative and unorigonal with the string of lights.
One of the best result I had can be seen in the image with the large red triangular projection. When the light was close to the acetate and corner. It showed the affect of coloured light interacting with more space. I tried to replicate it in college but the location and light did not get the same results. i had less control of light in the studio.

Similar to the previous experiment with holes in a can with light. Some good results which could be used in a projection came from looking down the centre hole of the chicken wire roll. The disadvantage to this is to film it. My camera has to cover the hole in the middle if the wire roll. It is dificult to know what is being captured by the lense .These images a screen shots and moving image taken while moving the light produced the best affect. I would have to make lots of videos to be edited cropped and pasted to make a decent length of film. Editing colour in the film is an option to consider . Although I am more drawn to natural movement in my work rather than introducing a moving film now. The natural movement in Alexander Calders mobile feels more in tune with the natural processes in sapce.

I wanted to explore the asestate further by changing its form. To learn more about its visual properties. I began by hanging the acetate forms to a wall. Moving the light around I can change the shape of the shadow to make a nice composition. Although having the work directly on the wall seems quite restricctive as I am exploring space. i decided to hang the work on a pole across the corner with lights to create the shadow, this gave a flaoting feel to the experement that can be relate to my concept.

I used cut acetate shapes with curved line to give a more flowing shape to add movement. I found the colours layered well creating darker momo chromatic tones in the blue. I was also able to create purple and green. The colours on the hanging plastic forms really lit up well from the projector with the room light off. Lots of space between the wall the objects in this experement. The holes in the plastic allow space to be seen through them. the opacity and soft defusion of clours lends a weightless feel to them as if floating in sapce. The shaddows on the wall made some good paterns. I moved them around to make a nice composition with the line of the acetate projection on the wall. The projector was sitting a little higher on the wall than i expected. But this made realise that i could project into angles and have the projected image change direction in space. i have found lots of interesting ways that light and shaddow can be manipulated.

I was looking for a material with opacity I could mould into forms to reflect coloured light on. Using plastic milk cartons I cut flowing curved shape with holes using complimentary line. The plastic cuts well much better than paper which I tried in early experiment. I held the plastic infornt of the projector. The shaddow stood out boldy on the wall the coloured light worked well on the plastic. The opacity gave a soft reflection of light on its surface.

I bent the holed paper into a from that represents the human body. The holes and sapce feel like the permeable way that we interact with space. The form cast some very nice shaddows both soft and sharp. Its volume and flowing shape give it a floating feel. I added the orange paper gives it energy .

I cut a stencil in paper with flowing complimentary shapes. I wanted to create randomness in a pattern that had an element entropy. Where disorder in the pattern would create a ballanced composition. I put the stencil over acetate on a projector it had a good visual affect, seperating the colours into their own space and providing contrast. While working with the projection I realised i could use it to make 3D image with two surface to projected on.

The divergence from my work in Creative enquiry will be in a studio practice-based divergence in my making. In my Creative enquiry project, I intend to work in plaster making a 3d form. My divergent practice from this will be in light and space with transparent materials to create a projection piece of work in an abstract form. It is integral to my work that I use abstract theory in aiming to remove narrative this will allow the viewer to think freely about the meaning of self.
I intend to use colour acetate and either hand drawn work or using objects in my projection piece. Through my research so far, I have discovered several artists who work In this area of making and thinking I can use as reference.
i have looked athe the artists below whio connect with exploring the self space and our physicality and its interaction with the external elements of existance .
Brief description of some of the works i will base my research on
Robert Irwin” Sculpture 2018
His work explores the interaction between light and space in his glass columns
Hellen Pashgian “Untitled 2020”Configurations Pace Gallery
She explores the parameters between the physical and the external .As he yellow disc dissipates into a soft edge of nothingness

James Turrell “Dhatu” 2010 Yayoi Kusama 2020-2021 Museum of Art’s. Installatition “Fireflies on the Water” Toledo
This explores the connection
with light with a plinth there is no
physical contact between the light
and plinth as it apears to hang in
space representing the spereation
of self and the external .

This experement was made using a food container cylinder with holes pierced around the bottom edge. I wanted to see how light reflected insiide would behave. The light made some nice reflections that kind of make me think of the images I often seen in astronemy books and videos. A view into sapce image kind of look. I digitaly edited the image to black and white tone and softened the image slightly by adjusting contrast. It was only when moving a torch around outside the container that I noticed the moving image I could create in the vidoe above. I edited the video using colour filters. This could posibly be used as part of my work to create movement in a projection .

For this experment I was thinking of Robert Irwin using panels of perspex with colour and depth in his layers. I cut rectangles of acetate, considering line and colour palacement. The changing tone and colour of overlapping acetate is an area i will explore further. I had the primary colours to work with only. By overlapping the colours I can create more colours like purple and green.
I cut the acetate into shapes with curves to move away from the geometric image. This looked good as a projection giving some flow to the image. It was also an atempt to use abstraction in my work removing any narative.

This experement came from thinking on Hellen Pashgain’s Yellow Disc. Using a clear plastic lid, acetate and paper against a light. The objects merged visualy. It has a soft transition of light which merges with the background. Similar to Hellen Pshgain's work which uses the dilution of an image into its backgroung to interperate the metaphysical. The orange image is one I digitaly edited with colour filters experementing with another media out of curiosity. This is something I may consider exploring further.

In this experements I have used acetate peices and introduced a light to project an image on the wall. This show the seperation of light and physical objects, presence of space invisabaly alows light to travle through it to projected on a wall. The concetivity through space using light is a visual method that I can use to show something is happening in space we cant see. It demonstrates that sapce is not empty.
From a creative viewpoint this has been useful making the froms and experementing with ligth, observing how light behaves. i found Iight can be used to stretch shaddows, changing the shape of whats seen. Composing objects and placement of light will be a useful tool to understand when making my work. It took considered placement of the acetate and direction of light to achive this affect. I find the acetate is a good material to bend into forms to experement with.
