As we start getting closer to the color wheel expansion release I’ve started thinking about just what might go wrong. I guess this is a list of the things to be expecting on June 8th. It’s sort of a hope for the best but expect the worst sort of thing.

1. Extended Rollover. This is a definite, seeing as downtime was extended before NotN and any new venue release because the admins need time to load up the new code. The same will likely be true for this, considering that it’s a huge update.

2. Lag. Another definite. There are going to be so many players online all trying to do things to get dragons with new colors. The image generators are going to be the biggest sources of this, and are probably going to be the laggiest. This will effect hatching nests, unhatched eggs, and the scrying workshop the most, though it’ll definitely affect other places too.

3. Server-side dropped connections / Short periods of unexpected downtime. Another definite. The strain on the server will be pretty bad, especially at peak times, so I don’t doubt that the server will just nope out at times. Hopefully not too often or for too long, and hopefully it shouldn’t cause any permanent problems.

4. Broken images. Possible. It’s possible that the image generator might not work right at first, even if the dragon generator does, especially since it’s going to be under high stress on the release day. Dragon images might look weird or broken at first, and may need to be refreshed once the image generator is under less stress.

5. New colors not being implemented properly. Unlikely, but still possible. It’s possible that when the site opens back up after rollover, things might not work right at first. If something does go wrong, the most likely problem is that the dragon generator is only picking from the old colors, but this isn’t the only possibility. What I’m saying is, if you’ve stocked up on unhatched eggs or have a bunch of nests you’ve planned to hatch, maybe only hatch a few and not all of them, and keep an eye on the forums / tumblr tag to see if everything is working right.

6. Extended downtime. If something goes wrong this is a definite. If it turns out there is some big problem with the new dragon generator the admins will definitely put the site into maintenance while they try to figure out what went wrong.

7. Rollback. If something goes wrong this is possible. A lot of people are hoarding unhatched eggs and are waiting to hatch nests until the color wheel is expanded, and if it turns out that the dragon generator is broken then the people who hatched all their things will be absolutely livid. If this happens the admins might decide to roll things back to minimize the backlash.

8. Release date is pushed back. Possible, and if something goes wrong this is vey probable. Maybe the art templates still need to be finished, and the team needs to push back the release in order to finish them. Or another scenario: If it turns out the dragon generator has major issues, the admins might just decide to put the old one back for the time being while they fix up the new one, and re-release it once it’s been fixed up.
