why you (don't) want a jay marshmarrows, pt 2:
you made a slideshow months ago telling people that they didn't want you as a teammate. really, it was because you were scared. because you don't know if you're good enough. because you've never known how to be honest. you didn't want to hurt anyone again. why not push them away before the season even starts?
reason 1: they're reckless
you fall into a cave within the first five minutes of the server and die. maybe you should slow down but you're not used to that. for a moment, you forgot that death has real consequences again. you forgot that it's not supposed to be your goal.
reason 2: they're useless
you forget food before going into the cave and run out of wood down there as well. if not for the mineshaft, you'd probably have died again. "i have a gift!" you tell your friends, but it's not a very good one, not like the food and resources they've given you. a spyglass doesn't matter much, after all.
reason 3: they're scatterbrained
you forget your goals again and again. there's so much to do, so many places to go, that you can feel your thoughts split between every possibility. go to the cave for iron? the nether maybe? oh, but there's a trial chamber too isn't there? what is it you wanted? you hope mari isn't getting sick of you.
reason 4: they don't learn from their mistakes
your pickaxe breaks digging down and you've run out of wood. again. you think you left your crafting table in the village but you're really not sure. mari follows you down with a crafting table but he doesn't have wood either. that's okay though, he's done more than enough to help you already. you're just glad he's stuck around. they go back up for wood and die in the process and maybe this wouldn't have happened if you'd just remembered wood in the first place. you realize later in the trial chamber that you've forgotten food again as well.
reason 5: they try and they try and they try but-
you've had success in the nether for a moment. you've returned home with resources and everything seems to be going so well. but then you go back in and you don't come back and mari returns to try to help you and you're
so close
but nothing can ever go your way, can it.
reason 6: they can't keep going forever
everything is gone before your eyes and maybe you'd be able to laugh it off if it was just your stuff, but it was mari's too and you can't keep dragging your friends down with you.
reason 7: maybe they're just not enough
maybe you'll never be enough. you can't offer anything that can't be done better by everyone else.
why you (do) want a jay marshmarrows:
reason 1: they're still here
maybe none of that matters. despite everything, you want to stick around. despite everything, you think they want you to stick around too.

what is a star?
Tumblr media
The story behind the stars?
I saw the stars in the sky when I got out of Death. And looking at that bright shine I felt only one thing - hunger.
But I saw this desired sparkle in others - in the place of each heart a shimmering, alluring star.
And when the sky is devoid of stars, I hope that the sparkle in the hearts of others will fade along with it.

The Spawn Beautification Project
Tumblr media
Visitors to spawn today were delighted to see the area had been filled with sweet berries.
Along with their charming looks and deeply satisfying place and harvest sounds, sweet berries are known to all players of Decked Out 2 as "technically a food I guess".
Now when players are killed with an obstructed spawn point they will be able to enjoy a delicious snack.

[dismp] what are your thoughts on lying? on being lied to?
The story of Roshambogames and Mapicc in Lifesteal season four goes something like this:
Mapicc and Roshambogames, overlooked and disregarded, take opportunity after opportunity to make the server look at them, bow to their whim, and weep. There is a desperate struggle for power, a glorious, addictive high, and there is the brutal fall from grace that follows. They are yin and yang, the perfect picture of duality.
Enter Ro, the idealist. Enter Mapicc, the one tasked with putting him in his place.
In every partnership there is a line that must never be crossed.
Ro’s idealism clouds his vision until he can see no other way to create his blessed utopia than by banishing every player, every sinful, unpredictable player, to the End. Mapicc, in turn, works with Spoke, fakes his banning, and returns to trap Ro in an apocalypse of his own design. His world ends at the hand of his best friend.
Roshambogames, dying in a cave with his best friend’s blade going through him, says, “If there was anyone’s hands I’d wanna die at, it’s Mapicc’s.”
Katamari thinks, if Void is their teammate cursed to be tasked with keeping them in their place, they cannot allow themselves to meet the same fate as the idealist.
+
The indescribable middle ground between care and bloodlust looks a little like this:
One day, Katamari is being brave and following Void into the End despite knowing that he’s recently been meeting with the enemy; the next, they’re thinking of the easiest way to cut ties with their team. Katamari giggles and blushes and plays the role of the damsel in distress trapped within their loving teammate’s paradise, because that’s what’s expected of them, and Void takes their elytra and has complete and total freedom for a week. Their oldest teammate looks a lot like their enemy, given the amount of time and energy he gives those who work against them, who have hurt them time and time again. They willingly hand over their elytra nonetheless.
Sometimes, they make Void mad. They speak of something they shouldn’t know of, they voice their doubts regarding his loyalty, they call him out on his act of devotion. Sometimes, they run off with Cogmented and dream of never returning. Sometimes, they meet with someone hiding in a tree, nearly choking on the oppressive peace around them, and entertain the thought of dropping their responsibilities and playing untouchable and good until the season ends.
Sometimes, Void makes them mad. He disappears for hours on end, meets with the enemy and gives them gear and hearts and support. Katamari tells him to leave while he still can and to never come back. They can’t stand liars. They can’t stand being lied to. They dream of the day a lie told to them can be punishable by death.
They spar with Void rarely. Even with extra hearts, they can’t beat him. At a castle hidden within the desolate void of the End, it’s Katamari’s sixteen hearts against Void’s most likely less than fifteen, given his penchant for donating to the enemy, and they still lose.
That’s the thing, really. Katamari never wins, not the fights they start, nor the fights Void loses.
They’re not one to give up easily.
They’re running out of patience.
+
The distinct sound of something breaking echoes throughout Heaven’s Vault. Recently, it’s been so quiet that Void is sure if anyone were to be residing within the walls of their home, he’d be able to hear them breathe. There’s a quick, hushed curse that follows, but he knows the base well enough to pinpoint the location; the centerpiece of Heaven’s Vault, where a wheat field grows under a false perpetual night sky. It’s where Katamari goes to relax, to feel closer to something, no, someone more familiar.
Void’s never met the man it’s dedicated to. Sometimes, Katamari speaks of things he’s certain he shouldn’t be hearing about, old business ventures and exploits resulting in a manufactured ascension to godhood; it makes his head hurt and his memory hazy every time without fail. He imagines, no matter the incomprehensible background, that there’s something sacred about the place. Something he can’t comprehend, but important nonetheless.
Void spots Katamari standing in the center of the field the second he begins to ascend the stairs to it. Heaven’s Vault is dimly lit, and Katamari is so pale that they blend into the tree growing in the middle of the field, but eventually he finds them beneath it, standing at the blanket laid under the cover of its leaves. They look haunted, hands curled into tense fists at their sides, hair falling past their bandana and into their face. Void follows their dark gaze to the ground and stops halfway up the final step, frozen in place.
Glass gleams from where it’s scattered across the ground, a black strap being the only thing holding the mess of plastic and circuitry and ruined technology together. At their feet lies the goggles of Katamari’s communicator’s extended interface, shattered. It’s as good as a death sentence.
“Mari,” he says, though bile rises to his throat when his teammate winces at his voice. They’re not oblivious. He’s testing the limit-tester’s limits. He’s encouraged the conflict that’s led to this moment. “Mari.”
“Void,” Katamari laughs, not looking up at him. They sound so tired, so ruined. “I didn’t realize you’d be here tonight. Sorry.”
“I… It’s fine,” Void says, but he can’t tear his eyes away from that interface, the broken metal and plastic gleaming in the artificial light of Heaven’s Vault. Katamari did that to their interface. Fuck. He can’t stop them. They’re never going to be satisfied. Sooner or later, they’re going to realize that they can leave. “You should do what you want. I don’t care what it is. I’ll follow you.”
Katamari kicks at the dirt beneath them, burying shards of glass amongst the wheat. “You know I don’t have a say in that matter anymore; we work for Pantheon and have an impossible deadline to meet. I don’t have the privilege to freely do whatever I want,” they say. “You don’t have to follow me anywhere. I don’t want you to. I just want you to stop lying to me.”
They’re not telling the whole truth either. He sees the way they giggle and exchange glances with Cog, the way they tell Arch nearly everything and stand at his side to protect him. Katamari’s more comfortable with someone who was once the enemy than they are with their day one team.
“I won’t. I just forget sometimes, I’m not doing it on purpose, Mari. I don’t want to. I want to be with you, and you should be able to do what makes you happy, even if that’s…” Ending the world with Cogmented. Void doesn’t want to say it, to admit that he knows what his teammate has been less than subtly daydreaming about. To admit he’s lost them to an impossible ideal. “What happened with—”
“It wouldn’t work right,” Katamari says, forcefully calm. Finally, they look up from the dirt. They look worse than Void ever remembers them looking, lifeless dark eyes and cracked porcelain peeking out from beneath their clothes. Even in the roughest moments of their early days, they’d at least looked alive. Katamari looks like a dead man walking. They look like a broken doll. “It wouldn't do what I needed it to do.”
Void’s spent months with Katamari, though it feels like more than physically possible. Time dilates and warps around them. He guesses it’s just their effect on the world, like a wither’s boss bar or an elder guardian’s mining fatigue. Katamari makes things confusing. They know too much and say too little. Every interaction feels like a sick test.
He knows just how frustrated they can get when things don’t go their way fast enough. He remembers the lonely first week of the season. He remembers helping them recover from every lost fight. He’s familiar with how they seethe with rage, polite and quiet until they can no longer stomach it.
Arch recently pulled him aside to tell him that Pathogen as a whole had just dodged a major bullet. A major, Katamari-shaped bullet.
“Don’t tell Void,” they tell Arch, late one night, before dragging the rest of tf2 trio into their mess and blowing up Nara’s week of hard work. “But I’ve been thinking of blowing up Heaven’s Vault for a while now.”
“I have the supplies, and who is more deserving of blowing it up than me? Something has to change.”
Katamari, naturally, hadn’t spoken a word to him about it.
If a farm isn’t built right, it’s a problem with the tutorial. If they can’t land a hit, the blade is faulty. If they're being targeted, it’s because of him. Katamari can’t handle when things don’t go their way.
“You loved those goggles,” Void sighs. Katamari had discovered a way to x-ray beyond the limits of the guiding rules of their world, poking and prodding and pulling at settings until something had irreversibly broken and granted them a gift like no other. The thing held every schematic and blueprint they had ever drafted, things too grand, too expensive to ever see the light of day. It documented every recording, every book or message of kind words, every photo. “You said…”
That interface was Katamari’s pride and joy, their key to success, and now it’s reduced to a mess of shattered glass and ruined technology.
Katamari rolls their eyes. “Well, sometimes love’s not enough.”
