The Legends:

Pandit Ravi Shankar

He was among the first musicians to modernize Indian classical music. His disciples included sitarist Alla Rakha (1919-1996) and sarod player Ali Akbar Khan (1920-1991). For his work as a composer and performer, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. He founded the Kinnara School of Music in Bombay (now Mumbai). It was here that I was introduced to Indian classical music. He had 5 daughters named Shubha, Lakshmi, Aparna, Anoushka, and Sukanya.

He performed with Ravi Shankar for over 40 years.

Shri Zakir Hussain

The sacred verses sung by Lord Shiva in praise of Adi Shakti gave birth to a great art form called classical music. Now, it is the turn of our featured artist to represent the next generation of great Indian Classical Musicians. As we celebrate the arts and artists in India, let us introduce to you a legend who is changing the face of Indian Classical Music. He is no other than Shri Zakir Hussain.

Shri Zakir Hussain has been performing music for more than six decades, and he is still going strong. He is still touring the world, playing and teaching music. He has been a part of the famous Indian Film Industry as well as appearing in movies such as 'Qurbani,' 'Omkara,' 'Agni Parv' and many others.

His determination and attitude have won him many laurels over the years. In 2008, he was awarded Padma Vibhushan by President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam for his exemplary contribution to Indian Classical Music and Culture.
