How to Throw an American Idol Party
American Idol is one of the most popular shows in America today, so throwing an American Idol party is a great idea. Only thing is, where do you start? You can go as all out as you want with this theme or keep it more casual, it's entirely up to you. Hiring a projector would be a wonderful way to decorate and add an "oohh" factor to your party. If you can hire a couple of projectors it would be great. Use the barest part of your walls take down any art or wall hangings. The walls can be covered in projections of the American Idol logo. Hooking up a webcam or video camera to the projectors would also be a great idea. Later, during performances, the projectors will be showing images of the performer on all the screens.
One of the walls can be draped in black material, this will be the "stage" area and dancing area. Cover the black back drop in white and silver stars while the ceiling is entirely draped with silver, white, blue and green streamers. Hang stars from some of the streamers. Another fun idea is to have a couple of spotlights rigged from either the ceiling or floor so that the "idols" can be spotlighted. If a spotlight will be too difficult, you can get inexpensive "disco light balls" from places like Target, which can just be placed on the ground in front of the stage or behind the performer.
If you have a Playstation console, Wii, or Xbox, then there are a variety of great products that you can buy in lieu of hiring a karaoke machine. Check out the American Idol Bundle for the Wii or Playstation. There are even microphone accessories you can purchase! The great thing about using one of these types of games is that the game is all set up for you. There are try outs, competitions and even the judges from the show!
Your other option is to hire a karaoke machine. Make sure you get a variety of fun, get-up-and-move type of songs, which will get the other party-goers up and dancing. You can also buy or download an American Idol CD to truly keep in theme with your party! Don't forget to download the American Idol theme/intro music so it can be played as each performer is announced and coming up to the stage. Take turns letting party guests announce performers or take on Ryan Seacrest's role yourself. Have fun and be as cheesy and over the top as you can!
Remember to video-tape the performances and interview the contestants afterwards. You can compile them into an "episode" at a later date and send them to each of the guests!
Food should be very "LA". Chocolate covered strawberries, bellinis, truffles. Finger food is easiest and fun. It will give the night more of an "awards show" feel. Anyway - no one in Hollywood eats! Don't think that you cant feed your guests properly with only finger food though. There are many filing, satisfying choices you can make. Try serving stuffed mushrooms, sushi,  amp; mock caviar. These microphone cupcakes will garner some laughs and are super easy to make!
There are many American Idol accessories out now and you can really complement your theme by purchasing some of them. American Idol plates, cups, and napkins are often sold in party packs. As well as fitting your theme, it will make cleanup a cinch.
Above all, this is meant to be a party, so the vibe should be relaxed, casual, and fun. Encourage people to have fun with their performances, go a little crazy, and not to take themselves too seriously. Group numbers will be a hit and off key singing, ad-libbing, and obvious lip synching should be applauded!
