Leonidas Giannakopoulos

He was born in Chania, Crete in 1983.  He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Athens in 2011, from the 3rd painting studio of Ms Rena Papaspyrou and 1st printmaking studio of Mr Michael Arfaras and Mr John Gourzis.

Leonidas has created posters for the music groups Mode Plagal and Paul Pavlidis. Also he has been working as assistant stage designer and set painter. He has been assistant of the artist Nikos Alexiou for the Greek Pavilion of Venice Biennale in 2007.

He lives and works in Athens.

As noted by Alexios Papazacharias, the specific series emerged from the intention of Katerina Zafeiropoulou to use transparency and transparent glass as material and surface which instead of separating the interior from the exterior, leads to an artistic composition.

Taking advantage of the natural transmission of light to the eye these works allow us to perceive the surrounding space and the artistic field as a conjunction of the viewer’s position and that of the artist at work.

The objects of her painting range from objects designed as emblems of aesthetic and economic value to things, inventions and conditions that over the last two centuries have changed our entire social interaction and life. What happens if all these objects are what actually stands before us and determines precisely what we see and what we don’t see?

Her new works with the photographic background resemble windows which the consecutive layers of glass and the outlines are what is surrounded, what inhabits the space like dozens transparent buildings that obstruct the view of the sea. Her new paintings function as black and white designs on a colorful surface, as colorful as reality itself.

The new sculptures which Katerina Zafeiropoulou is presenting for the first time consist of all these things at their actual scale, in single-color compositions and which escape from the careful design from one level to the other.

Everything that surrounds us in the places we live in look as if they are self-organized and claim the position of the inhabitant or room-mate. And in contrast with the transparent glass and the clear outlines, which allow us to understand everything, the grey single-colored sculptures hide from our sight their whole structure, their organization and their origin.
