Desktop Gadget
The desktop gadget that I chose to make is an elegant paper organizer. As you can see, it has five levels of which you can place any type of paper and other important materials to keep it safe and neat in one place. The upper portion of the organizer is divided in two parts. The back part is where you can place other materials such as your scissors, papers, notes, and such. The front part consists of a pencil holder and some space to place your paper clips and other necessities needed on the desk. This paper organizer is no ordinary one as you can see on the right side of it, there is a telephone device connected so that one can take a phone call with someone via their desktops.

1.) The artwork I painted is the Philippine flag and inside it depicts certain Filipino scenarios that show our culture and heritage. As you can see below, I painted a combination of a beautiful scenario of a beach, two Filipinos helping one another to harvest fruits, a Filipino lifting her hand up high for the "Panatang makabayan", and the whole of the Philippine flag which consists of the yellow starts, blues, whites, and reds.

2.) At first, I didn't really know what I was doing. I was really glad that I drew what I wanted to paint the day before the actual painting but turns out, it was actually harder to paint it than draw. The first day of painting was stressful since we had to share the paint and combine it to make specific colors for our artwork. There was also insufficient time provided and some of us actually made their paintings at home. Fortunately, I was able to finish my painting in school since sir Pags gave us paint yay. It would've been better though if each of us were provided our own set of paint so that we would be able to work faster.
3.) The supposed "big idea" that I wanted to convey through my work is that we Filipinos are people who strive to help one another and we use our present resources to be able to come with up with innovative ideas that will boost our economy up. The country we Filipinos live in is a place where trees flourish, heavenly bodies mesmerize, and people with great personalities surprise. One can depict the Philippines as a beautiful solemn place that is happy to welcome and accept people from other races. The Filipinos as we all know are hospitable and they value and respect the heritage and history of their very own "bayan."
4.) As for my painting, I personally think that it came out better than expected since I didn't really think I would be able to paint the drawing I made. The drawing I made was intricate and so, it was hard to paint the little details. I am really glad on how it turned out and i'm proud to call it mine.
5.) The artwork is consistent with the definition of contemporary art since it show me being able to reflect not only my perspective on how I see the Filipino heritage but moreover, reflect with what the current society of the Philippines is. The art I was able to produce was able to show some part of what the Philippines. Since I am a Filipino, I am able to show how beautiful our country and our citizens are and I am proud to say that i'm a Filipino.

In our previous lesson in contemporary arts, the works of Fernando Amorsolo were shown. Personally, I agree to Leo Benesa’s claim about Amorsolo’s work that they are the most expressive of the ethos of the (Filipino) race since and predominantly agricultural country side. If one would take a look of all his works such as the ones seen below:

It can be seen that Amorsolo is very fond of making artworks of Philippines genres, specifically the Filipino society and its history. Amorsolo was a famous portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. During the early times, Filipinos are depicted as people who are masters in the agricultural field. They are hardworking and persevere in helping one another towards having a fruitful life. Due to this perception, Amorsolo was able to come up with ideas of portraying the Philippine society. However, he was not actually able to portray the whole of the Filipino race since he was only able to show the agricultural side found in the provinces. Moreover the current society as of today is going through advancements, using enhanced technology and following the footsteps of other countries whom are progressing. But still, Amorsolo’s wok is timeless and up to this day, his agricultural sight of the Filipino society is known by most people.
In response to the second question, I think that the use of the English in literature may lessen the “Filipino-ness” of the literary work since the language of a country is connected to the way a Filipino literary work is made. The English language as of today is taking over the way Filipinos talk to one another and more so, use this language in almost all subjects for writing, speaking, and the like. By doing so, the essence of using the country’s very own language is not being expressed ideally and because of that, the Filipinos are not even able to use their language properly. Colonial mentality continues to prevail in the Philippines as of today and the use of a foreign language is present. However, there are still times when Filipinos are able to express a Filipino perspective in an English language since these people are more accustomed at using this language. The Filipino essence is still there, but it would’ve been better if they were able to use the country’s language to further express the Filipino-ness of the work efficiently.

Blog Entry #2: Gallery Visit

We visited the Museum of Women’s Art in college last September 28, 2017.The gallery is an old typical college building. The artworks displayed are affected by the place itself since the building is composed of a high ceiling which shows a more elegant way of showing each work and also widens the atmosphere. It has no pillars but there are two simple doorways to show the simplicity of the art place. It also has this divider which I think separates the artworks and organizes them in a way that the visitors would understand and appreciate. The wall color of the are matters since it enhances the colors of the artworks and makes it more pleasing to the eye, showing the vivid colors of the works more.

The space used in the exhibition is quite small and since there were a lot of us who visited, it was very crowded and so I did not feel that comfortable. Also, the space was very minimal that there were artworks displayed on the floor and some even had no authors to represent them. This affected the exhibition since it shows that the college area is not capable of accommodating much art in their area. The atmosphere it created was making people feel claustrophobic somehow. Looking at the lighting, I didn't notice any change in the light levels, maybe because I was at the last part of the line going there. I can say that use of the lighting was effective since its low lighting keeps the artifacts and works in good condition and protects them as well. It also adds to the exhibition since the lighting further expounds on the beauty of each artwork since it enhances its features by making the artworks more pleasing to the eye.

There are about 38 artworks in the gallery composed of sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings and I think most of them exhibits the portrayal of women.
Five of the artists that I remembered were featured in the gallery are:
Julie Lluch created Hubad (Nude), a sculpture that portrayed a naked woman

Jade Navarro Bengco created the Tangapangalaga ng Kapuluan (Guardian of the Islands) using watercolor on paper

Anita Magsaysay-Ho created Mga Tindera ng Mani (Peanut Vendors) which is print edition

Milagros Delgado Enage created the Azotea using watercolor that shows a woman carry a basket of fruits on top of a platform of a house or azotea

Maria Thibaya Mendoza created Alimpuyo (the Cycle), a free-hanging sculpture made out of clay.

Out of all the artworks stated above, I really liked the work of Jade Navarro Bengco of her Tagapangalaga ng Kapuluan. The painting was very detailed even if she used watercolor and I personally think that it’s a painting technique that’s hard to manipulate. The artwork was very vivid and it portrayed a beautiful woman representing the Philippines. The color combination used were nice in a way especially since it represented our country. I also appreciated the intricacy of the painting and how the artist put a lot of effort in making every part of the work match with one another. Moreover, I really admire how she was able to make certain designs such as flowers and the waves of the sea on the lower portion of the woman’s dress she painted. The mood of the painting was tranquil and it was calming to look at since it somehow empowers Filipino beauty.
In contrast with the artworks above, among all the artworks present in the exhibit, I can say that I liked the set wherein there were minimal colors present in each drawing made as seen below since each artwork depicted something deep but I couldn't exactly point out what it is. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take note of the names of the authors who made these magnificent works.

The other features that I suggest to be present in the gallery is that there should’ve been more dividers separating the artworks from the visitors for sustaining the artwork itself and protecting it from any damage. However, since the place is small, this could not be done. It would’ve been better if the room was larger, maybe they could look for another are where the artworks could be places and preserved more delicately. Overall, I enjoyed visiting the gallery with my classmates since we were able to give appreciation the outstanding artworks of different Filipinos. I look forward to visiting more Art Galleries to be exposed to various artworks.

My academic goal for this term is to have at least an A- in most of the subjects including contemporary arts so that I would be able to make my parents proud. In order to achieve this goal, I would work extra hard and be patient with myself especially when it comes to art so that the works I will create would be outstanding. I think, this subject will help me in achieving my goals by letting me release my stress over the other subjects and relax since doing art calms the mind. My expectations for contemporary arts is that there will be a lot of practice exercises in order for us to be able to hone our art skills. It may be a bit difficult since not all of us are good in drawing/painting but we’ll give it a shot. The most useful thing in this subject is about learning art concepts so that we would give more appreciation to art itself. The most challenging part in this subject is that we will make our own paintings/drawings ourselves which is difficult for some of us. However, we will address this challenge by keeping on trying and giving all our effort to make the most out of our every piece of work.
