A Brief History of Construction

From a bunch of stones forged together to the skyscrapers & underground architectures, the construction industry has seen multiple ups & downs and revolutions more frequently than any other industry.
Humankind evolved from living in temporary shelters resistant to slight climate change to successfully building earthquake-resistant infrastructures and missile-proof buildings. In this article, we will learn how the revolutions changed the construction industry periodically. We will also discuss how the discovery of materials such as steel and creative inventions like wheels changed the shape of construction entirely. So without further ado, let's get started.
Ancient Egypt
The ancient Egyptian era refers to the timeline from 3000 BC to 500 AD. Unlike the traditional construction techniques, people started building more sustainable homes than ordinary ones. Materials such as bricks, stones, mud, and snow were used for construction purposes. Ropes and rollers were the only construction equipment available at that time and the construction industry was very much dependent on manpower.
Notable Architecture
Pyramid of Giza – even modern-day scientists and construction engineers are unable to figure out how ordinary people, aged back to 3000 BC made such a marvelous piece of art. Leave alone the modern equipment and machinery, even tires were not invented at that time.
Ancient Rome
The Roman era was remarkable for the progress of the construction industry. Hydraulic lime, famously known as Roman cement replaced the mud and made buildings and architectures more sustainable. Bronze and lead were used for roofing purposes. Glass; both colored and clear were introduced for decoration purposes and received admiration from everyone who mattered.
Slavery played a very important role in the progress of Rome. Thousands of slaves used to work tirelessly day and night against their will, even large-scale construction projects didn't take more than 2 years to complete.
Marvelous Architecture
The Colosseum and Pantheon are two of the world's most remarkable architectures ever built. The Colosseum has been destroyed several times but thanks to the magical Roman concrete that it is still standing which is no less than a miracle.
The Colosseum was built in 70-72 AD on Emperor Vespasian's orders; it was inaugurated by his son Titus after the death of his father.
19thCentury
The 19th century is where things changed drastically. The first industrial revolution began in the 1830s in the United Kingdom which was then known as Britain and spread like wildfire all across the world. The production of steel, metal, and glass on large scale changed the whole construction industry. Railways and Canals were built to transport the construction material from one place to another. Nail cutting glass became common, steam engines were invented. Explosives became common for demolition purposes.
Remarkable Buildings
The steam engines revolutionized the 19th century's construction practices. London's Palace of Westminster is the most remarkable architecture which was constructed right after the revolution started. Since the revolution started in Britain, most of the exceptional architecture of the 20th century is from London such as London Paddington Station, Buckingham Palace, The Oval, etc.
20th Century
In the 20th century, another industrial revolution started in the mid-1930s with mechanization. Cranes and elevators capable of lifting tons of weight at an immense height were introduced which resulted in skyscraper buildings like Burj al Arab.
Technology started evolving rapidly, minimizing the need for labor which resulted in the formation of Labor unions and societies for the first time. Megaprojects started more frequently.
Notable Achievements
As the technology was at its peak, there are more than thousands of buildings which can claim the spot of top 10 most innovative buildings of 20th century. However, I think that the Sydney Opera House, BT Tower, World Trade Center, The Atomium, and Burj al Arab are some of the most innovative and astonishing architectures of the 20th century.
Endnote
In this article, we learned how construction practices evolved from forging stones together to building skyscrapers.
It has been 21 years since the 21st century and practices like prefabrication, sustainable construction, green building construction, conservable energy construction have already been adopted by the construction companies. DMG Construction Canada practices environment-friendly construction & most of our construction projects are self-powered. We think that 3D printing in construction is going to be the next big thing for the construction industry, what do you think?

Construction Waste Management
Introduction
Construction industry alone is responsible for 24% of global waste which is almost a quarter of the global waste materials. The construction waste is not only heavy but also bulky and it consumes more space after being dumped in the landfills. Since the construction industry is growing rapidly, the concerned authorities have instructed construction companies and contractors to make effective waste management plans which we will discuss later but first, let's learn about what kind of waste construction companies produce. The construction waste can be categorized into three following types:
1. Structural waste: concrete, plaster, planks, scrap metal, nail, bricks, insulation, wiring, etc.
2. Dredging waste: trees, plastics, dirt, rocks, rubble, etc.
3. Hazardous waste: thinner paints, mercury, stripper, bulbs, glass, etc.
Impacts Of Construction Waste
Construction waste has cynical effects on the environment and it’s related to human mental and physical health, one way or another.
Below are some of the detrimental effects caused by construction waste:
1. Air Pollution
Construction waste results in dust which results in air pollution, causing diseases and health infections for humans and animals.
2. Marine Life Disturbance
Millions of tons of construction waste are dumped into the oceans annually which results in the death of thousands of marine animals.
3. Forego
Can you imagine how many billion tons of recyclable construction waste have been destroyed, demolished, dumped from the start of commercial construction till yet?
Construction Waste & Recycling Statistics
The statistics of construction waste management were horrible in the early 2000 but after the concerned authorities took notable actions against the waste management plan of construction companies in 2015, the results have improved not only for the government and local people but also for the construction companies as well.
Let’s have a look at some of the notable results & statistics of the past 25 years in the construction waste management sectors.
Construction Waste Statistics
· Construction waste increased 400% in just 27 years ( 1990 – 2015 )
· 30% of building material ends up as construction waste.
· 85% of construction waste is concrete.
· Construction waste makes almost a quarter of the total global waste.
Recycling Stats
· Recycling generated almost 175,000 new jobs in the construction waste management sector.
· 78% of construction waste was recycled in the United States in 2017.
· Almost 98% of steel started getting recycled from 2016; 650 million tons each year.
· Over 95% of concrete was recycled & recovered in 2018.
Why It’s Necessary
Construction waste management is necessary because it can help in building a sustainable & healthier environment. Also, It has helped in minimizing the overall project cost up to 27% by recycling and recovering the waste material.
How To Manage Construction Waste Effectively?
By using the following 3 – R rule, we can manage construction waste more productively:
Reduce
As we discussed earlier that almost 30% of the building material ends up as waste, construction companies can reduce the waste management by performing analysis and smart calculations about the material needed for the project development.
Recycle
Construction companies can recycle the construction waste obtained from demolished buildings and infrastructures. Materials like steel, timber, planks, concrete, etc can be easily recycled.
Reuse
Construction companies can reuse the construction material obtained from recycling. The recycled material is almost as good as the new material and it can help in reducing the overall building cost as well.

Mining Hazards & Safety Tips
The mining industry is still considered one of the most dangerous industries to work in. Even after all the advanced equipment and methodologies in construction, mining construction is still in the top 20 unsafe industries to work in. Although the risk factor in mining construction is not very high, the injuries caused by it are more severe than in any other industry.
In this article, we are going to talk about the challenges and hazards a mining construction worker faces and how we (DMG Construction Group) as a construction company are minimizing the risks involved in mining, and providing a safe and healthy work environment to our mining construction workers.
Ultra Violet Exposure
Open mines expose the construction workers to UV rays which cause skin cancer. Australia has the highest number of skin cancer cases, and 78% of them are construction workers. UV rays are also harmful to eyesight, construction workers have been reported to have slightly weaker eyesight on average. The UV rays damage the cornea and sometimes make people visually impaired.
Safety Steps Taken by DMG Construction Group
· We conduct routine skin check-ups at all our construction sites on monthly basis.
· If natural shades are not available, we provide artificial shades to make sure our staff doesn’t get stressed and tired.
· We take all the appropriate skin care measures including appropriate sun protection and skincare.
· Our working hours favor our employees too. Our employees usually reach the construction site at the first light of dawn and take a break when the sun is at its peak.
Musculoskeletal Disorder
Any harmful impact on bones, muscles, blood vessels, and nerves is considered a Musculoskeletal Disorder. MSDs are very dangerous and fatal, they are often caused by heavy-lift or fall.
Safety Steps Taken by DMG Construction Group
Slower MSD is more serious and dangerous. We organize medical and psychiatrist check-ups after every 3 months to make sure all our staff is healthy. These routine check-ups play a strong role in diagnosing any kind of disorder in its earliest stages.
Chemical Hazards
Mines are filled with toxic and harmful chemicals, for example, coal mines are full of polymeric chemicals which is dangerous for health. These chemicals can cause multiple fatal diseases like respiratory problems, chemical burns, etc.
Safety Tips Taken by DMG Construction Group
Our construction suits are designed with the core purpose of preventing our staff from exposure to chemicals. We have established standard operating procedures which are compulsory for every employee to follow to prevent them from these chemical hazards.
Noise
One of the major problems faced by mining construction workers is the loss of hearing or hearing damage. Working in mines often causes tinnitus and hearing loss. Extensive noise from mines can make you stressed and cause fatigue.
Safety Tips Taken by DMG Construction Group
We install absorption panels and vibration dumpers in multiple parts of our mines which ultimately results in less vibration and noise.
Our health and safety assurance team take quality assessment tests multiple times to ensure the work environment is comfortable for all construction workers.
Dust
Mines, especially coal mines are responsible for black lungs; a fatal disease caused by inhaling an excessive amount of coal dust.
Safety Tips Taken by DMG Construction Group
Although black lungs are not very common these days, we still provide high-quality inhalation respirators to every construction worker. The safety of our employees is our utmost priority and we don't compromise at any level.
EndNote
The mining industry is dangerous like any other industry but if we follow SOPs and take all the precautionary measures, we can make it a Zero accident industry as well.
It has come to our notice that fake recruitment agents are using our name to scam people and a few people have posted DMG Construction Group Fraud alerts on various platforms. Remember, we don’t offer jobs to anyone if they don’t qualify for the immigration. Please verify any jobs you are being offered, if it has been sent to you with any email address that doesn’t end on @dmgconstructiongroup.com (example [email protected]) it’s not from us.
Thank you.

A Day in the Life of a Construction Worker
I’ve been in the construction industry for the past 25 years. I started as a common construction worker (labor) and retired at the post of a construction manager in a reputable construction company. I have worked extensively to achieve what I have achieved in the past 25 years. I switched 3 companies in my construction journey took a break from work for 3 years to get certifications and degrees related to construction and project management.
In my 25 years of the voyage, I've experienced unforgettable moments; both good and bad. I've made friends I can always count on, I've seen some staggering architectures and landscapes which I don't think I would have seen working in some other industry. Hence, we can say that the construction industry has its charm and perks but it also has some dangers which we are going to discuss further in this article.

The Good Side
Highly Rewarding Industry
Construction workers have a relatively high income than other workers. The construction industry is one of those industries where the salaries are relatively higher. As your experience and knowledge grow, you are going to be paid extremely well.
You get off to Work Relatively Early
Another good thing about the construction industry is that you can get off between 2 pm to 5 pm and can enjoy the rest of the day with your friends and family.
You Don’t Have To Wear Fancy Dresses Everyday
If you hate changing ties and suits every day, the construction industry is your way to go. You don't have to wear fancy dresses in the office, just a casual, comfortable dress, often provided by the company.
Astonishing Buildings
I can testify that I would have never seen the staggering and astonishing architectures and landmarks I’ve seen in my journey of 25 years if I had a different occupation. I’ve been to places prohibited for normal people like mines, nuclear energy plants, etc.
If you enjoy the sight, you must consider the construction industry.
Generous People
You won’t find more generous people than construction workers anywhere. I’ve made a lot of friends in my journey of 25 years; friends I can rely on, friends who would do anything in their capacity to help me. Construction work is often harder than any other work; it requires help and support from your coworkers very often and believe me, I’ve always received more help and support than I ever expected.
The Bad Side
Early Working Hours
Everything comes with a price, getting off early from work sounds good but you have to wake up early in the morning, between 3 am to 5 am. Most of the construction work happens in the daylight. You have to reach the construction site before sunrise. In my starting years, I had a lot of trouble waking up and getting ready to reach the site but I got used to it within 6 months.
Extra Working Hours
I don't know if you'd consider it as a good thing or a bad thing but I hated this throughout my journey in the construction industry. There are certain days you have to work a few extra hours, you'd surely get compensation for these hours but I don't know if it is worth it or not.
The Ugly Side
I can't forget the accident that happened at one of our mining projects in Canada. 6 of my coworkers were trapped in a mine for 3 days, without food and water and any other source to communicate. Luckily, our rescue team found them after 65 hours of continuous searching. Two of them were already dead.
This is the ugly side of the construction industry, one wrong step and you could risk your life and sometimes, the lives of your coworkers as well.
Conclusion
In general, construction is a highly rewarding industry with a lot of perks and benefits for the employees but you have to be very careful every single time.
If you're planning to join the construction industry, I'd recommend you to go through the programs and policies of the company you're applying to.
I’ve worked in Canada my entire life, below is the list of the top 5 construction companies in Canada according to my opinion, please note that the list is not in any particular order.
1. PCL Construction
2. DMG Construction Group
3. Birds Construction
4. Kiewit
5. Graham Construction
