i know this topic is a bit overdone, but i wanted to make a more sfw romance & relationship headcanon meme! most if not all of these questions are related to romance and topics that may arise within romantic relationships, but without explicit nsfw topics!

It had been far too long since Sephiroth had contacted him. He had been on a mission that sounded personal enough to seem desperate. Or as close to desperate as Vergil had ever seen him. But it had been over a week since he heard from him. He was getting impatient and restless, pacing back and forth when coming up with a plan to find him. Nero had volunteered to find him while his personal spy had gone out to gather any information she could. His son turned up empty-handed while the spy returned with vague leads. After a lot of failure and killing out of frustration, Vergil opted to go on his own.

Nero went with him to watch his back, dragging some trusted devils with him. Despite the large number of people with them, it still took them nearly another week to get to where they needed to be. It was suspiciously quiet, but Vergil ended up ignoring the possible risk he was taking by charging in. Any enemies he did come across were cut down in one vengeful slice. All the way to the room Sephiroth was in.

Rage was replaced by utter shock and horror. His vision tunneled as he slowly went over to his beloved, magically sending Yamato away so he had both hands free. "Nononono!" He wanted to put his hands on Sephiroth but feared he would only hurt him even more. Tears brimmed his eyes as he panted in confusion. "Seph..." he whispered and cupped his face as best he could. "Sephiroth! Please be alive!" He looked over his open body again, trying to figure out how to help him. But first, he wanted to make sure the man was alive. "Can you hear? Please!"

Would Vergil wonder where he'd gone? Would Vergil try to find him? He tried to cling to what he knew was the answer to those questions--yes, yes, a thousand times yes--and yet he could feel his mind drifting into doubt.

They had lured him into a trap using one of his 'brothers' and the threat of harm coming to them; a classic that preyed upon Sephiroth's softer-than-it-should-have-been heart. His arrival yielded only an army and even he, with all of his strength and ability, what was he in the face of enough tranquilizers to bring down a massive beast?

He had little memory of what came after. The laboratory, the sterile room that echoed his screaming back at him as he struggled against straps and drugs. The screaming that had become painful keening as his wing was ripped off, a trophy for his captors, no doubt. The paralytics that kept him docile and dazed as they collected this sample and that sample from him: hair, saliva, blood, flesh.

Cut open, bleeding, then they left him barely breathing but for the mask over his face, eyes vacant, while they went to tend to other things.

Vergil looked back at him in surprise. His eyes examined his face, checking to see if he was being truthful. "Are you sure?" he asked, "I'm fine. I can..." He paused and looked away, obviously stifling a yawn. He thought about it momentarily before moving to get the baby. He positioned himself so that he could pass him to Sephiroth.

"Have you ever held... Never mind. See how I'm holding him, do the same thing. Make sure you keep his head up. He doesn't have that much strength in his neck just yet. Slowly, he started to pass Nero over to him, making sure the other was still comfortable with the suggestion.

Sephiroth, too, looked away after a moment that seemed to be an eternity; prolonged eye contact was and always would be awkward for him. Something about looking into someone else's eyes made him...uncomfortable.

"...If you show me what to do, I could feed him?" he volunteered without thinking about it. "Then you could rest. You look like you need rest."

Vergil nearly snapped out of it when Sephiroth said that. But he didn't move from where he was, keeping his steel blue eyes on him for the moment. "H-Hi..." he responded softly. He stayed there for a little longer before looking away, his face turning a tint of pink. He cleared his throat looked back at Nero, hoping Sephiroth hadn’t noticed the look in his eyes.

“My apologies,” he said softly. However, he didn’t move away. He remained just as close to him as he had been. “I should, um, probably feed him.”

"I'm your friend. Of course I'd be by your side." To Sephiroth, it was nothing because Vergil had always been one of the only people not to treat him strangely because of his hair or his eyes, or because of his awkwardness or, even, because he had a wing (if they ever caught a glimpse of it). Vergil had taken him under his wing, had always been patient with him as he struggled his way through society's spoken and unspoken rules.

He should have been thanking Vergil instead.

And he really did not know why Vergil was looking at him like that again. But it was nice, the more the older boy looked at him that way. With kindness. With compassion. With...something Sephiroth had no idea how to describe.

"...Hi," he uttered into their closeness.

Nero started flailing happily, trying to grab the toys. He pulled on one of them, which stretched a bit before it slipped from his little hand. Music started playing from it, causing Nero to smile and laugh a little.

Vergil watched with a fatherly smile, giving the baby's head a little pat before again giving his attention to his friend. "Thank you for standing by my side. Even with all of the nasty rumors about me going around." It wasn't until he turned his head to face Sephiroth that he, too, realized how close they were. He paused, the look of surprise in his eyes before it slowly started to turn into the previous gaze. He didn't know what it was or if it was just him, but he swore he could feel the air around them change. While it was very odd to him, he realized what it was.

Did he... Was he falling for his best friend? A man? He had only felt this way towards girls. He didn't think this would ever happen, but...oddly enough, he was not against it.

"I could cut it," Sephiroth volunteered, but it was far from a serious suggestion. He never cared much for his hair beyond ensuring that it remained clean and, usually, out of the way; it could grow as long as it grew, as far as he was concerned. It was only hair, even if it did hurt when pulled.

"...Thank you...? What for?" He turned around, and realized that Vergil had sat down very close to him. Far closer than they had ever been before. Was it the tiredness? Sephiroth supposed that looking after an infant must have been tiring work, but he wouldn't know. All of the infants he'd known had been silent, designed not to cry or to fuss. And then there was the way Vergil had looked at him only moments before...

It made Sephiroth feel strange. Not in a terrible way, but in an unfamiliar way. Like he wanted him to look at him that way again.

Vergil chuckled. "Not all. He doesn't grab mine. Perhaps because my hair isn't long like yours," he said, letting the baby shake the toy around. He was silent momentarily, looking at Sephiroth with a soft gaze. The look in his eyes remained soft like they were when looking at Nero. But there was a hint of a different emotion with the other teen.

"Hey, uh, Sephi—" The toy smacked him in the face, cutting him off. He looked down at the baby with playful irritation and then sighed. He got off his bed and went to the play mat on the ground behind Sephiroth, setting the baby down so he could play with the plushies above him. "There we go." Vergil sat down unknowingly close to his friend, facing the other way. He didn't realize just how close he was. "Thank you," he said, finishing what he would say before.

For all of Sephiroth's confusion, he did handle it with grace, staying perfectly still while Vergil and his son wrestled with the hair. He'd rather it not be pulled from his scalp, and he'd really rather not cause harm to the baby.

Once his hair was freed, he straightened up.

"It's okay," he replied. "Do all babies grab hair? He's strong." He sank down to sit in front of Vergil on the floor, legs crossed, but well out of any reach of the infant. He didn't want his hair grabbed again, or anything else.
