SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 9

Ouch

Also Jane thinking the bomb was the Halloween party has me fucking cackling now after the last two episodes. Like ah you poor sweet girl it will get so so much worse.

Lots of…hearts hurt this episode. This is not organized whatsoever so bear with me.

I still think Olivia is out of line for blaming everything on Jane. Even Buddy recognizes that she has nothing to apologize for at the dance. I understand her feeling hurt and betrayed and putting her hurt and anger on Jane is easier than putting it on herself. I am genuinely shocked that Mr. And Mrs. Valdovinos are accepting of their 16 year old daughter marrying her teacher when less than a year ago she was locked in her room all summer for having a relationship with said teacher.

I feel bad for Nancy, I truly do, her social life is crumbling around her and her facade isn’t giving her any help. The Brutal Honesty number was a bop and the heart to heart that she had with Jane and Cynthia was really sweet.

Ms. McGee you poor poor burnt out assistant principal with an incompetent principal. I want to give her a hug like Jane. If the show is renewed I would be so pumped to see her transition from being a thorn in the gangs sides to being someone the T-Birds respect and fear from the movie. I also loved her standing up for herself in needing an assistant.

I am in love with all the Pink Ladies and T-Birds interactions we got this episode. Cynthia being accepted by the T-Birds, bonding with Gil in the car and talking about their hearts, Nancy and Potato building a dumb plan together (I’m curious as to what she wrote in the letters to make the others drop what they were doing to go find her), Cynthia and Edward 🥹 talking it out, the six of them going to find Olivia together.

Bro the last 5 minutes had me crying. We had no Richie this episode (I’m not sure about the timing but I think he might’ve been doing an Outsiders play at the same time?). Them getting to Olivia’s house looking for her and Richie “I’m sorry I thought you knew, he was put on a bus this afternoon” Olivia how would they have known? Huh? You sure as shit didn’t tell them. ANYWAY, poor fucking Gil trying his hardest only to be blocked each step of the way. Cynthia and Nancy comforting Jane in her room as she cries, Cynthia giving Jane Richie’s jacket as she cries and leans on them, the three of them being utterly lost in what to do.

Buddy literally just love triangle hopped as soon as he said goodbye to Jane he has feelings for Hazel who is dating his best friend. There’s more about the socs but I don’t care at this moment.

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 8

I am piggybacking off of @pinkladiespledge post about Richie and I didn’t want to clog their notes with my multiple part essay.

ALSO TRIGGER WARNING FOR BRIEF MENTION ON NON-CON FANTASIZING. It’s one sentence right after Buddy asking Jane to date in secret.

Richie is so good. I saw a post about how Richie is Buddy’s foil and I 100% agree. Buddy is touted as the good guy because he’s clean cut and popular and Richie is a bad guy because he’s in a gang and doesn’t try to conform when in reality Buddy takes advantage of his situation and privilege. In his letter to Jane he admitted to cheating on tests and drinking, he also had chances to come clean to Jane about the election but backed out each time. He didn’t care one bit about the effort that Jane put in to fix their reputations and he threw it away with locker room talk and then has the audacity to ask her to date him in secret? Let’s also briefly mention his “girls are supposed to put up a fight” comment bro there is nothing sexier than full enthusiastic consent now fuck off with your nonsense. Richie on the other hand is a good guy when it comes down to it. He has respected Jane’s boundaries from the beginning and respected her enough to tell her the rumours being spread about her despite not wanting to get involved. He listened to her campaign speech in detention and didn’t fold to peer pressure and joking along with his buddies at that moment. He drove her home when she was overwhelmed and walked her to her door and respectfully greeted her mother. He watched her debate on tv and went with the girls to pick Jane up and cheer her up even though the debate didn’t work out for any of them. The only time he was disrespectful towards her was at Halloween when he was trying to ask her to go steady and his confidence was shattered when he say Jane talking to Buddy. After his day bender he shaped up and genuinely apologized without expecting anything to go his way in return. He came clean about his feelings and told her to take her time to think it over and hear what buddy had to say. He recognized that what Jane and Buddy do is none of his business and accepted that. He then went home and cleaned his room and was hopeful. Jane gave him an answer he didn’t want but he still respected it and that didn’t change his feelings for her.

We can even expand our world by including how Buddy and Richie treat the people they don’t find attractive because that’s the biggest tell of all.

Buddy puts on a nice front but in his letter to Jane he tells her he and Susan had sex before they broke up and saying he never loved her without any regard for what Jane could do with that information and the impact it would have on Susan’s reputation. He doesn’t stand up to his friends when they bully other people. He leaves Hazel to be awkward on her own to be with his friends and while he’s outwardly nice to her in public he uses her as a backup basically someone he’s nice to and friendly with but doesn’t put in any extra effort to include her. Richie had been nice to people outside his group, he showed respect to adults (that weren’t being disrespectful to him) he asked Dot to the dance because she was crying and alone and respected the date enough to not back out when he learned Jane was alone now too.

I respect the hell out of him not flipping his lid on Jane when he’s informed that she and Buddy kissed after he ended things and went straight to “you took advantage of her” for not telling Jane about the election.

I am scared for episode nine and what will happen after he’s let out of jail because we all know Buddy didn’t get arrested and just sent home with a pat on the back. I’m worried that Richie is going to question if Jane is worth it and Olivia being in the state she’s in isn’t going to be impartial.

Alright this is an appreciation post for Richie “Heart Eyes for Jane” Valdovinos. That boi has loved her from the second she stopped him in the hall to ask about the rumours. This boi fell in love within two months of spending time with Jane. Not even dating just through Olivia basically they kiss like what 3 times and he’s crying to his boys about being in love with her. Even when they “broke up” he still voted for her let alone voted in general despite saying he doesn’t vote. My guy might as well propose by summer with how fast he’s going.

UPDATE:

Okie dokie artichokies now that I’ve had time to think more about the episode and refine my thoughts and not on my half hour lunch break at work let’s do some thinking. Updates are in pink.

There was a lot to process in this episode and I would love conversations and thoughts about it too.

Anyway that was a backslide episode all around and I’m sad for them.

Olivia, Olivia, Olivia… I’m disappointed but not surprised. It seems jealousy and jumping to conclusions is a Valdovinos trait. I don’t want to seem like I’m demonizing her but if I was an adult witnessing all of this first hand I would of told her not to take it out on her girls or make any rash decisions, I understand she’s a teenager and that she herself had an overwhelming two days, what with deciding to let Mr. Predator go, being forced to trust Susan’s word about presenting to the PTA and then the whiplash of Jane hugging Susan like she missed something crucial during drivers Ed, the dance being accepted by the PTA, having a boy she has a “flirtationship”with ask her to said dance, setting up for the dance, then being told that her not meeting mr. Predator made him realize he wants her (typical narcissistic behaviour I might add), being told he’s left his fiancé for her, him kissing her, her rejecting him, then Susan walking in but not saying anything (which is sus to Olivia but we as viewers know she’s trying to be genuine), being excited for her date and the dance, suddenly being barred from said dance and thinking Susan is to blame and all this before there’s the spontaneous sharing circle which admittedly would ruin anyone’s fun. Susan does have some apologizing to do before she makes the progress to do better in good faith but Olivia, she didn’t say anything about Mr predator until you spilled her beans. She got Johnny Vavoom to the Frosty Palace. It’s also not Jane’s fault that Richie and Buddy got into a fight. She decided to go with her girls, which didn’t work for her but she did decide instead of back tracking with either of the boys to just go stag which good on her. Jane even let the boys down gently without lying to either of them. Olivia you could have gone after Gil and cleared things up saying he kissed you and you rejected him. Instead you backslide and go see the predator anyway (I understand Olivia is a child and a victim but I can still be disappointed that the progress she made last episode seems at the moment for nought it just means I’m invested in her story and characterization) I truly think if Olivia would’ve taken a calming breath none of the problems in this episode would have happened.

Cynthia, I am sad for you and your desires in the time you’re in. It looked like Lydia really wanted to go with you and I think you could’ve asked her even under the cover of as friends but I understand you don’t know your feelings fully but yelling at shy guy and insulting him isn’t chill and I hope you can come back from it and be friends.

Nancy and Jane seemed to be the only level headed ones this episode but Jane already had her backslide episode.

I feel I was partially right about Richie and Dot in that he was trying to make her feel better about potato and wasn’t trying to make Jane jealous. Also her poor nose.

I’m kind of glad Richie was the one to tell Jane about the stolen election and not drunk off his ass Buddy. Buddy had multiple chances to come clean but chickened out and even though he said he went to the FP to tell Jane, there was nothing to show that was his intention in the preceding scenes.

In conclusion, EVERYONE NEEDS COUNSELLING

I know I’m skipping over a bunch of things that happened but I have no space in my brain for organizing my thoughts and I invite conversations and opinions on the episode so please!
