숫자가 불어나 저렇게 떼거지로 몰려다니면 명칭도 한국/중국에서는 황충으로, 영어로는 Grasshopper가 아닌 Locust(로커스트)로 바뀌는데, 다른 종의 대량발생과는 비교조차 안 되는 억 단위로 시작한다(…). 숫자가 엄청나기에 사람들도 제대로 못 다닌다고. 사막메뚜기(Desert Locust)들은 한 무리가 1천억 마리까지도 나오고, 하루 자기 몸무게의 곱절에 달하는 작물을 먹는 식욕을 지녔으며 메뚜기 떼 1톤이 하루에 사람 2500명분 식량을 없앤다고. 최고 기록이 로키산메뚜기가 세운 최소 12조 5천억 마리니 말 다했다.(발생한 규모를 보고 1마리당 차지하는 부피를 나눠서 대략적으로 계산한다.)
