I am the yellow finch that came to her feeder an hour before she died. I was the last living thing she saw, so my responsibility was great. Yet all I did was eat. Through eight long months of winter the black oiled sunflower seeds had gone untouched—not a single one of my kind or any other kind had approached them. It was too much work. Even if we’d had the strength—which we did not, half-starved as we were—we were not in the mood to crack anything. On the morning of the twenty-second of April she took them away and refilled the feeding tube with sunflower hearts—sheeny niblets whose hard outer husk had been stripped away by some faraway, intricate machine. She went back inside and waited. From my branch I could see her do the things she liked to do—she picked up a towel from off the floor, she filled out a card stopping the mail, she boiled water, she stared into space. She saw me coming. Her face flickered with, if not exactly joy, the ordinary wellspring of life. It’s true there was a sheet of glass between us. But I could see the seeds of her eyes and the upturned corners of her mouth. I ate a heart. I turned my head. She looked at me as if I were the last living thing on earth. And as I was, I kept on eating.

Maybe he was confused

Maybe he didn't know what he had done to make his brother hate him so much

Do you think Cain cried?

Did he regret killing his brother?

Do you think he looked at his brothers blood on his hands and wept?

It was the first murder

The first time a human had ever been killed

Maybe Cain was scared too

Was he scared when his brother didn't get back up?

Did he cry while he buried him?

Did his shoulders shake and his sides heave as he clawed through the dirt to make his little brother's grave?

Did he leave an offering for his brother?

Did he offer up the best of his crops?

Did he honor his brother in a way he had never honored God?

Maybe Cain loved Abel more

Hi, and welcome to a new year! It’s been awhile, but Broads & Broadswords is gearing up for its second issue. You all blew us away with your enthusiasm last round, and we were able to donate more than $9,000 USD to the Transgender Law Centre, which was really incredible.

This time, we’d like to take the opportunity to open applications for the zine – so if you were disappointed to miss out last year, now is your shot! Applications will open in a few weeks, but this update also serves as an interest check, so if you’re interested in taking part, please fill out our short interest survey here. All are welcome to apply!

Can’t wait to take the next steps of this journey with you all!

ANNOUNCING … THE OFFICIAL TBOY SWAG ZINE!

you don't need two types of needles to apply to tboy swag testosterone zinepionate: a tboy swag zine so let’s make some art about trans swag!

this will be a free digital zine! we will be accepting art (drawing, collage, photo edits, etc.) and writing (poetry, stories, comedy, essays, really anything you think would work) ! we will also accept multi-media projects like videos or audio just as long as everything is somehow related to tboy swag, being trans, or really just anything you relate to your gender!

SOME BASIC RULES GOING IN:

this is pretty obvious but whatever you are submitting you should be ok with us (the mods) distributing your work digitally.

NO PORN! NO GORE! some blood, needles/medical, and some drugs are allowed but keep it light. we want people under 18 to be able to read and participate.

on that note we want this to be a fun zine! we may do a zine that deals more with heavier topics (like mental health issues, abuse, etc) in the future, but we would prefer to avoid potentially heavily triggering content for this one.

just know that depending on how many submissions we get we may not be able to publish every single submission we get. we love you all and we want to support all of your creativity so we will try our best to include as many as we can (if that’s the case)

Good afternoon and happy winter holiday of choice! I have been MIA lately due to getting a new heckin job (a grueling and lengthy process requiring me to behave like an Extremely Normal Person! including the horrors of shopping for a mature professional outfit, blech) and then getting covid just in time to ruin my xmastime ~*inspiration staycation*~ which i had been looking forward to for months. Ok but what does this mean for you? It means I’m kicking the deadline for this zine down the road a few more weeks.

Submissions for Show Me Yr Selfie are OPEN until at least February 1, 2023.

We are looking for artwork and writing about selfies. This is a pretty open-ended topic and we encourage you to get creative with your interpretations. Suggested prompts: an essay about vacation selfies and what it means to perform being present / an exploration of how selfies create a record of transformation / a photo collage of all the selfies you’ve taken in bathrooms at concert venues* / etc.!

Contributors will receive $10 and two free copies of the zine. To submit, please first read through this document, then fill out this form. We will respond with instructions for uploading your submission file(s). Please do not email your submission file(s) directly to us.
