I haven't seen it talked about (as there seems to be only a little discussion of it on here so far) but one of the things I love love love about The Residence is that she gives up on the investigation.
Cordelia Cupp, world's best detective, who solves the unsolvable, gives up... because she prioritizes the reputation and livelihood of a man she respects and who respects and supports her in turn. Chief Dokes knows that continuing to pursue the case will mean the end of his career, but he says nothing... until she asks. She asks. She knows that there are consequences to her dogged pursuit of the truth, she asks about them, and despite the fact that Chief Dokes is willing to accept those consequences, she says "I'm not."
In a genre that is often characterized by detectives who keep pursuing the case to the ends of the earth - consequences and fallout be damned - I am desperately in love with this character who is blunt and clever and justifiably arrogant and still shows such compassion to those who support her to say "I will not ask this price of you, even if you're willing to pay it, because what you built your life around is not more important than finding my answer."
We have multiple anecdotes through the series about her obsessiveness and indefatigable pursuit of her goals and unwillingness to give up until they're achieved, and yet she will not throw over Chief Dokes for the sake of seeing this thing through.

i don't see a lot of people talking about the residence on netflix but it was such a refreshing watch. i love when shows stick to the proposed theme (in this case, murder mystery) and do not add sub-genres for mainstream attention. the comedic elements were perfectly timed and not loosely thrown in for a few laughs. it's witty (!!!) and really dove into each suspect's (should i say the "interesting people") story.
i think didier gotthard's particularly stood out to me, because of how explicitly close he seemed to wynter. besides jasmine, who was his assistant, wynter's relationship with the staff was either implied or a fleeting scene. out of all the people who didn't work in such close proximity with him, gotthard was the only one who acknowledged his dedication and years of service, and for someone as overworked and neglected as wynter, you can really see him break character there. he was dedicated a corner of gotthard's gingerbread house, the same one which was going to be displayed to america's most important guests.
up until lily ruined that plan and quite literally broke didier.
wynter was probably going to be appreciated for his work by people beyond the white house, a treatment he seldom received. that argument between him and gotthard really gave me a headache because how sad must it be for him to swallow his emotions and let things go under the guise of professionalism?
honestly, the scene that went from didier displaying his gingerbread houses over the years with pride and glee written all over his face to that of dejection as his house sat ignored downstairs made me tear up. he believed wynter would protect him but nobody seemed to empathize with him.
his bitterness really gave depth to him as a character + a potential criminal.

this + how prophetic it seemed to be because there was a sudden silence following katie's death after jamie was charged. except the parts with briony where jamie was villainizing katie to justify her murder, the viewers don't see anything beyond that. no follow-up on her family's grief, jade coping with the loss of her only friend, nothing. katie became another name in the book of victims of male fragility.
even now, we are talking about jamie because he lived.
The parallel in ep 2 of the girl detective telling the guy detective how in the end she is pissed because the story will end up revolving all around Jamie and him telling her no it’s about Katie only to come to the conclusion in the end for the motive of her murder to be that it happened because SHE bullied Jamie.
Almost putting Katie at fault for Jamie murdering her. Like now we understand why he did it, she was “bullying” him.
Oh smart social critic narratives they will never make me hate you
#this show was a scary commentary on how fried the brains of children are becoming#owing to unsupervised media access#adolescence#netflix

i found myself skipping through a lot of scenes that "didn't add to the plot", especially the one where jamie's family is on the way to the garage. i felt they were too long and highly irrelevant, riddled with stories with an odd sense of normalcy. but that's exactly when it struck me.
these scenes were made to be "boring", ill-fitting and highlight how ordinary the family was. they were your next door neighbours with nothing remarkable going on for them and that's exactly WHY these takes are significant.
jamie isn't just a netflix character – he's your classmate, a colleague, a friend you're no longer in contact with, a person down the street, your mailman and the list goes on. all average people that may find themselves victims of this internet culture that's a breeding ground for misogynists.
his first confession to the crime was "i didn't do anything wrong", and considering how he didn't show a speck of remorse during his sessions with briony, he held fast to this perception. he knows he did it, and he believes it was the right thing. it's horrifying how realistic it is because all of us have met people that had their questionable beliefs validated by the internet.
there is no plot, WE are the plot. it's happening around us, right now.

has the empress been dropped, following its renewal for season 2, because im a sucker for period dramas and though it may not be the most historically accurate show out there, it is definitely up there on my list! i think i happen to recommend it to most people i meet too. the visuals, the angst and the casting could not have been more perfect <3
look at them.
(i choose to tune out the later bits for personal(!) reasons.)

you can also find me on my writer's blog, @doeszincwrite ~

‧₊˚✧ that's me btw! ✧˚₊‧
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁ im zinc and i go by she/her. im 18, and i spend way too much time watching series and movies than id like to admit ₊˚⊹♡
i mentioned this to one of my friend's friend once (basically a stranger) and they asked me what my favorite movie was. i zoned out almost immediately and took a good minute to refresh my memory. at that moment, i hoped i had something like a little jar to store all the shows ive watched like mini oreos, and then thought to myself, "wait, i literally can!" hence, this blog.
im southasian and the solace i find in desi movies is unfathomable. my fave movie of all time will certainly be barfi. one minor inconvenience, and im on netflix, bawling my eyes at jhilmil and barfi's life story.
‧₊˚✧ some movies i remember ive watched are (in no particular order):
hasee toh phasee ☆
bulbbul ☆
qala ☆
om shanti om ☆
english vinglish ☆
piku ☆
queen ☆
jodhaa akbar ☆
qarib qarib single ☆
zindagi na milegi dobara ☆
dil dhadakne do ☆
ajeeb dastaans ☆
there are so many more i haven't mentioned, but keeping up with me will surely give you a hint ♡
my comfort series is schitt's creek and for anyone who's watched it, it shouldn't come as a surprise my day doesn't begin without hearing moira call out for david in that quivering, snobbish voice of hers.
‧₊˚✧ on that note, a few series ive watched are (in no particular order):
the queen's gambit ☆
kim's convenience ☆
the glory ☆
money heist (español and korean) ☆
the empress ☆
sex education ☆
the good place ☆
kaala paani ☆
unorthodox ☆
the kingdom ☆
dear child ☆
bombay begums ☆
genres im into:
period drama ♤
romantic comedy ♤
psychological thriller ♤
slice of life ♤
fun fact:
i could never sit through horror movies, and never will. horror is a genre i specifically stay away from because i don't do well with all the paranormal stuff. the warning that flashes on the screen for the faint-hearted is probably for me.
for you ♡
my asks are open to every frustrated rant, passionate movie review or a simple show suggestion. feel free to send in messages at any time of the day!
i hope you'll enjoy catching a glimpse into my daily fascinations, as much as i will living them :) 𖡼𖤣𖥧𖡼𓋼𖤣𖥧𓋼𓍊
