duel: terror stories
taken from the 2003 richard matheson book.
youād think it was a holiday.
hey, where are you, kiddo?
thereās no one else to talk to so iāll have to talk to myself.
youād better stay in bed today. thatās a bad cough you have.
kid, this has caught me as wide open as you.
iām taping my voice.
you can go to sleep in my lap.
shh, darling. get your breath.
never did eat a big breakfast. donāt believe in it.
you donāt have to talk, sweetheart.
if you say a word of it to anybody iāll have to leave you behind.
just stay close to me.
please. it wonāt do any good.
this is my island.
donāt jump the gun. i donāt want that on my conscience.
youāre in good physical condition.
iām not a day-dreaminā kid.
no one takes any risks. thatās an order.
would you help a buddy?
weāll go by bus.
going to be a nice day.
and when next you opened your eyes, you were back in this room.
iām not stopping you. youāre stopping yourself.
and remember, this is war. and only war.
you dumb bastard.
i wish i was a poor fool. a poor fool who could believe in something.
hon, get your robe. youāll catch cold.
god closes a bright curtain on our play.
nothing, darling, nothing. iām just nervous.

it's nicer to live in her head some nights. sheās free to follow the fragmented memories of spiralling hallways and grandeur, venture through without limitation. in her thoughts sheās showing mary every nook and cranny she could have possibly found, every little thing that caught her by the heart and whispered yearnings of being a forever home. the regret of leaving it, that she went looking for an identity only to have left the one she wanted behind.
ā home. ā it makes her feel guilty. the idea that she ran already, had been given an opportunity and didn't cherish it. the nagging of a conscience sheās been told wasnāt worth anything to her like this; was she being selfish ? ā not that homeā the house my grandmother gave me, i stayed in it for a while before i came down here. it was quiet, like you were in one of the few places the world hadnāt found yet, ā
thereās a passing moment, deathly still when she finishes, head lulled against the warmth of maryās form. ā she told me you could disappear down there for eons and it just ... wouldnāt matterā ā a laugh, then, until finallyā ā she also told me if i was any bit normal that should have worried me, so. ā
