tbhk is the story about doomed relationships. It's quite literally in every dynamic in the story both platonic and romantic - Hanako and Nene cannot be together because one of them is a ghost, and if he wasn't he would be generations older than her. Kou and Mitsuba cannot be together because one of them died and is fated to wander forever, and the other is of all things an exorcist. Hanako and Tsukasa cannot be together because one of them made a deal with a devil, so they can't ever meet again even in the afterlife. Teru pushes Kou away from his life because he's a strong exorcist fated for the cruelty of their family legacy, and Kou who remains weak and sympathetic to the spirits cannot take his place. Akane and Aoi try to be together, but considering Aoi is fated to be led as a sacrifice and Akane the timekeeper governs, maintains order and passes judgement, they're literally lined up by fate to end in tragedy. Aoi and Nene had to fight for their friendship because one of them was fated to die early and the other's death could save her. Tsuchigomori and Hanako, where do I even begin? Number Six and Sumire. Yako and Misaki-sensei. And then Kou and Nene, the seemingly most healthy relationship in our cast, were never even meant to meet if not for literally all of the above.
