sorry if i'm gonna be quiet for a while. my country recently introduced laws that make it so that in order to use social media to the fullest (not being able to view ns/fw content and in a few cases, not even having access to dms), i HAVE to give the sites my id/face scan.

it goes into effect july 25th. it'll probably effect here too, since this place allows mature content (tho not full on ns/fw)

i'm very distressed about it bc i might end up not even being able to talk to my internet friends. i don't really have any irl ones

i dont know how to say this in a clever eloquent way but i feel like a lot of rtc fans are very bad at judging exactly how weird ricky is. like, yeah, there's the alien catgirl thing... but when it comes to his disability, and his characterisation & backstory in relation to that, i think a lot of people lack a frame of reference for what "normal" could mean in this context and thus misjudge where everything else falls in comparison to that

like for example, ricky naming his mobility aids? not very weird! many disabled people do this. i don't know exactly how common this is but if you're in disabled communities, you're probably going to encounter it. i get so weirded out when i see people talking like "it's in-character for ricky to have named his crutches because he's such a weird guy!" because it's literally not a big deal. it's a pretty unremarkable thing. he was not the first guy to come up with that idea and honestly he probably didnt even think of it himself sorry.

on the other side of the spectrum - ricky's parents taking a vow of silence in response to him being unable to speak? that shit is way weirder than anyone gives it credit for. i know everyone takes it as a given that ricky's parents are Eccentric and Quirky, you know with the 14 cats, but taking a vow of silence goes beyond that to the point where it borders on unrealistic. that is, if you interpret at face value and don't look into any potential implications, a huge life change with... no explanation for how it would benefit their son.

i have a whole long post about that alone because there are several more reasons tat this part doesn't make sense. and i kind of wish as a fandom we would lean more toward a "im aware that canon has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid-ass decision i've elected to ignore it" approach to this, rather than laughing it off with "yeah ricky's parents sure are weird". because again, this is not a Weird Quirky Detail on the same level as the potts family having 14 cats, this is extreme. yes, i'm aware that this line wasn't really supposed to be taken seriously; i simply think that if the writers wanted us to not take it seriously, then they should have written something less serious, and come up with a joke that was actually funny.

ricky being a Weird Guy is one of the things i like about him, but like... before we all sit around having fun laughing about how he's Such A Weird Guy we should actually do enough research to know whether something is actually Weird and Quirky in the way we think it is. because if you see something youre not familiar with and your first thought is "i bet that's weird and quirky" then you may simply be misjudging. okay peace out
