While Evey is, then, able to overcome the fear she has been living with, she is reduced, in a way, to a pawn. Are we to understand, then, that his “breaking” Evey was his way of ensuring that she would participate? Is it justifiable, then, for him to have deceived and manipulated her by way of torture, humiliation and isolation? I’m inclined to say no, and that if it is, indeed justifiable, then would the government not also be justified in torturing Evey for their ends? Sure, they’re demonized over the course of the film, and I won’t defend them as a government agency, but if the means to an end are the same in both cases, this puts V squarely amongst those who we’ve come to hate over the course of the entire film. Remember that he gets himself shot and killed before he can demolish the building, and in fact is only able to pursue his final justice against Creedy and Sutler by charging Evey with the duty of engaging the tram system. Ultimately, the treatment she endured by his hands was no different, presumably, than what she would have endured at the hands of the government, and indeed V uses the same tactics the government presumably used on him so as to convince Evey that she was in a government facility. Aside from the logistical problems that make it hard to believe that Evey could have believed she was in a government facility (she would literally have seen only one person the entire time- during her processing, having her head shaved, all the interrogations etc, and we’re supposed to believe she never saw this person’s face…), the idea that V was justified in his kidnapping of Evey is problematic on moral grounds. In capturing and subsequently torturing Evey to relieve her of her fear, we are confronted with one of the most problematic scenes in the film.
