Those villainous substandard Indian pitches !
Watching Renshaw and Smith bat in Pune or Pujara, Rahane, Renshaw and Rahul bat in Bangalore was testimony enough for the fact that if you trust your technique more than the shenanigans in any pitch, you are bound to succeed ! We are effectively down to the same old tirade against sub continental pitches....too bad for batting ...doing too much for spinners !
Tumblr media
When batsmen are bundled out at Perth or Kingsmead or Headingley, it is lack of technique and skill, if the same happens in India, Lanka or Bangladesh it is down to poor pitches ! When will the western media grow up and realize that if you have the right technique and the gumption you can do well in most conditions. Are they so scared of the spinning ball that it is still attributed to some mystic eastern art rather than simply a different set of skills !
Masterful exponents of spin like Warne, Swann, Benaud, Lyon, Vettori...i could go on...they would all disagree with this assessment.
Williamson, Root and Smith are shining examples of the fact that mastering the conditions is as important as mastering the bowlers and the pitch ! Kohli is still to prove himself in English conditions so I'll add his name when we tour there next ! For every pacer that is rendered toothless in Asian conditions, there is a spin bowler that is dropped for lack of effectiveness in Oz, NZ or England. It is horses for courses whether India tours Australia or Australia tours India...that’s the way it normally works, unless you are skilful enough to succeed anywhere.
Tumblr media
Greats are called that for their ability to succeed anywhere...Tendulkar, Dravid, Lara, Ponting, Hayden, Kallis, did not earn their titles by being good just at home.
'Test' cricket is a test of character, skill and technique, for both the batsmen and the bowlers. Home and away conditions are a challenge, that's all people need to understand, move on and enjoy the game !

Resolutions...bah..
The trouble with resolutions is…they sound nice and positive the first time around…we keep at them for a month or so if we are lucky….then they start sounding outlandish and even obnoxious around March-April…and by June end we are openly laughing and mocking them ….we start analyzing what could have been by October, get into a life funk by November and then restart the process by mid-December! Life and indeed new year resolutions do come full circle….and not in a good way....

CA -ance time
We've been experiencing some paranormal activity in our office for the past one week. The spectre seems to have a strange fixation. It simply prepares invoices, mails it to clients and disappears 😛. There are some 20-30 invoices sent to clients that no one has a clue who has sent. When we checked with our clients, they say its from some strange ID, but contains our office invoice. We are planning to have a seance tomorrow to see if we can ask the spirit to complete our filing work as well. A good friend says it must be a CA's ghost. Billing is the priority even on the other side ...

A good day for world cricket
When I started off posting about the t20 World Cup, the idea was to cover all the India matches. The semi depression over India's defeat in the semis was tempered by an otherwise decentish tournament for the men in blue. The plan was to catch snatches of the score for the finals or over the radio. Nothing more. The plan was pretty much in place till early evening when news of the Windies women winning the women's t20 cup started trickling in. I began to sense something momentous in the offing, but still resisted the urge to follow the Eng vs WI final like a normal cricket fan. That plan was quite achievable when I heard that the Pommies had scored just a middling score despite the efforts of the impressive Root. Huh, who wants to watch a one-sided final. Then heard that the top three windies wickets had tumbled for next to nothing including Gayle and the semis heroes - Simmons and Charles. GAME ON! Tried following the game on the radio as I rushed home just in time to watch Samuels play an unsamuelied innings. With wickets falling at the other end I expected that the Windies would fold the way they did against the Afghans. The last over came about with Samuels off strike. Stokes who had closed the game against Sri Lanka clinically had th ball. The largely untested hulkling Carlos Braithwaite took strike and the match seemed all but dusted. Suddenly one ball slipped down the leg disappeared into thw crowd and the equation came down. Another monstrous mow over midwicket and suddenly the English captain was biting his nails. Stokes took a deep breath and tried to get his yorker right the next ball. The bat twisted in Carlos' hands but tge ball still sailed over the fence. The dream was still alive! The next ball again hit the stratosphere as the Windies came hurtling out to the field. They had created history! Just like that the crowd's sweethearts were doing the Champion dance in unison. No malice towards their opponents, just a plain and simple love for the game! It's been a while since I've seen a cricket team other than Afghanistan play such clutter free cricket. While the Windies competed an incredible treble in world cricket, cricket owes them and the Pommies a debt for bringing high class cricket back to the living rooms of chanting fans. Good show ICC. Now get the associates more matches and let the sport grow beyond the full members.

Proud when we win, prouder when we lose
In the aftermath of India's exit from the t20 World Cup, the online world is already replete with memes and jokes about India not planning for Simmons, the no ball syndrome, etc. I did not see a single barb about India playing poorly! What?! India lost..Surely they screwed up badly! Well, the answer is that we did not play badly at all! Right from Rohit's electric start, to Rahane's calm down to Kohli's fantastic innings, there was intent and purpose, a hunger to win! Bumrah and Nehra were excellent first up but then the dew factor was telling. The spinners not being able to grip the ball, Simmons amazing charmed life and Russell's muscle proved too much.. The fact that despite their power hitting, the Windies still won only in the final over shows that India's effort cannot be belittled. We just lost the little moments that could have made a difference. The no ball from Ashwin was marginal, the jadeja catching effort on the boundary was touch and go..it was just a matter of these little things. Despite India's solid batting effort, it was frankly the Windies all out Fielding effort that won the game for them. They stopped numerous boundaries with ridiculously good diving saves that meant we were atleast 15-20 short from what could have been a safe total. Having said that, it wasn't the ideal campaign for MSD and he would have loved for his batters to have been more clinical and consistent. The batting order's lean patch rivalling Kohli's purple one, nearly cost us a place in the final four. However, to quote Williamson...It wasn't meant to be our day...they simply hung on for that crucial bit longer. There is no shame in admitting that we were done in by a better team on the day. Helped my dollops of luck (Simmons, Simmons, Simmons) a masterclass from Kohli was nullified. That takes some doing! Well played Windies. Well played India. #Bleedblue Proud of the boys! Tough Luck, but we can hold our head high. P.s. MSD will retire when there is a worthy successor behind the stumps. Don't hold your breath. P.p.s All those armchair critics who have a word or two to share about how things could have been better, stand in the team's shoes for two minutes, soak in the pressure and see how it feels! Then go home, slink back into your armchair and shut up!

A tale of two innings of joy
For me today's day of cricket was special for 2 Innings of stand out excellence. The first was the Fielding and bowling of underdogs Afghanistan as they managed to do something that even South Africa could not, defeat West Indies in a tight match. The second was the story of yet another masterpiece from the modern champion of high pressure chases in key matches from Virat Kohli. More on that later. The first honours belong to the irrepressible Afghans and their infectious enthusiasm on the cricket field. I really hope that ICC has taken note of their giant strides in world cricket and reward them with more matches against the top sides. The associates have routinely struggled to make themselves heard in the top heavy world of cricket and nobody has been banging on the doors louder and more insistently than Afghanistan. Their verve and fresh approach towards the cricket green is something a lot of jaded giants can learn from. Whether it is the unfettered hitting from the Mohd. Shahzad and Najib Zadran or the over the top celebrations from Hamid Hassan, there is something very honest about the brand of cricket on display, each time the Afghans take the field. Congrats to Ashghar Stanikzai and his team for their proud achievement! The innings of the day of course belong to the name that most Indian cricket fans now take with respect and awe - Virat Kohli. I have rarely heard Sunil gavaskar wax eloquent for any batsman so frequently other than Sachin, Lara, Ponting or maybe Dravid. Kohli in such a rich vein of form that it is impossible for any Indian supporter not to expect the extraordinary from this young man! His knocks and their quality and maturity routinely defy his age. This is one man who isn't happy just being marked for greatness, he is hungry to win for India. A lot of teams make the mistake of leaving the job for the next guy and so and so forth resulting in heart breaking losses. Kohli doesn't believe in that philosophy and India is lucky that he converts more often than not, irrespective of the batting failures around him. Team India need to pick up their act and regroup swiftly. Luckily they are meeting another team - the Windies who are another individual based unit with little cohesiveness. If they do get past them in the semis, India will probably have a grudge match against New Zealand who are the form team to beat this season! GEAR UP MEN IN BLUE! Kohli is due a failure or two by the law of averages and if that happens to be on the day of the semi or the final, then there needs to be atleast 4-5 who put their hand up and be counted! Let's hope for the best and trout that Virat and Team India bring the World Cup back!

If Dhoni is setting up a management school, I'd like an admission form please!!
The net is already broken with pro-dhoni and pro-india memes, tweets and status updates. So going back to that last ball of the match is something most of the online world has already done! Let's look at some cool management tips or life lessons (depending on who's reading it) most of us must have surely picked up from today's humdinger between India and Bangladesh : 1. Luck is the hard work you put in to be in the right place at the right time. #dhonistumping 2. Giving your opponent / competition respect is a sign of humility and greatness only few possess. #dhonipresentation 3. Making mistakes is easy, dwelling on them even easier, letting those mistakes ruin your day perhaps the easiest thing to do. A champion is one who dusts himself off and stands up to be counted despite his / her shortcomings. #bumrahdeathbowling 4. Always cross the line before you celebrate your victory. Someone hungrier than you might snatched it away from your jaws at the last moment. Not because you did not deserve it but because you got careless near the finish line. #thatlastdelivery 5. If you are doing well at something , make every moment you spent doing it memorable. #kohliinform Whew! That was not so quick and much more verbose than I expected!! While its time to savour the sweet victory on this full moon night and live to fight another day for the men in blue, it's also a day of eclipse and bitter disappointment for the impressive Bangla tigers. They measured the game so well for 39.3 overs and then just like that...poof it went into the night air! We didn't win this one as much as they lost it to be frank! Glad to know that member nations of the ICC are now more or less as strong if not stronger than the others. Welcome to the big boys club Bangladesh, you have not disgraced yourself at all! For every thing that the wily Dhoni threw at you, you had nearly all the answers. Guess you just weren't prepared to expect him to throw himself at the stumps as a last ditch effort to win the day! Tight match, nerve wracking, heart warming, heart breaking, edge of the seat stuff! Hold on #teamindia just three more matches to win back the cup. #WT20 #BleedBlue

Oh Hindsight, where arghh thou ?!
Such is the nature of sport and social media in today’s age that no sportsperson can escape endless analysis on his/her technique, comparisons with yesteryear greats and a relentless scrutiny of what went wrong, what could have been better and what should have been done.
Armchair critics, ‘experts’ who have mostly only been mildly successful and that rare breed – people who have actually played a game / sport with authority and are respected for their deeds rather than their words, all of the above are armed with a dangerous weapon – hindsight ! As Billy Wilder had once quipped Hindsight is always 20-20 or more relevant still a witty one from Steven Levitan – “I once called the head of a network a liar. In hindsight, I should have called him an incompetent liar”!
What could have been is always a romantic notion that remains just that, a notion. It cannot change what happened and filling up airtime with monotonous programming on what could have been does not change that fact.
Speaking specifically about yesterday’s ICC World Cup T20 match between India and Pakistan, I’ve been reading and seeing the reviews and interviews of numerous experts on cricket, some of who I truly consider good students of the game. The one thing that shines through is how right they are and in the same breath, how they couldn’t have been more mistaken. While all the analysis is spot on and makes you wonder how could the teams have gotten it so wrong. They should have gone in with that extra spinner, openers should have been more patient, why did Ashwin / Aamir not complete their quotas sooner, Raina and Dhawan should be dropped, etc. Fact is, all this did not happen. The result is what it is. Rubbing salt on the Pakistani wounds won’t make things any better and raising India to the high heavens after just one win won’t do wonders either.
If Dhoni / Afridi were armed with a time machine they would have loved to travel to the future and try and change the past. But that’s the thing about the past. It’s the past, coz its already happened. We cannot go back in time and shoot Hitler before WW2, just as we cannot go back and tell Rohit to just simmer down and play out the over.
Move on, let everyone get ready for the next game, cheer your respective teams and realize that it’s just a game!

Cricket trolls need to get out for a walk more frequently
I had written earlier this week about how Indians players were being unnecessarily targeted for poor performance on the field now just as I predicted all those fair-weather friends including me have come out drums beating, face paint plastered and sloganeering for the Indian team and more importantly against the Pakistani team. Cricket trolls were already in overdrive before the last ball was bowled, trying to look up various rhyming words for kohli with something that will make a snide against Pakistan. It was a good match, we played well, it wasn't exactly one sided, we won, they were gracious in defeat, end of story! why do we have to keep playing the match in our heads for days to come without realizing that the players have moved on with their lives! I am still ok with people to want to sit around and analyse the game after it happened, discuss the finer points of the game without probably ever having actually played the game themselves. but I really don't appreciate unnecessary player bashung for no apparent reason other than their belonging to am opposition team, be it Pakistan or anyone else Paki bashing is a national sport which a lot of Indians could take up as a career and I'm not saying it as a compliment. TRolling has become an international phenomenon and I guess media personalities and sportspersons take it in their stride as a part of package that they will be trolled once in a while and probably that means people are talking about you and may keep you popular or talked about for a few more minutes! In this age of memes and Instagram and hashtags, we have lost the simple pleasure of enjoying something for what it is... A game and remembering that particular day or evening simply as a fun time with friends where we had a couple of beers and pizza had a good time and look forward to the next outing! Maybe if a cricket trolls and trolls in general took a break and even went for a walk once in awhile, they would have less time for trashing the imaginary lounges of opposition teams and supporters and have more time for behaving like normal human beings! Maybe if we just realize that whatever the result, we have to go back to our regular lives in the morning, things might be different... Nahh.. Who am I kidding!! India!! India!!

Why do we have to calamatize (yeah just coined it!) every Indian defeat
There are several reasons why I am up tonight, but one of the biggest reasons to is trying to decipher what went wrong with the Indian team during its match against New Zealand. I realize that I am probably among those who is giving this a lot more thought than the players themselves, despite knowing that this is just a game. I realize that by agonizing over what could have been and cursing our team I am acting exactly like the fair weather friend I accuse others of being when the Indian team loses and chants the National anthem when we win! I think you can take a leaf out of football fans and see the way they support their chosen team across Nations and clubs believe in the style of play season after season despite defeats despite severe losses sporting very proud slogans that proclaim that they are proud in victory and prouder and defeat. I noticed that particularly amongst Asian countries playing cricket, we fans tend to write off our players a lot more frequently and a lot more easily than our counterparts in other continents. I think our team would be a lot better off if we just give them some breathing space and allow them to play the natural game that has made them the champion team that they are and leave the freaking out over the odd defeat because believe it or not this team does have what it takes to live the cup and even if it doesn’t I think these youngsters will go places. We just need to give them more time and also need to realize that they are humans after all and they are also affected by every word written against them and every word spoken against them. They are playing for the country after all and at best we are armchair critics who rarely leave the comfort of our homes to help out these players. So let’s just chill, enjoy the game and look forward to a cracker of a match on the 19th. Bring on Pakistan!

INDEPENDENCE DAY...
As Indians, lets not celebrate just another annual holiday and let that patriotic fervor die away, with the dawn of the next morning.
We need to feel sad for ourselves that we haven't been able to contribute to our nation's growth over the short span of our lives.
Lets join hands that we will individually contribute at least a finger of growth in whatever small way possible to our country.
Lets make this promise to ourselves to rewrite the present and the future to a vision of our liking.
We need to be hopeful that tomorrow will dawn a better future for us and our children, with more greenery and smiles per sq. ft than concrete shanties and a frowning population.
Let every Indian shake up from his / her slumber and wake up to the fact that unless makes he /she alters their perception , he / she cannot expect the nation to change by itself.
Let this and each following independence day be a reality check for each one of us, that our job is not yet over, our children are still not safe, our wives and mothers are still in danger...
Lets celebrate our independence by working hard every day that we keep its integrity and keep the flame of our nation burning brightly for posterity...
JAI HIND !!
