Year 3 Workbook - Chapters
Artist name: Lenny Ruiz
Type of Photography: Street Photography
Main interests:
Looking through his Instagram/Website and exploring his series I see that Lenny Ruiz likes to work with light and tries to involve it as much as he can, as well as using shadows to create different atmospheres and set the mood he’s going for. Lenny Ruiz brings out the prominent colours a lot which makes the photos vibrant and creates a nice vibrant contrast between the subject and background.
Like/Dislike:
I like the way he uses shadow and light. The way he positions his subjects instead of placing into typical places or spots which someone may not think about.
What do I take from this artist?
When it comes to figuring out what the best distance between my subject and me is, instead of finding one perfect spot I will use a variety of lengths and angles as I can see Lenny Ruiz creates interesting composure just through the angles and distances.

Name: Sammy Soju
Type of Photography: Documentary/Social Life Documentary
Main interests: Sammy Sojus work earlier started off as a mix between street photography and documentary/headshots which created a path for him that he is exploring at the moment. His recent work is mainly done on a film camera and it focuses on a personal story of maybe his way of thinking portrayed through his photography but his focus mainly has seemed very personal as well as very interesting.
Like/Dislike:
I like the way he uses film photography to capture his photos and still is able to create this never ending look which creates an instant change of the way you look at the photograph. With keeping up to date with Sammy Sojus work and his social media I can see he uses simple things and objects to create these amazing pieces such as low budget lights/fairy lights but just using them in a way where they come into full effect.
What do I take from this artist?
To try and practice with my film camera more and adapt the skills because being able to produce photos like Sammy Jonu does through his film is a very impressive skill.

Name: Sean Tucker
Type of Photography: Portrait, Street Photography
Main interests: Sean Tucker focuses onto 3 main pieces of work which is his Street Photography, Portrait and Instagram work. Looking at his Instagram and Street Series I like the way he works with light, creating angles and very prominent shadows. As well as his Instagram work, I enjoy the way he creates his series with portraits and street photography.
Like/Dislike:
Sean Tucker’s photography has a very nice colour scheme but personally some of his blacks and more shadow related work his tones are too strong/dark making the image a little bit more straining to look at.
What do I take from this artist?
Have a larger selection of different types of work.

Name: Programezero
Type of Photography:
Social life Documentary
Main Interests:
Looking through his Instagram mainly there’s a pattern which he creates and that’s with objects and people. The colourway of his photographs are always mainly pastel vibrant colours and the photos always have a focus point which is either a person or an object relating to the background.
Like/Dislike:
I like the way programzero has stuck with his pattern and is still exploring more things within his practice.
What do I take from this artist:
If I have a successful outcome from a shoot I will stick to the idea and try to develop it more and explore within the idea.

Name:
Robin.ek
Type of Photography:
Documentary/Street Photography
Main Interests:
Robin.ek’s work is mainly street photography related with a theme of minimalism where he creates his subject the main focus point and the background adds to the theme instead of creating the whole set.
Like/Dislike:
I like the colour theme but I think sometimes mixing up from dark to bright creates a nice look in your work and shows contrast and your ability to switch between different themes easily and can adapt instantly.
What do I take from this artist:
When photographing my subject to sometimes focus mainly on the main point and creating something with just that instead of involving other things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Mischelle Moy
Type of Photography: Editorial
Main interests:
Mischelle Moy’s photography is super interesting in the way she captures and edits her photographs, creating this luminous after effect on all the colours as well as producing these vibrant pastel colours which make the photographs burst in colour that mixes amazingly.
Like/Dislike:
I like the way she makes every photo pop, even if there’s not a lot of subject cover there’s still either the background or one thing which is creating a beautiful contrast.
What do I take from the artist:
Looking at the way she brings out her colours and mixes them together to create these smooth colour palettes is something I’d like to transfer onto my photography.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Gareth Mcconnell
Type of Photography:
Documentary
Main interests:
Gareth Mcconnell has a variety of Documentary shots and mostly all of them are distorted through colour or through the film it’s self. The reason why I like this is because I enjoy the way the colours create a distortion & from that they mix together which creates a new layer of colour. With this in mind if you look through Gareth McConnell’s photos you always see so many different shades of colours.
Like/Dislike: I enjoy the way the colours mix creating different shades.
What do you take from the artist:
Looking through this work I like the way Gareth Mcconnell explore colour and is not scared to experiment with it.

Self Publishing and the Photobook. Lookbook - Photobook
Creating this look-book helped a lot throughout the whole process, first of all deciding on what fits well together is a major part to creating one which makes sense and has a narrative. Therefore by creating this I focused a lot more on the important parts of the process instead of doing things that were not necessarily needed to be changed. For example a few of my shots were similar to others but using the look-book i could  easily pick between the photos.
I created a few images with the same pattern but placed in different positions so having a look through this it guided me with what narrative and pattern i was trying to create.

Self Publishing and the Photobook. Solve Sundsbo - Photobook Inspiration.
Solve Sundsbo ‘Points a la ligne’ is a collection of patterned shadows that are placed across the body. Solve Sundsbo painted his model white and turned him images black and white, by doing this it automatically brought the contrast up which meant the shadows on the model can be quite strong. I like that he used different shapes and patterns, some of the shadows were symmetrical lines which he placed across a naked body, this was done purposely for him to create leading lines meaning the image will be easier to understand as it has a guide to look with. By the shadow being so heavy on the model, this almost makes the bumps and curves on the body look like sand nudes, creating this illusion and pattern, which is consistent throughout.
He also made the model wear different coloured lipstick each time, by doing this Solve Sundsbo made sure the first thing which would lead the viewers to look at wold be the lips as there is contrast between the colour and the black and white imagery.
Trying to re-create this I need to decide whether my images will be black and white or colour, and whether I will use a studio or on location. However, I want to create the same concept with using shade, by experimenting with different styles of shade I want to create a collection of using different objects to create my shadow.

Self Publishing and the Photobook. Richard Avedon.
Richard Avedon started his photography not realising he is becoming a photographer, he joined the army and photographed faces on the battlefield. taking thousands and thousands of photographs he eventually decided to quit and become a full time photographer. His skill was so precise he knew exactly what to look for in his models, the clothing they are wearing, accessories they have or things which made them different from other people. Richard Avedon looked for specific things which built that character, with this in mind he photographer portraits of famous celebrities and people with big names in this world and was able to pick out their specific personal traits which no other photographer was able to do. Looking at a few of these portraits you can see the images have their own story, depending on who the person is behind the camera you can feel the importance they have to the world. Richard Avedon was able to create a story with one image as simple and effective as no one else could.

Self Publishing and the Photobook. Photobook - Idea 1
Tumblr media
Looking through Instagram I found different ways to use lighting working with materials. For my collection, I want to be able to show the viewer my model but also balance out the lighting work. The reason why I chose these photos is because the way they are using the light and materials it creates an optical illusion of patterns and sequences, which imprints on the models face for this instance. I want to be able to create a shoot where I will be using my model as a canvas and using materials as a way of expressing a message, using different patterns and materials I want to paint an image on my model. I have two ideas which I want to try, my first one is using different gowns, sheets and dresses  with cutouts so I can align that with my lighting and project it onto my model, I also want to do this with a film camera so I can create a vintage look but modernise it with my light effects. My second idea is to use a prism glass on my photos, by allowing the light hit the triangular prism it creates different light effects on the photo, I like the idea of this because it makes the photograph look distorted, by also using a film camera these photos will be another style of using different light within the collection. I like the idea from one of the Tom Craig shoots on Oman where he makes the boy look lost, I also want to do this but instead I will be distorting my images with the prism making the location look lost not the model.

Self Publishing and the Photobook. Tom Craig.
Tumblr media
Tom Craig a British Photographer who specialises in documentary. The reason why I chose this photographer is because his portraits are developed with a vintage style but there are hints of modernism within the photographs. Tom Craig worked with campaigns like Mr Porter, Louis Vouitton and created publications for Vogue, Vanity Fair and many more. One of his collections was taken at Esquire in Oman. Looking at these photos I like the way he makes the model look like his lost within this world, the portraits he created seem to me like there is an on-going mission where he is trying to figure out where he is. The lighting which Tom Craig is using I want to adapt that to my work, it seems like he is using natural lighting on a film camera and setting his model to be in the correct position aligned with the sun. The way he exposes the model to the light it makes me feel like he is trying to balance the work with a film camera creating a vintage look but also include modernism with the way he is working with the light, creating flair and acid effects on some of the film. My portraits I want to use the light as one of my main points to focus on, I like the way flairs are being used and the colour scheme he used so my idea is to use a glass pryzm and place it around my photos create this optical flare. I also want to create these photos on a film camera as the glass pryzm will have a different feel and energy since it will be applied to film and not digital meaning each photo will be developed differently.

Self Publishing and the Photobook. Emma Tempest
Tumblr media
Emma Tempest is a British photographer who is currently based in New York, she worked with companies such as Trussardi, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren and a lot more high end companies. I created a collection of some her portraits she has taken as her way of creating the image and placing things in her photograph is very creative. Not sticking to the traditional portrait lay out where you have a simple lighting set up such as Rembrandt Lighting, this is where the key light is at nearly 90 degrees on the left side, and a fill light on the opposite side of the camera as the fill light. These 3 images of the model in the water to me created a narrative if they’re correctly placed next to each other. Each shot has a different angle but also depth of field, from looking at the first image of the close up it gradually goes into a wide shot where we get more of her face and shoulder and then the last image is another wide shot establishing her position. The reason why I like this is because she is interacting with the set and materials which to me seems a lot more eye catching as I have more things to look at and create narratives. I like the way she used the black dress in the water as it leaves a silky finish in the photo but also reminds me of a blood bath as the silky dress lays across the water making it look like a liquid, I want to be able to use my materials to its full potential too and instead think outside the box on what I can correlate with materials in my images.

Self Publishing and the Photobook.
Going back to 1843, is when Anna Atkins created the first photobook. She pressed botanic specimens onto light sensitive paper which then she put together and created a collection called “Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions”. The idea of a photobook was recognised world-wide and took off in the nineteenth century during 1930’s. As the years go on digital photography came into action, which meant everyone could create a photobook because people had access to smartphones and cameras. The collectors market started to rise and from then people created competitions and awards. Being able to self-publish a photobook gives the photographer the advantage of being original and the work will always be individually thought about so therefore everyone’s work gets different recognition. Since photography now is very competitive on who can create the better photo a photobook is supposed to create a feeling of creativity and relaxation, for you to be able to create whatever inspires you, whether you want to create a narrative, a rhetorical question that is up to the creator.

The layout of these images interest me since I want my magazine to have the same layout. Instead of placing an image onto the magazine in a classic form of centering it I want to make the layout of the photograph interesting so the viewer can appreciate the photography but also the way it was structured. By looking at these images I instantly take in the fact these images have been placed purposely to catch the viewers eye, being able to create this means I can create a magazine which not only shows the photograph but I want to be able to create a layout where it also has a meaning behind it. Some of the images have also texts which is another interactive part in the photograph which I enjoy, this to me creates more chances for the photo to be recognised if it’s done correctly.

Thinking more about the idea of using a stencils, I decided to not go with that idea because i feel like there will be too much confusion going on in the photo. Since this is for a magazine i want the audience to quickly understand what is happening here, so by using different layouts in the photographs i can choose what the viewers focus on. Still wanting to involve materials my idea now is to have a shot of my model showing the outfit and also include a photo as one of the clothing features up close. Being able to balance that it creates an image with an explanation for the viewer showing them the outfit from far and then presenting the material up close.

Fashion Editorial and Advertising. Chen Shaoxiong - Homescape
Photographer Chen Shaoxiong is a Chinese photographer, painter. One of his pieces of work Homescapes (2002) was a constructed scene of house objects which he then created scenarios within the landscape of the stencils.
Chen created different collages and scenarios with the cutouts creating different landscapes in a household. By creating these collages each piece has its own story which creates an exhibition within each piece of work since they are all representing something else.
I also think calling it Homescapes leaves an open question to the public on what a home actually is. A homescape is a landscape which can be moved from one spot to another, a homescape is where you and your loved ones live, a homescape is where you discoer yourself, for Chen to create ordinary scenes within the household with ordinary house objects it I feel like it leaves an open question to the public on what a Homescape may actually be.
The stencils which he created are very clear and visible which makes it easier for the viewer to uncerstand the story within a few seconds. I want to re-create some of the stencils by creating different types of material and adding them onto my cutouts, my idea is to make them larger so when I place them in my shots with the models you can distinguish the stencils and the model since I will be creating multiple spots to focus on.
