What’s common between dreams and video games is that they both represent an alternative reality. Dreams are biologically driven while video games are technologically driven. However, they both encompass a similar part of the mind. 

Studies suggest that people who play video games are less likely to have nightmares because people who play video games are more likely to have control over their dreams and are also more experience dealing with virtual threatening situations. In fact, playing video game may turn a nightmare into fun for you, because you would treat the nightmare as an obstacle to face. Two explanations were proposed for this: playing video games improves ability to lucid dream (the awareness that you are in a dream). When you are aware that you are dreaming, you are less likely to submit to the emotions of the dreams. You also possess higher control. Two, playing certain type of video games prepare you for dealing with threatening situations such as those that occur in nightmares. People who plays lots of video games may report experiencing fewer nightmares due to the fact that they don’t really recognize or consider what counts as a nightmare. 

Here’s a study. Note that the study used mainly self reported questionnaires. Self reported questionnaires are subjected to personal biases. If participants figure out what a study is trying to get at, participants may influence the results to go a certain way. Hence, questions in surveys are disguised to prevent you from guessing what a study is about. In fact at the end of most surveys, there is usually a question that asks a participant to guess what they thought the study was about. This allows the researcher to potentially censor out biased results (my guess).
