what if I told you Mikage is about going against your nature to fit into a toxic ideal which you ultimately fail to perform due to your aforementioned nature, for a system that never was going to award you any personhood to begin with.

me: oh no! 😱 I dropped my phone 📱 in the dead sea 💀🌊 which has a famously high average salt 🧂 content of 290ppt, almost nine times that of the ocean. if only someone were brave enough to retrieve it for me 🥺
my best friend wound man (helpful to a fault): I will go ☝️🤕

On a related note, I would also love to see it explored how the Tau's view on romance differ from humans. They put so much cultural and emotional weight on the bonding knife ritual that imperials often interpret it as a form of a group marriage. But I doubt just summarizing it as that captures the full nuance of it, since I've seen it range from something as dramatic as a fire warrior squad that have survived multiple battles together, to something as casual as a group of earth caste coworkers that get along, to something as intimate as it being between just two relatively misanthropic air caste pilots that only got along with each other. (7th edition Tau codex also made Aun'Va have the Bonding Knife Ritual-rule with his ethereal guards, who are fire caste, so cross-caste bonding knife rituals may also be a thing, assuming the rule isn't there merely for the sake of mechanics.) What a human might consider emotional cheating may very well be perfectly normal for Tau, without sexuality coming into play at all. Also, the mandated pregnancy may also be exaggerated fanon. In the short story "Greater Evil", a water caste Tau proposes another for a "pairing" as they put it, but is turned down several times, despite the latter finding him "comely". So Tau do get at least some say with who they choose to procreate with.
Whenever the whole “Tau have to get mandated pregnancy” is brought up wrt to Human/Tau ships it’s usually presented as something tragic for the human, but I kinda wish people dug into that?
As in like, do the sexual politics of the Tau treat sex as something you just do for procreation rather than recreation, or do they just see sex as not that special and likewise don’t understand why humans get so bent out of shape when their partners have mandated breeding time?
Personally I would rather see more of Tau being casual about sex and treating it as not that important to their relationships. Because yeah, it’s fun and all, but it’s also just something they have to do for procreation and everyone has to do it, it doesn’t mean anything to them or have any impact on their relationships with someone else.

thought it was a one-off thing, but i've now seen multiple pictures and videos of red-bellied woodpeckers touching other birds with their tongue at bird feeders. why are they suck little freaks?
