Finally, we have entered the period where adaptation of the study has gained my attention. It began with this one (just like the others) accidentally. After I have a color combination that I like, I take photos and see how they sit with me. Not all of the studies survive. As I kept looking at this one it just looked like a painting. So I decided to try it and it was a great success! The following painting was conceived in the same manner but it didn’t end up looking like the study however the colors of that one were fantastic.

It was the fall of 2016 and I’m finally ready to began working on a larger scale. I quickly realized that I had been limiting myself by working small. I had forgotten so many techniques. I was caught off guard as a painter that was primarily interested in tools and technique. I began to elevate the process at every level.

Then I expanded the palette selection process by the addition of color treatments in January 2020. I simply tape some 9” x 12” oil paper onto my drawing board, coat them with matte medium (to mimic the surface of my canvas). After it’s dry, the experimentation begins!

Next up the addition of background color. I was planning to slowly introduce background color. I was still in the theoretical phase. Needless to say, I wasn’t ready. It was a painting session that wasn’t working. I took a break due to a headache and decided to eat and during lunch. Back to work I go…. quickly frustrated and still not feeling well when I aggressively shifted the dynamics of the painting in a short frenzied session.
Later while contemplating the failure before me and preparing to wipe the painting away…. I realized that I had some blue paint mixed up that I was planning to use so I said fuck it! The background was applied thick but loosely. At the time it seemed to save the painting from destruction but I didn’t feel it was that great. It was a revelation when I saw it in the morning.
In the spirit of giving, I ask you to please share this with someone who inspires you.

First, I began to select my color palette in advance of the painting session. It ushered in a sense of calm while building anticipation days before the painting session. Also gave the work more width and depth than my previous efforts.
Second thing was to extend my painting day. I used to work very fast. A painting typically took an average 1-3 hours. I realized working at that speed quickly derails a large painting. It began with simply taking a lunch break. Common now is an 8-12 hour session. More time these days is spent studying the painting than physically painting.
In the spirit of giving, I ask you to please share this with someone who inspires you.

I began experimenting with “color treatments” after I relocated from New York back to my hometown of Cleveland.
In the past, I used to blindly trust my abilities and react to whatever the first color I selected spontaneously had accomplished. I learned the hard way that process simply does not translate in large scale constructs that I had moved to NYC master.

Color Treatments
For the past four years I have been making these color treatments. I use them solely for the purpose of working out color combinations and the order they will be used on my large paintings.
So, I decided to create this website to offer these color treatments. Enjoy!
