You know, I feel like Merlin takes polishing very seriously. He complains about it of course, but he’ll stay up late into the night just making sure there’s not even a speck on the armor. Sometimes he’ll use magic to give it that first going over, so he doesn’t have to do all the work himself, but you better believe he always finishes it off by hand. It’s probably the one thing he’s really good at as a servant (because he’s not actually a bad servant no matter what Arthur says). And then this other person thinks he can teach Merlin how to do his job and actually deigns to “start with the armory.” Merlin resigns himself to bring retaught everything he knows, but then this other person does it WRONG. He’s too efficient. He works over the whole piece until there’s a glimmer of a shine and then sets it aside to work on the next one. He doesn’t take the time to make sure he’s gotten every spot, nor does he inspect the armor to make sure it’s not damaged as he goes (which Merlin considers a very important part of this job since it may not be noticed otherwise). He doesn’t even dry the things when he’s done to make sure the water doesn’t dry into spots or streaks. And he tries to teach Merlin how to do it WRONG. It doesn’t take long for Merlin to get so frustrated that he blows up at him. He takes one of the pieces that the other servant had just worked on and immediately starts pointing out every fault. He shows a smudge here, a spot there, and a tiny dent that needs to be worked out or else could become a weak spot in the armor. Then he takes the next one and does the same thing until the other servant runs away almost in tears (because he had prided himself as a perfect servant until then), and Merlin sits down to take care of the whole mess himself. He thinks he’ll never see the other servant again, but the next time he’s in the armory working on Arthur’s armor that other servant suddenly appears and watches him carefully, studying his every movement in order to learn. Merlin sighs, resigning himself to having a shadow.
