and of course part of this distinction between skyrim and the earlier games is that skyrim makes you The Guy, The Chosen One, etc. it makes you the hero who is supposed to save the day for everyone, and that means you have to be catered to in every single way so that you KNOW you're The Chosen One. it's much more of a direct power fantasy than the previous games.
like, in oblivion, you're not even the chosen one. you're just the guy who HELPS the chosen one save the world. the world treats you like you belong in it, like you're just some random adventurer who MIGHT be able to solve some problems but nobody's counting on it tbh. you have to find your own adventure in this world, but it's designed in such a way that it lets you discover that adventure without forcing it down your throat.
and i mean, even in morrowind where you ARE the chosen one, you have to EARN being the chosen one, it's a constant uphill battle to be recognized as anybody more than a pathetic outlander. people give you menial jobs because you're just a menial person. and even though you're "the chosen one" you're actually just a pawn for forces way bigger than you (like azura and vivec and the empire).
skyrim's emphasis on being a power fantasy just drags it down so much. and it sucks bc skyrim's world has so much potential to be great! there's a lot of good stuff in there! but instead of giving it to you organically it's like "here's a list of all the things we expect you to do bc we spent a lot of time on it so please play it the way we want you to :)"
