“Life isn’t fair!” you whine as you slump over in your bed, covering your face with your hands. “I wasn’t kissed once while at school!”

Your sister looked at you, and then looked at Percy who was sitting on the other side of your bed before leaving the cabin, leaving the two of you alone. She definitely did not want to deal with another one of your rants after hearing about it already the moment she arrived at Camp for summer. She also definitely wasn’t supposed to leave two people of the opposite gender alone in the same cabin, but hey, who’s going to snitch? Not you or Percy, that’s for sure. It was a stupid rule, anyway.

“Oh, are we at that point in our friendship where you rant to me about your failed love life?” Percy snickers, getting comfortable in your bed. Your neck practically snaps back to glare at him and he laughs, raising his hands in defeat, “Okay, okay. Seriously, though. We’re only fourteen, it’s not that big of a deal.”

“All of my other friends have had their first kisses,” you huff. “I feel left out, Percy! It is kind of a big deal.”

He shrugs indifferently and plays with a string from your blanket, “Hey, I haven’t had my first kiss, either.”

“That’s different, you’re a guy,” you roll your eyes, turning onto your stomach and pulling your pillow to your chest. “Ugh, you’re hopeless. I know I should’ve gone to Annabeth.”

Percy lets out an offended gasp, pressing a hand to his chest like you’d wounded him, “Excuse me? Hopeless? I’ll have you know, I’m a great listener.”

You shoot him a deadly look, “You laughed at me five seconds ago.”

“I laughed with you,” he corrects, though his grin says otherwise. You try to kick at him with your foot and he grabs your ankle, stopping you. “Okay, fine—at you. But only because you’re being dramatic.”

“I’m not being dramatic,” you huff into your pillow. “I’m being honest.”

He nudges your leg with his foot. “Look, if it makes you feel any better, I think you’re great. Like, really great. Honestly, it’s their loss for not kissing you.”

“Was that… a compliment?” You lift your head just enough to look at him suspiciously.

Percy shrugs again, suddenly interested in the hem of his shirt. “Don’t make a big deal out of it.”

“Are you blushing?” You squint at him.

“No,” he scoffs. “You’re imagining things.”

You push yourself up on your elbows, a mischievous smirk forming. “Oh, you totally are!”

Percy groans and throws a pillow at you, which you catch with a triumphant laugh. Then he says, quieter this time, “But, uh… I meant it. If you wanted your first kiss to be with someone you trust... I mean, I’m not saying you should, jus-just… if you wanted to, I wouldn’t mind.”

Your breath catches. For a moment, the teasing fades into something quieter, more real. You look at him, really look at him, and he’s suddenly fidgety—eyes on anything but yours, face pink, heart on his sleeve in a way Percy rarely ever is.

“You wouldn’t mind?” You sit up slowly, eyes narrowing at him warily.

He shakes his head, still not quite meeting your eyes. “Nope. Not at all.”

The silence stretches, not awkward but heavy with possibility. You don’t move for a long second. Then you lean over and press your lips to his. You’re not sure what to do with your lips, but you’ve watched movies so you tilt your head to the side. Percy’s hand slowly comes to rest on your cheek, thumb softly caressing. His lips are warm and slightly chapped, and the kiss is soft. Not something you expected from him.

At the sudden thought, you break off the kiss and lean away. His eyes are wide, staring into yours and you smile nervously, “There. Now we’ve both had our first kiss.”

He stares at you, stunned with a pink tint to his face. Then he breaks into the goofiest, brightest grin you’ve ever seen. “That was—uh, yeah. That was cool.”

You flop back onto the bed with a groan, feeling your face warm up. “I can’t believe I kissed you of all people.”

Percy nudges you again, chuckling, “Hey, I’ll have you know, I’m going to be very in-demand one day.”

You grin into your pillow, making sure he can’t see it. “Sure you are, Seaweed Brain.”

And just like that, the world outside the cabin feels a little less unfair.
