“i’m going to wager a big guess and say twenty eight.”

helena wasn’t even looking up as she said it, yet her voice sounded velvet-smooth like she wasn’t still sprawled where she was, half-plastered to a wall and embedded through the cracks like bad modern art.

she stretched her fingers with uncharacteristic reluctance, testing the waters as she sighed. this wasn’t as bad so it seemed; just all part of the good job.

sure, huntress had been punted into a wall like a basketball with enough force to stave in a skyscraper, but she had shaken off worse. and sure, she did lie down there completely still and unresponsive for a concerning five minutes — but she’d insist it was just an overdue, much-needed power nap.

letting out a soft exhale, she started to move — but didn’t rush herself; simply adjusted her mask back into place, rolled her shoulders and dusted them off, quickly patting down for any tears — not in herself, but in the far more important fabric keeping her decent and disguised.

satisfied with the structural integrity of her suit, she ran a gloved hand along the ground through stone and debris, cautiously feeling around until she found it — the familiar weight of her crossbow returned to her, and only then did she finally push herself upright, now standing face-to-face with whoever chose to play the role of her guardian angel.

civillian? vigilante? a third secret option? either way, the concern was noted; not necessary, huntress didn’t think she needed fussing over, but she appreciated the company nevertheless — and this was how she chose to say her thanks; lips forming a grin, as she said:

“y’know, you could’ve taken an over-under on how long i’d stay down. would’ve been some real easy money.”

she stops in her tracks, eyes flicking over her suited counterpart — gains a quick assessment of what she’s dealing with before she jumps back in.

“okay, that’s fair. that’s absolutely fair.”

both of her gloved hands lift in mock surrender, a gesture that signals ‘no worries’. she’s not here to pick a fight — not yet anyway — but huntress figures this conversation is worth one more shot. so, with a playful lilt, she adds:

“but, consider this: if i leave now and never come back, you’ll just be standing here thinking about what i was going to say, maybe even spend the rest of your life wondering.”

she tilts her head with an unserious frown. “do you really want to carry that weight forever?”

it’s a long shot, trying to climb over metaphorical walls meant to keep out. but if she is walking away, helena might as well take the last word with her.

“objectively speaking, one would say it’s the fact that i’ve killed — in politer terms, that i take lives and play judge, jury, executioner,” she answers with casual ease which resembled her straightforward nature rather than some sick form of enjoyment. “although i argue it’s worse that i haven’t regretted it. sorry, but i can just never muster sympathy for predators.”

“but,” and the ‘but’ always preceded something worse. “i don’t find that ethically wrong since i have saved lives that way. what i would consider the most morally abhorrent, out of everything i’ve done, is betraying. that, is what i would feel remorse for — because i truly am sorry for being dishonest and violating someone’s faith in me.”

“sure,” she says, her voice level and lucid, the hues of her eyes vivid and crystal clear, nodding her head at the second question. “when he’s six feet under.”

13. What could make you break your own moral code?

“hmm, i don’t really think of my moral code as something that can be broken.”

helena leans back, arms crossed, considering the question with a thoughtful tilt of her head. whether it was safe to confess or foolish to reveal her cards, she didn’t mind offering a glimpse into her noggin.

“it’s not a rigid set of rules — i see it as something i adjust as per necessity to do what’s fair and just. if i have to bend it to save a life or make the right call in a messy situation, i just bend it. simple.”

“but if you mean really going against it?” an exhale, followed by an intent raise of her eyebrows. “that’d take something big. life-or-death, no other way out. or a ‘your life matters more than my principles’ sorta situation. or, you know... last cookie on the plate, no witnesses nearby? yeah, that’s when things truly get ugly. c’est la vie.”

so i was writing this headcanon for one of my characters, and it got me thinking about how some characters are absolutely, to their very core, protectors, and even then they still need protecting! so i made this list which is similar to about five other memes i've made. feel free to add a "reverse" if you so wish! ACTIONS:

[ HAND ]: sender, having seen the receiver's encounter with the threat, gently takes the receiver's hand to assure them they aren't alone.

[ INTERVENE ]: sender wordlessly steps in between the receiver and the threat, facing the threat while shielding the receiver from them.

[ BLOCK ]: sender steps in between the receiver and the threat, this time facing the receiver while turning their back to the threat and blocking them from the receiver's line of sight.

[ BACK ]: sender places a protective and gentle hand on the receiver's back, preparing to guide them away from the threat.

[ DOOR ]: sender firmly but politely insists that the threat leave the building, and escorts them out of the door.

[ EXIT ]: sender physically catches hold of the threat and drags them away from the receiver, and outside of the building.

[ PUSH ]: sender places a careful hand on the threat to keep them at arm's length, and steps forward again to give the receiver more space between them and the threat.

[ SHOVE ]: sender runs over and forcefully shoves the threat back and away from the receiver.

[ SPACE ]: sender pushes between the receiver and the threat and begins to move forward, invading the threat's personal space as both a means of intimidation and a way of getting them away from the receiver.

[ DIVERT ]: sender arrives behind the threat and gains their attention, distracting them from the receiver so as to give them time to leave the area.

[ CLEAR ]: the sender firmly and clearly tells the threat that they are no longer allowed in the premises nor anywhere near the receiver.

[ ARM ]: sender wraps a protective arm around the receiver and guides them away from the threat and out of the premises.

[ PUNCH ]: the sender, having seen the receiver's reaction to the threat and the threat's lack of consideration, moves forward and punches the threat in the face.
