Critical Annotation
This map reflects my aesthetic interests in performance art. I am keen to focus on mixed media art, influenced by Photography is Magics (Cotton, 2015), and I seek to integrate more art forms based on my theme this semester.
I explored the critical framework of performance art and photography and mixed media art, combining contemporary art and referencing early performance art video for photography. This includes my first explorations of Dadaism, Feminism and superrealism, and I research a series of performance artists such as Klaus Rinkle, Maria Evelia Marmolejo, Carolee Scheneemanm, etc.
I placed the performing arts at the main place on the map, which guided me in developing my ideas. I was very much influenced by Eadwerd Mubrige and Etienne-Jules Marey, who are not performance artists, but whose work has been a decisive influence and a strong reference for me, and finally by sequential photography to reflect a sense of movement and mixed media art, incorporating elements of drawing and animation.
This map gives me a clearer picture of the scope of my research throughout the semester, including in the themes I explored this semester, the types of artists I researched, the forms of work I explored, and several works and performances that were key influences on my research. My photography theme revolves around the concept of repetition and time, from the quarantine of human beings to imitating the living state of animals, to show that they are struggling in an unreal space, constantly changing their emotions and living conditions to seek inner peace. The dance of the soul, Butoh, became the focus of my end-of-semester research, and its core is very close to the expression of emotions in photography, and my final work is almost based on this dance dynamic, so I put it in a more obvious position as a guide.
