This means that my free time with those I love is all the more important, to me and to them.

Among my volunteer works, I am the president of the board of directors of an association titled Youth Directions and Alternatives, or YDA. This is an extremely important and impactful organization; it provides local young people with programs, workshops, and recreational activities. In my function as president of the board of directors, I work to create the right vision for the organization so that the community’s needs are met in the best manner. When I, myself, was younger, I lacked an adult mentor and guidance figure. I now help the young people in my community to have such figures, knowing full well how important they are, and what they can teach to these young people.

I have an advantage in my volunteer activities in that I am a lawyer and a member of the New York State Bar Association - Douglas D. Viviani, Attorney, On An Innovative Legal Business Model. I have seen many people who turned to crime at a young age, and I am committed to preventing this from happening to the young people in my community. Given my unique knowledge, I am very well prepared to meet this challenge, and to work with it to benefit the community as a whole.

Douglas D. Viviani, is under no illusions that the most rewarding experience that he has so far experienced has been working with the Youth Directions and Alternatives (YDA) organization. The YDA is a private, non-profit community and youth agency dedicated to serving young people and their families in the school districts of Elwood, Harborfields, and Northport/East Northport. The YDA is geared to youths from every walk of life, and designed to provide them with every opportunity to succeed in life. One of the most vital services it performs is to provide an adult to stand alongside these young people, offering support and mentorship during disputes, either in the home, at court, or in schools. As Douglas D.Viviani points out, imagine what it must be like when a child has nowhere to turn, no one to support or believe in them. As he says, it must be a truly horrible feeling, and one YDA aims to eradicate.

Douglas Viviani admits to always having had a soft spot for children. He himself is generally regarded as an amusing, laid back, personable individual, and he believes this is why he is able to connect and empathise with the young people he works with. As an attorney, his clients are predominantly adult, so his days (and most evenings) are spent around adults, solving adult problems. Young people have a different view of life, and Douglas Viviani considers it reward in itself to see the world through their eyes, untarnished by the cynicism that seems to be inculcated in adults as time goes by.

Childhood has the most profound and far-reaching impact on the rest of our lives. As a social community - and as an organization - we have a commitment to help children grow up in a positive and stimulating environment. YDA works with schools, libraries, churches, the police, and other community groups, to create programs for youth development, educational programs, recreational activities and more. By close cooperation with other members of YDA, the organization works to fundraise, govern, monitor and promote the organization. To this end, Douglas D. Viviani spends the most part of his free time volunteering to help others. As he himself says, in his professional life he devotes his time to helping other people in the courtroom and this seems to flow into his personal life. After all, everybody requires help at some stage in their lives – either through friends or colleagues. Douglas D Viviani, Why I Volunteer

My name is Douglas D Viviani. I've been an attorney for almost 30 years. As you can imagine, I've seen a lot, and experienced many highs and lows. Being an attorney is rewarding. I studied hard, earned my law degree from St Johns University, and set up my practice in New York focusing on traffic violations. I am good at what I do, and I make my clients happy.

But, by far the most rewarding experience I have is working with the Youth Directions and Alternatives. Douglas D Viviani: The most active volunteer of the State of New York!

The balance of work life and personal life is increasingly becoming a priority for working professionals in the 21st century.  In our pursuit of happiness, we want to find fulfillment in work, without compromising the quality of our domestic lives.  But how do we achieve a healthy and happy balance?  What is the secret formula that allows us to work to live, rather than live to work?  I cannot prescribe a formula for everyone that would work for everyone – I can only recommend what has worked best for me, and hope that I can guide others on their path.  In my experience, I have found that volunteering is a highly effective way of finding fulfillment.

Volunteering and giving back to my community has been one of the most rewarding things I have done: for no one has ever become poor from giving.  In both my professional and private life I have chosen to participate in voluntary activities, because I wanted to enhance both aspects of my life, and become more fulfilled overall.  In some respects, volunteering reduces the amount of free time I have to spend with friends and family.  Yet on the other hand, it has made me a better person, so what precious time I do spend with loved ones, is always quality time.

For my local community, I serve as the president of the Board of Directors for the Youth Directions and Alternatives association.  The YDA is a youth empowerment organization that provides workshops, programs, and recreational activities for young people of the local community.  As the president of the Board of Directors, I help direct the vision of the organization in order to best meet the needs of the local community.  Without a doubt, working with young people gives me great personal satisfaction for being able to mentor and help them – something I wish I had more of when I was younger.

As a longstanding and hardworking lawyer serving the state of New York, I am a member of the New York State Bar Association, the largest one of its kind in the nation.  Together with other members, we maintain open discussions about law, facilitate the administration of justice, and educate the public about policies.  It is important to me that I take an active role in the development of American legal matters, because I want to contribute to a better and more harmonious society.
