Tropaeolum majus (nasturtium)

I like nasturtiums as much for the interesting star-shaped pattern on their leaves, as for their beautiful flowers. This plant is native to the Andes mountains from Bolivia to Columbia but is now grown in temperate gardens around the world. The original seeds were sent to Europe by a Dutch monk in 1684 from Peru. There are now many cultivars available in a variety of colors including creamy white, yellow, orange, red and maroon. Nasturtium flowers are edible with a mild peppery taste and they contain a small amount of vitamin C. This could be a perfect way to liven up a summer salad, don't you think? Bon Appetit!

By the way, some medical conditions (such as kidney disease and stomach ulcers) rule out eating nasturtiums. Kids shouldn't eat them either (choking hazard).

Lilium (lily)

Summer is fading fast and I think it's a good time to do a celebration of the lily. Time marches on in my garden and my yellow lilies are long gone. However I've encountered a number of handsome specimens of this flower in the past few weeks and I think this post represents the lily in all of it's color variations.

Personally, I like the orange tiger lily, Lilium lancifolium and the white Madonna lily, Lilium candidum the best.
