GoGo starts preschool in a couple weeks. I am bad at these parent moments that require parenting. I am trying to prepare her for getting to know a whole new group of families. I met her teacher yesterday and made sure she knew how GoGo speaks about family and to let me know if she starts asking questions or gets upset with kids asking her questions. Because the truth is, we all read books about families looking different but she doesn’t know another kid with only one parent. (Statistically, folks aren’t getting divorced until the kids are older so we will keep the light on for you over here when you are ready.) Waldorf claims that in the first 7 years of life kids are operating from a place of “the world is good.” So I was very blunt with her teacher and I said “I have not felt responsible introducing the concept of abandonment this early. I feel stressing she is not alone and is safe is the job right now. So I answer any questions honestly but age appropriately and I use her language she has come up with. And truthfully she has rarely asked questions so they might be coming.” But... right now? Mother’s Day 2019: GoGo finally ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Requested we bike to a park to eat it. Held it the whole ride in anticipation. Screamed at the top of the play structure “Thank you, for making me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! I need peanut butter and jelly!” I will not test my luck and will probably wait a year to make her another one.
