I'm aware of Magikarp's existence as a "Joke" Pokemon, but there is something about something small and weak evolving to a gargantuan behemoth that... speaks to me, in a way. Despite the silly design, and meme that it's been built on, there is something there that I find beautiful.

Hello.

You may have noticed this blog has been rather inactive over the past several months. I wish there was an easy way to explain this- trust me- but the truth is there’s been a lot going on behind the scenes that has made it difficult to be active.

First and foremost, we regret to say that one of our moderators (mod Magikarp) passed away around the time of the hiatus beginning (for the sake of privacy, we will not elaborate further as to the circumstances around their passing). We have been deliberating for months now as to how we should announce this (and our ability to do so has been compromised, due to circumstances which I will expand upon later) and have even considered shutting down the blog- however we felt that would be unfair.

Second, we have been experiencing extreme technical difficulties which have been making it nearly impossible to use the blog. They seem to have mostly cooled down (for now), but for a long period of time we frequently would find ourselves unable to make or reblog posts. Occasionally, we would find posts in the drafts which none of us had any memory of creating. We did consider making a new blog, but eventually Tumblr let us through again, so we’re keeping with this one for consistency’s sake.

Hopefully we can get back to posting as usual again. Thanks for all your patience.

our whole schtick with this blog might seem petty but we've got plenty of valid reasons for this even besides the whole, "artistic vision" stuff. NOWADAYS pokemon has to work on toys, anime, games, god knows what else, and they have to rush those devs into making games super quick and it results in them being BROKEN upon release. 3D just makes the process even LONGER!! id wager if modern pokemon just, released a 2D game for once we would have NO problems with this but NOW we're begging for unions and stretched out releases. think of the gameboy releases!! EVERY line of code working in tandem!! every bug a feature!! and NOW? its all gone to shit man. can we have anything

Something about the modern sprites that really bugs me is how flat they feel, I think. One advantage to 3D models over sprites is it’s a lot easier to have a variety of animations and interactions, since they don’t all have to be done by hand—but we really don’t see nearly enough of that in modern Pokémon games (at least in modern battles).

Although I don’t love the look in general, 3D models could at least be a way to have dynamic lighting, attacks, and reactions during battle, and to make Pokémon feel really alive. But instead, all 3D Pokémon really tries to be (for the most part) is a worse version of the 2D sprites. Maybe this is just me trying to make the best of a bad situation, but I feel like if they made the most of the potential 3D has, it wouldn’t be nearly as jarring a visual choice.

It’s just another reason why 2D Pokémon will (at least in terms of visuals, and I would argue in other aspects as well—though that’s a post for another day) always be superior to 3D Pokémon. At least, it will be as long as Game Freak and Nintendo continue to refuse to listen to fans and push out games as quickly as possible.
