As a couple moved to leave the bar Nic side stepped them to grab the now vacant stool. Working quick to order a glass of water that he’d been waiting to do for some time now. He was happy that the karaoke night was popular, even if that meant it was more crowded than he was used to. At the tap on his shoulder, he turned around confused thinking he’d see the couple returning to claim the seats. Instead it was Cassidy and he smiled easily, “No, come join me! How are you?”
“Nic! Hey, so sorry I didn’t recognize you from behind. This place is way too dark.” Cassidy sighed, easing into the seat beside him carefully. “I’m okay, working too much but that never changes.” She admitted with a self-deprecating smile. “Other than that not much. How about you?” the vet asked, her tone softening significantly as her features grew increasingly empathetic and attentive. “I’m sure you must be going through a lot still. It’s been too long since we got to talk. I’m sorry I haven’t been a better friend when you’ve needed it. The whole town really misses him.” She murmured, referring of course to his father.

Placed in a seat close to the edge of the bar, Scarlett waited patiently for her refilled Sprite to arrive. She’d been enjoying the event for a while now and was singing her voice off. Realizing how raspy her voice was, she knew it was time to settle down her vocal cords and give them a rest. Knowing her favorite soda would do the job, she held back and jumped slightly at the tap on her shoulder. “Oh, no, please sit,” The bartender quickly offered the woman the open seat beside her. “You came just in time. Someone is about to sing WAP and I’m assuming it’s going to be a little more than interesting.” She told her with a chuckle leaving her lips. “I love your outfit, by the way.”
Cassidy smiled gratefully, sliding into the seat as carefully as possible. The last think she needed to do was bump a person who was overly drunk and bring unwanted attention. She had to laugh at the mention of upcoming song selection. “I don’t see how it could be anything less!” The blonde admitted, waving down the bartender to order herself a drink. “Oh, thank you. That’s sweet of you to say. I spend so much time at work I feel like I have no idea what to wear out. But coming from someone as clearly stylish as you, well, it gives me hope.” The vet chuckled. “I’m Cassidy by the way. What’s your name?”

The veterinarian carefully weaved her way through the crowd in the hopes of finding an empty seat. She was late, par for the course really. Between her indecision about what clothes to wear and how busy the office had been today arriving on time hadn’t been in the cards. Mercifully she spotted an empty seat at the edge of the bar. Hoping not to startle them, the tapped on the shoulder of the person occupying the next seat over. “Hey, sorry. Is someone sitting here?” She asked politely.

Standing beside the woman in line, Derek felt a great sense of innocence float around her, which he wasn’t used to and the feeling made him a little uncomfortable. The only time he was innocent was when he was a young child and before he started to get into arguments. The innocence in him was long gone and vengeance and redemption replaced the vulnerable trait. When they approached the cashier, the MC gang member waited for his turn, but his patience was interrupted by the blonde’s realization. “I’m Derek, it’s nice to meet you,” He had a bad temper, but underneath that was a good heart that he showed when needed. “I’ll have a large coffee with no cream or sugar. Thank you.” Grinning lightly toward the cashier, the free man moved toward the waiting area. Arriving at the location, his feet halted and his dark hues landed back onto the beauty before him. “Sorry for not introducing myself earlier. As you can probably tell, I’m not much of a talker. What’s your name?”
Derek. Cassidy committed the name to memory as best one could without the proper caffeine intake. His coffee order was simple, no flairs revealing anything particular about his personality or preference. Just straight up coffee without the frills. Perhaps that said something about him in and of itself. “That’s okay! Not everyone is. Cassidy. Cassidy Jacks. I’m the town veterinarian.” The blonde offered in response with a small smile. There she went again, providing more information than had been asked for. Somehow she couldn’t help it. Cassidy overspoke when she was nervous and something about this Derek threw her off balance. The jury was still out on whether it was a positive or not. Thankfully the arrival of their drinks saved her from rambling any further. Turning, she surveyed the space before locating an empty table next to the window. She headed for it, settling into the seat with the back to the door. The vet got the feeling he’d likely want to see the exit. Just in case he felt the need to escape. It was only as Derek settled into his own chair that she noticed a patch on his jacket. Eyes narrowing, Cassidy studied the unfamiliar symbol for a moment. “What does that mean? if you don’t mind my asking.” The question was truly innocent. She hadn’t really heard about the MC coming to town.

“Good, good,” After regaining his balance, Derek was glad to hear that the woman was alright. He took in the small detail about heels but quickly brushed it away as it didn’t mean too much to him. Shoving his hands back into his pockets, he kept quiet and looked the woman over. She was attractive, that was obvious, and not injured, which was great for his probation. Ready to head into the coffee shop, his eyebrows rose when she spoke again. Pressing his lips together at the blonde’s offer, he had a time limit, but he’d be rude to turn down free coffee. “I am, and sure. Turning down an offer like that would make me insane.” Chuckling slightly, the gang member moved toward the door and opened it for his new acquaintance. “Ladies first.”
Cassidy felt relief flood her system and her shoulders relax as he responded affirmatively. She dipped her head in thanks as he opened the door and slipped inside. Thankfully the little coffee shop wasn’t too crowded. They stood in silence as they waited for their turn at the counter. Greeting the familiar barista the blonde proceeded to order. “And....I’m sorry I just realized I don’t know your name.” eyes widening slightly at the realization, a small flush of embarrassment landing on her cheeks. She turned back to the barista and just handed her an extra five dollars to cover the tall, dark, handsome stranger’s order. Clearly falling had taken Cassidy off her game, she was usually quite on top of details. Her detail-oriented nature was one of the traits that made her so well suited to being a vet.

Approaching the Cosmic Grind, Derek needed some caffeine in his system. He was going to run the cage fighting ring in an hour and a half, and before doing so, a large cup of coffee had to be devoured. Tucking his well-worn MC leather jacket close to his torso, the Latin-American male kept his eyes ahead and on the people passing him. In a matter of seconds, he saw an innocent woman falling and instantly reached his arm toward her way. Colliding his arm against her frame, he sighed in relief before letting her situate herself. “It’s fine, I’m fine,” as much as he hated talking, he had to reassure the blonde that the collision didn’t harm him, “are you alright? Did you break a heal or something?”
With the stranger’s assistance, Cassidy righted herself fully and brushed herself off. She shook her head, chuckling awkwardly at the question. “No, no. I never wear those things. Not really practical for work and not worth the pain.” the blonde explained, realizing halfway through he had probably only wanted a simple yes or no answer. Silencing herself, Cassidy finally focused enough to look him over. He was handsome, but in the kind of way that always made her nervous. Like there was something darker lurking under the surface. Shaking off the feeling the blonde spoke up again. “Thank you. I appreciate the help. Are you headed inside? If you are please let me buy you a coffee. It’s the least I could do after half-assaulting you in the street.” She hated to ever inconvenience anyone, even total strangers. It just never sat right.

Location: Outside the Cosmic Grind
@derekxvaldez
Cassidy was on a mission, a mission to drink at least two cups of coffee. The fact that it was New Year’s Eve was irrelevant to Mrs. Thompson’s cat needing surgery for a bladder obstruction. She’d just finished up and was in desperate need of caffeine. Like a horse with blinders, she paid little attention to the world not directly in front of her. Stumbling over a loose wrapper on the ground, she started to fall, landing awkwardly against a large figure mere steps away from the door to Cosmic Grind. “Crap! I’m so sorry!” She winced, trying to pull herself to her feet.

Occupation: Veterinarian
Faceclaim: Leah Pipes
ABOUT
Biography (references to abandonment and drug use)
Cassidy was born to free-spirited parents who were really still children at heart themselves. Dena and Johnny Jacks were traveling the country together visiting music festivals and enjoying trips both on the road and via ecstasy. When Dena unexpectedly fell pregnant, the pair took it in stride, looking at raising a child as another great adventure. The idea of settling down never entered the picture for the two who were much more focused on finding their next great journey.
Unfortunately, their excitement quickly deteriorated once Cassidy was born. Dena and Johnny were not ready to give up their party filled adventurous lifestyle for a child so the girl grew up being passed around to different relatives up until age 8. At this point, her grandmother began to fall ill and other relatives were tired of picking up D and J's slack. So, instead of communicating by postcard, she returned to her parents and lived in their 1982 baby blue Cadillac, criss-crossing the nation in search of festivals, great views, and a different city every night. The polar opposite of her live-and-let-live parents, Cassidy craved stability and by age 16 took matters into her own hands, by getting herself emancipated.
She moved into a quiet apartment complex in upstate New York where she was the youngest resident by at least 30 years. Finally in a stable place, she pursued her real dream of becoming a veterinarian by finishing high school and biding her time at a local SUNY school to earn an undergraduate degree in biological sciences. When Cassidy wasn't in school she was working, making ends meet to keep up her modest lifestyle where the biggest luxury was the library of books she began collecting. She was lucky enough to be accepted to Cornell University's veterinary program where she thrived, finally focusing on her true passion in life-helping those who cannot help themselves, man's best friends.
Directly after graduation Cassidy began searching high and low for a job and eventually ended up became the apprentice of Dr. Vernon Turner at his clinic in Burlington and Cleo’s roommate in the process. Unfortunately, two years in, Dr. Turner passed away due to an undiscovered defect in his cardiovascular system. With none of his extended family interested in taking over the clinic, it fell to Cassidy. She's doing her best to pick up the pieces and do the best job she can for the animals of Burlington which doesn’t usually leave her with room to consider a personal life.
