Hop Along - Get Disowned
Beginning with the strong acoustic song “Some Grace”, Hop Along starts the album off with a modest entrance. As it progresses, Frances Quinlan introduces you to the power of her vocals by weaving in an emotional angst that comes from her sudden changes in pitch and texture.
“Tibetan Pop Stars” and “Diamond Mine” picks up into the faster paced rock you might expect to hear from modern alternative rock bands, but it’s tracks like “Sally II” that head back to the more folk-like feel you’d expect from Quinlan.
The upbeat charge of “Kids on the Boardwalk” and “Young and Happy!” plays out not only in the change in melody and rhythm but also in Quinlan’s lyrics which recall the beauty and naivety of young love.
At moments in “Laments” I couldn’t help but get that heightened sense of awareness that makes the hairs along your neck stand up and your shoulders start to tingle. The lyrics and vocals, something playful yet painfully real, have the ability to stir emotions and spur on nostalgic memories.
Like eating a hard candy, you try to make it last by letting it sit in your mouth and by avoiding to chew it in order to somehow milk it of all enjoyment. However, shortly after starting you begin to scrape at the candy with your teeth until eventually you bite down and crunch the candy into tiny pieces. Very similar is the feeling of this album after several listens; there comes some kind of calmness and feeling of content by listening to the album all the way through, however you’re constantly fighting the urge to skip to the song with your favorite guitar riff or moving Quinlan vocals.
