The night of the fire we had caught the thing worming its way out of the well, crude oil spilling from those screaming, wretched jaws like liquid gold.

a couple years ago the eric carle museum of picture book art had an exhibit on diane & leo dillon who are responsible for so many iconic illustrations. i went back twice just to see the collection again. this is a sliver of their work— it’s hard to find high res images.

"Immature people crave and demand moral certainty: This is bad, this is good. Kids and adolescents struggle to find a sure moral foothold in this bewildering world; they long to feel they’re on the winning side, or at least a member of the team. To them, heroic fantasy may offer a vision of moral clarity. Unfortunately, the pretended Battle Between (unquestioned) Good and (unexamined) Evil obscures instead of clarifying, serving as a mere excuse for violence — as brainless, useless, and base as aggressive war in the real world."
Ursula K Le Guin at it again, being right as always

Promised love, autumn sun, lay your hand upon my cheek. Your veil will catch the wind– I cannot look long, but the lace-dapple sight, caught between falling leaves, will wind my heart for the winter. I know that we are springbound, bouquet of daffodils, but november is not yet a miser. Take this taste– take a sight– take, before time’s shadow sets us cold, whatever it is you will.

Sometimes we dream of things long past, see them in the corner of our eyes, catch a glimpse of something so missed, it hurts… And for a moment, just an instant, we are happily lost in an illusion.

I keep dreaming of physically impossible monolithic structures made out of a glassy stone like dull black marble or tarnished obsidian. I can always see the stars like the structures themselves are floating on the surface of a still lake that perfectly reflects the night sky. That or they're just floating in space.
