KH4 was announced in 2022.

And then, for a long time, nothing happened.

Three years and one month later, they gave us a small collage of jpgs, explicitly to promise us that the game wasn't also canceled.

Game development is a fucking trip these days.

It's honestly very interesting, looking at reactions. I feel like the game's development cycle is really working against it.

This is only our second-ever look at the game, and people seem intensely fuckin' tired of the semi-photorealistic "real world" gimmick already. It's the kind of thing that would have been a fun surprise (and more or less was, in the moment), but a "fun surprise" can't last three years and counting. So many of these commenters just want to see "classic" Kingdom Hearts again.

Like, you can do the episode where Buffy wakes up in the real world, and vampires don't exist, and she's just a normal girl, and no one's ever heard for the Slayer before. You can do that. That's fun.

But it's fun because last week was a normal episode, and next week is a normal episode, and this is just a cool, weird thing we're doing in the meantime. It's transient. It's an adventure.

You can't do that when people have been waiting 5-10 years for the next installment (and will have to wait another 5-10 years for the next one when this one is over).

That's the danger of doing a "fun experiment" for your series that really just makes your game look more generic in the grand scheme of things. "Sora goes to real-world Japan" is a weird, wacky thing until you start thinking about how many games set in real-world Japan we already have. "Sora goes photorealistic" is a genre-bending mindfuck until you think about how many games have been chasing that photorealistic high for three fucking generations at this point.

"Build" is an interesting command, though.

Also, those are some real sort of Nier-looking "shadow people" Heartless designs.
