🌷 — taking care of living things
That is, without a doubt, one of his greatest qualities. As a child, what interested him the most alongside history and mythology was the function of all kind of Pokémon and plants, finding it fascinating, so he knows very well how most of them live and what they need to be healthy, safe and happy. Even if he’s, of course, an expert when it comes to dragons, he can easily take care of any type of Pokémon (and he would only need advice on artificial Pokémon or machine-like steel-types, about which he doesn’t know that much). Of course, a volcano isn’t a place for all of them to live, but if he needs, he would move temporarily to Viridian’s deep parts to take care of grass-types, or to the Seafoam Islands for ice-types (though those are under Lorelei’s care so it’s not necessary). And he can easily provide plants of any kind anything they need to grow healthy. He still keeps some old books and notes he took from Blackthorn hidden so he can still revise now and then.
Human babies, though, that would be more difficult. He would need to research far more and lots of advices. And has no interest on doing so as an Elite, of course. But as an adult, with someone he loves? He would be the greatest father.
🌲 — surviving in the wilderness
THIS is his shit. As a child he spent more time in Viridian Forest than City, and Blackthorn is surrounded by pure wild nature. He hasn’t lived in a house since he was 13; he then lived 7 years in a volcano, then moved to the Whirl Islands for around a year (travelling through Johto first without bringing more than his ocarina, items for his Pokémon and some berries), and then stayed in the Eterna Forest without barely moving for another year, and from then on, travelled around the regions always coming back to Eterna in the end, until finally HGSS events happened. As a Champion? He lives wherever he feels better. Cerise is still a home for him, just like Viridian and Eterna forests. Until he’s 28 or 30, he hasn’t yet slept under a roof. Even if he was to spend a night in the Indigo Plateau, he’d just lay down on the grass or in the Vicory Road if it was cold, and sleep there. More than twenty years and counting in wilderness. He doesn’t plan on stopping.
He can get food easily, usually fruit and berries from the trees. His Pokémon hunt weaker Pokémon as it’s their nature, but the only times Wataru has given in and eaten Pokémon meat has been when the Pokémon had been killed by natural causes and he really needed it because he was really weak or ill. Regarding other food, like rice or bread, Agatha and Lorelei are usually the ones who buy it, because Lance is no good in cities, and Bruno would buy 300 cookies instead. When alone in the forest, he sometimes bought food in small stores in Eterna with money from battling young trainers with his new Pokémon (Gabite, Charmeleon and Pupitar), and as a Champion as well, he still does it, though now he can, more or less, handling more than 3 seconds in a city.
About water, he knows many natural springs in mountains of all regions from which he can get drinkable water, so he often travels there with his Pokémon and fill dozens of barrels to have water for days.
Cold hasn’t been a problem during his Elite days, as he only needed to get close to the crater to feel like it was an endless July or August. However, in Eterna, the weather was far colder, and even as an Elite, he spent many nights in Viridian. He has some capes which are thicker and can protect him from the cold like a blanket, while his Pokémon have no problem with it, as they have inner fire able to keep them cold, or they are rocks, or live in the sea. However, winters in Sinnoh was really difficult for him, and he ended up having to retreat to the Old Chateau most of nights during January and February because he just couldn’t handle it, firstly because he only had one cape (the rest were burned or torn), and secondly because, well, he’s no good at all at handling the smallest bit of cold. Of course, an abandoned mansion wasn’t the best place to get warmer, but at least he could find protection from cold wind, rain and snow, and Charizard’s flame and heat could do the rest. Ghosts were no problem. He lived with Agatha for seven years. He’s really over it.
But in general, he really feels far more at ease in natural, wild environments than human ones. Human ones feel fake and suffocating, and give him a kind of claustrophobic feeling. He slowly gets used to them, of course, but he will always prefer sleeping under (or on) a tree, or in the caves of an active volcano.

📥⌛️
📥 — organization
That’s something he’s actually good at. Lance doesn’t own much thing, but he always knows where they are. Of course, it’s not like he has a desk, shelves or anything like that, but all the items for his Pokémon, his berries, the food, clothes, he knows the exact place of everything and always leaves it where he picked it from. Basically, because it’s a need. Cerise’s caves are like a big maze, and some things need to be protected from the extreme heat inside some of them. His belongings are spread between some different spots, usually hidden inside a hollow wall, but they are where they must. Same goes for all the notes on things he has researched. And during the time he lives in Eterna Forest, he also hides it where only he and Pokémon in the forest would find it.
As a child, he was already very organized, mostly because he used to check the notes and books a lot to remember everything he could, so he wanted to be able to find everything easily (and it’s a quality his grandfather always insisted on keeping). As a Champion as well, even if unused to a rational human organization of things, he keeps all paperwork and archives as tidy as he can.
⌛️ — time management
That’s a weak point of his, mostly because no matter what schedule he pretends to keep, he might fall asleep in the middle of it for either half an hour or five hours. His sleep is completely irregular due to the use of his forest powers, and due to that, usually he has no idea of what day it is, or what hour exactly, only guiding himself for the position of the sun and the light. So he’s unable to work with time. He just knows he has to research, then train, then train more, and in the middle of that, take care of Pokémon and play with them, and sleep somewhere between all of that. He only remembers to eat whenever he’s hungry or Agatha reminds him. He does whatever he feels and whatever he can. And somehow he still manages to survive and get shit done.

🎉 — hosting parties
Tumblr media
“what”
Parties are, for him, something stupid. He certainly wouldn’t host one. He didn’t enjoy them as a kid because he would rather be training or studying about Pokémon, and he doesn’t enjoy them as an adult. The concept of “party” looks fake to him. Pokémon reunite and have fun whenever it happens, without needing a host. And he’s supposed to reunite with people, give them food, provide a space to, and make it a fun thing? He wouldn’t know how to. He doesn’t like being with more than three or four people around in the same place, and he doesn’t know how to make a situation fun. He prefers calm conversations. Not parties.
The more Wataru knows people, though, the more comfortable he is with being in parties. But hosting them? Naaa

😇 — following rules
Since rules are a human invention and only benefit human beings, Lance couldn’t care less about them. If Lance is told to do or not do something, he probably just goes and does it only to show them he couldn’t care less about rules and their supposed authority. Destroying humans means destroying their laws. Also, he doesn’t care about battle rules (turns, four attacks moveset, all that stuff). Legal battles are for kids, not for serial killers.
Plus, he finds all the laws that benefit Pokémon simply insuficient, so he wouldn’t even defend those, he would make them more strict. That’s what he ends up doing as a Champion. When being so, of course, he has to follow some rules, want it or not. And he does for a while, at least regarding battles. He doesn’t steal because he has no need to, he doesn’t kill because he doesn’t want to, but not because there’s a law that says “do not do the thing”.
In the end, what he wants is to make the rules, and change them until they are as protective as they must for Pokémon. For humans, he won’t touch a line. It’s not his job.

It felt like Steven was going to say something else before that brief pause, and Wataru wondered the reason. However, his thoughts soon focused back on steel-type Pokémon. In all honestly, even if they weren’t created by mankind, they still were probably the kind of Pokémon less tied to nature, at least the common idea of 'nature’. Surely, metals were still part of it, and even one of the first Pokémon to exist was, indeed, a steel dragon, yet a whole body of steel, like, for example, Metagross’... It wasn’t that normal. For which reason Wataru had always felt so far away from steel-types— even if not as far as from humans, and it only lightned his interest even more.
“I’d be very thankful if they agreed on meeting me. It would be a great chance for me to—” To finally talk to well trained steel-type he’s not familiar with. And maintain a casual conversation with them. He stopped himself soon enough, before saying something that would sound stupid to anyone who didn’t know about the powers of the forests. Or maybe he did? “To be able to see one closely and feel such a great power, different from that which I’m used to.
And indeed, if I ever have the chance to roam Hoenn’s routes, I’ll try to find some of those dragons! Horseas can be found in my regions as well, my cousin’s first Pokémon was one. And I trained a Trapinch for a while, but he was free, so I couldn’t keep him with me. I hope to count with a Flygon and a Salamence in my team.”
Tumblr media
“Team Rocket’s plans to control Arceus were insane. Though I wish he had been the one to hurt me badly, I must say. It was one of those Rockets. Far less honorable, I’m afraid. Still, I had the chance to fight against Palkia. And seeing two other criminals fight the other other dragons in the Creation Trio to save the world while Johto’s three Dex Holders handled Arceus’ rage— especially Gold, it felt like a dream. It was terrifying, but unforgivable. Probably one of the best memories I’ll ever have, no matter how close to death it all was.
Of course, Arceus wouldn’t have let those idiots control his power if he wasn’t ressented by us all...” He was beating around the bush, he realized. He apologized with a nervous smile, looking down for a second before his eyes met Steven’s again. “Well, everything was solved and it’s all better than before. I assume you have some stories regarding criminal organizations here in Hoenn as well. Would it be a bother if I asked about them? Were their aspirations as foolish as Rocket’s?”
Tumblr media
Steven smiled and returned the handshake with his own before straightening out again and placing his hand back to his side. Truthfully he hadn’t seen Wataru’s image before, so he wasn’t expecting someone with rather vibrant hair. Still though, they look pretty strong and champion worthy. “Same to you too, I actually haven’t been able to attend champion reunions like this before, so it’s quite new to me.” Steven admitted with a small smile. He guessed that he had been living under a rock after all these years anyway.
So his assumption and the words upon the wind were true then, which pleased the steel user very much. Dragons were hard to come by in Hoenn unless one had patience to train them. “Is that so? I would love to learn more about them! Actually, now that I think of it, I believe our region has several. Flygon, Salamence, Kingdra and all.” A small list out of a great pool of specimens, really.
“Ah! They’re actually quite fascinating! Especially when you-” He paused for a moment- no, Steven. Now’s not the time to go on a tangent. Keep it short and sweet. “…when you look into what makes them unique. Studying them actually makes their mysteries even more understandable as to why they act the way they do, so perhaps I could introduce them to you at some point!” The silverette did have his pokemon on him at all times, although bringing them out into a room like this seemed rather cumbersome.
Tumblr media
“Stories?” He started as he paused and rethought of what his fellow trainers had gossiped to him about. The stories he remembered hearing were ones of how trainers either won or failed their battles against Wataru, but he did hear others along the wind. “Ah yes… that, I did hear about.” A frown on his face showed his concern as he looked at Wataru. “I heard how Arceus had run rampant and hurt you pretty bad. In fact, that’s all the news we got here until Arceus returned everyone back to where they belonged.” Steven had to think of the story again to remember right. “…I can’t imagine how I would’ve felt…the god of all pokemon. It must’ve been terrifying.”

      “Huh——”
So this man knew him as Lance. Well, he shouldn’t be surprised. He was Sootopolis’ Gym Leader after all, right? It was said that man was the strongest of the leaders in Hoenn, and he had heard some comparing his Pokémon’s power to the Elite Four’s and even the Champion’s, his best friend. Well, that was what Karen told him at least. He was starting to thank her for her gossip talks. Anyway, it wasn’t strange for such an important man to be informed.
“Yeah, well. My real name is Wataru, though some people still do call me Lance, yes. Don’t worry. And you’re Wallace, right? This city’s Gym Leader.”
He just wondered how much he knew, besides that name of his. The more people he met, the biggest his fear of parts of his past somehow becoming public knowledge was.
Tumblr media
‘ it is… lance, correct? ‘ he was rather unfamiliar with the kanto elite four, as sad it was, but due to his duties in hoenn, he rarely left. his knowledge stemmed from the media and word of mouth, and judging by the bright hair, the name fit the face.
or should he say, that intense hair.
‘ pardon my hesitance, i am always learning. ‘ his milotic curled about his waist, her eyes focused on the small man in front of them.

Plus it’s important that the Leagues are not controlled by the Champions but rather these dudes (in this case Hoenn’s):
Tumblr media
Dudes who probably do mostly what they want to organize the league, and I don’t know about the other regions, but Kanto and Johto’s must be pretty corrupt, because they allowed Giovanni, LT Surge, Sabrina and Koga to be Gym Leaders, while it became pretty clear they were not Good Shit. I see the Indigo League’s bosses as dudes who try to cover up any criminal accident and do as nothing happened by giving them positions of power as an excuse for them to redeem, for which Johto’s Elite Four is a thing and Wata being the Champion is a thing. It’s probably them the ones who make the rules regarding battles, catching Pokémon, their treatment, etc.
I’ve always thought all Champions should just take advantage of their power and popularity to take over the League and be the ones to make the rules. It would make everything more fair for Pokémon. (Which is what Wataru wants and ends up doing but man it would be cool to see all of them doing the riot thing). Like really, the world would be a better place if the Champions ruled president-style.

//Honestly Wataru kind of owes it to the other Champions being one himself, because the reason the Kanto and Johto leagues united as the Indigo League and stablished a stable Elite Four and Champion was to imitate the other region’s leagues’ proceedment. (This is not canon since we haven’t really seen him become the Champion or anything in the manga only buying 10 fucking capes instead, but I see it as possible and decided to go with it for my portrayal of Lance since I started roleplaying him which has been for a while)
Like, we know Hoenn’s one first comes with the tournament between challengers, and then the one who wins, instead of becoming the champion automatically, must defeat the Elite Four and the current Champion, making the person who holds the title even more difficult to reach and beat, and they can hold said title and position for longer. Seeing Sinnoh’s Elite Four, it probably works like that there as well, and Unova and Kalos might as well (??? I haven’t read their arcs yet to be honest so I can’t tell).
Kanto and Johto, however, only had the tournament part, as Kanto’s Elite Four was a (secret) criminal organization everyone saw as a group of unbeatable trainers instead that used to challenge Kanto’s young champions (who mysteriously never came back), and Johto didn’t have an Elite Four until Will, Karen, Koga and Bruno decided to stick up together and work for the league.
