So I impulsively purchased Horizon Zero Dawn: The Complete Edition after work today because I have no self control and I’m so excited to start it because I know almost nothing about the storyline and have only seen a little of the gameplay so it’s like an exciting brand new world for me. Raphael Adler is the result of being born into better circumstances and then spending the entirety of his life ridiculed and belittled for supposedly not working as hard and not being as good as others in the treasure hunting field because of the net worth he was born with regardless of how hard he actually worked or how much effort he actually put in which all snowballed into the insecure, short tempered, glory seeking rage monster willing to die than leave behind Avery’s treasure or let anyone else have any of it.

adventures of sam drake, the “cool uncle” (part two)

here we are, back at it again with more of those uncle sammy feels. for those of you who missed it, here’s part one.

by the time her tenth birthday rolls around, sam’s starting to slow down a bit, not that he’ll ever admit to it. it’s not that he’s in bad shape. between the workout routine he established over his thirteen years in panama and just the nature of the job, he’s still in good shape. hell, great shape compared to a lot of men his age. most people still don’t believe he’s past 50 and he rarely tries to convince them of the truth. but he still tends to smoke more than he should and there’s an ache in his left side that’s never really left him, a phantom reminder of the bullets shot into him. not to mention victor’s echoing complaints of “being too old for this bullshit”. without either of them discussing it, the jobs start to become more spread out, the downtime being longer and more relaxed. despite all of the years chasing the adventures and the treasures and the mysteries to solve, sam doesn’t complain about the quiet he finds for himself as they take a step back from their adrenaline filled lives.

he’s taken up residence in new orleans, not too far from where elena and nathan had been set up when he first tracked down his brother, when a skype call from cassie turns into an interrogation into the drake brothers more colorful history. it seems his precocious little niece has finally found the pieces of the family backstory and isn’t too thrilled that her favorite uncle never told her about finding the long lost pirate treasure. or the fact that the scars she was lead to believe was from some animal attack on an expedition was really the remnants of a prison break gone awry. he spends over an hour on the call with her, promising to be completely honest about all of his tales going forward, something that he’s not so sure nathan will appreciate. but it leaves cassie satisfied which is good enough for him.

by the time his sixtieth birthday rolls around (goddamn did he not expect to live to see that birthday), he and victor are fully retired from their action packed life. the squid’s shacked himself up down in cuba, doing his best to stick to the promise of no more smoking and focus more on the pretty bartender thirty years his junior and the vintage cars he keeps buying and fixing up. sam’s invested in a house boat, taking to sailing wherever the winds take him and winding up with nathan and elena about four or five months out of the year. he’s still on the outer fringe of the business, offering his services as a translator or historian. but going out into the field isn’t much his style. cassie keeps coming to him in search of more stories, more details about the life he and her father led back in the day, about how they went from a couple of orphans in boston to notorious con men down in south america. (okay, notorious might be stretching it but he likes to see the fascination in her eyes when he tells the stories his way.)

the kid’s already smarter than her dad at fifteen, something that blows his mind because he always thought nathan would be the smartest kid he’d ever know. not nearly as much of a pain in his ass though so he’s all good with it. and her list of skills is quite colorful for a kid who was supposed to be kept as far away from the more criminal type activities. she can lift someone’s wallet, pick a lock, drive a stick, break someone’s nose, disassemble and clean a 9mm and sail a boat. thanks to ragtag group of criminals, explorers, and ex-soldiers who’ve helped raise the girl, she’s got all the skills to make a name for herself in the business and that in itself is a little scary. he never thought twice about involving nathan in whatever scheme was going to get them closer to solving the mystery of henry avery but the idea of cassie running off and trying the same things they’d done at fifteen is a little terrifying for him. 

its not so much that she needs a babysitter anymore when nathan and elena are off on a trip that’s a little too risky for her tag along on and more that they get peace of mind knowing someone’s in the house with their baby girl in case something goes wrong. and sam’s more than happy to be the one to stick around with cassie for the three months his brother will be in the jungles of peru, working at a riskier site than they’ve been at in a while. what he’s not so happy about is the phone call at three in the morning from the local authorities saying that his niece isn’t still safely tucked away in bed and is actually in a cell at the local precinct, brought in for breaking and entering. he hasn’t felt this kind of panic since the first time nathan got jammed up and locked away with out sammy there to keep him safe. he’s positive he breaks half a dozen driving regulations to get to the station as fast as he does and the sheepish look of faux innocence cassie offers him is so familiar it makes his stomach twist. she’s every bit her father’s daughter and in this moment it has him panicking rather than laughing. 

in a strange twist of fate, its the family reputation that actually keeps her out of jail rather than being taken seriously - that and a spotless record and the fact that she’s still a minor. sam’s prepared to raise hell and back to keep her from anymore trouble than she’s already been in for the night but it turns out the arresting officer is a fan of elena’s and is willing to let this one slide since no one was actually injured and nothing was actually damaged in the process of breaking in. if nothing else, the owner of the museum has a reason to look into new security now that a teenager has managed get through the first few lines of defense. it doesn’t change the fact that his heart is still hammering twenty minutes later when they’re both back at the house or the fact that he’s digging around in his bag for the carton of cigarettes he’s managed to avoid for the last seven months after a brief relapse last new years. 

he’s got one between his lips, hands shaking with the mixture of adrenaline and fear and anger and pride and a million other goddamn emotions he can’t handle all at once as he fumbles with his lighter. and then he hears that soft little voice, unsure and a little worried, like she’s eight years old again and scared of what’s coming next and something in him breaks. before either of them can think, he’s got her by the arm, pulling her gangly frame tight against his chest as the unlit cigarette falls to the ground. he’s crying, the panic that came from the initial phone call finally getting the best of him, and she’s right there with him, most likely the fear of what’s to come because of her first venture into a world she only knows from stories. but there’s no reprimands, no punishment, no yelling or anger. just a scared sam making her promise she’ll never do that to him again. she promises. 

eight years later, cassie will break that promise but it’ll be with her own team of thieves and criminals and adventurers, closely following all the lessons her family has taught her over the years. and when she comes home to her uncle sam, telling him her own tale of excitement and danger, he’s proud of her. even if it still scares the shit out of him.

okay so nonsense rambling of the evening but can we talk about how sully’s hair is always some perpetual form of slicked back starting when he’s introduced to nate in the 90s all the way to the epilogue relationship roughly thirty odd years later. and how when we meet Sam all grown up, first in panama and then at jameson marine, his hair is also styled slicked back, something very different from his style as a teenager. and it’s completely normal for a persons style to evolve as they age and grow. but what if sam’s hairstyling has something to do with his baby brother’s new partner when he gets out of jail in colombia? what if sam gets out and meets victor and sees how his brother looks up to the older man and after being the only person nathan’s needed for the last decade he can’t help but feel some insecurity? and what if whether he realizes it or not he winds up emulating victor in some ways, trying to regain his position as the sole figure in nathan’s life once more? and thus we get the slicked back hair on sam for the rest of his adult life.

Is there anyone out there with the photoshop magic who could gif Sam during the post credits scene of Lost Legacy when they’re all eating pizza?? Or if it’s been done, point me in the direction of the post? Because that scenes so cute to me and I’ve seen Chloe and Nadine in that scene on here but not Sam and he was such a dweeb in the scene.
