It's always lovely to find a fic that is in my bookmarks and is also on a fest podficcable? airtable as realised that Watch The Castles Burn wasn't going to be an option for me to enter for the Wireless fest but this lovely, dreamscape fic was! My problem with WTCB was that I wouldn't be able to enter the podfic with its song prompt. Although there was no way that I would touch the song prompt for this fic with a barge pole which was Lana Del Rey's Once Upon A Dream - not that I dislike the song but anything Disney related I'm going to avoid. It seems to me that the corporations that protect their copyright strongest are the ones who have the murkiest past wrt infringement.

The obvious music choice would be for Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty - given that it's the source of the animated film's soundtrack, lo and behold just barely out of the copyright in time for the release of the animated film back in the 50s?? The way that Draco has so many different experiences within Harry's dreamscape made me think of him being on a fairground ride with someone else at the helm - which is why I liked the idea of using a music box rendition of Sleeping Beauty's Waltz through the fic, I can see Draco sitting astride a Merry Go Round horse with the ride slowly going out of control with the sound of the music gradually warping. I think one of the joys of learning a hobby is all the different processes that you discover and it was fun to mess around with the musical interludes on audacity which are all the same but with different effects layered on: change in tempo, pitch, distortion etc - reflecting the stability of Harry's dreamscape.

I noticed that with this podfic, I had become a lot more comfortable with my Harry's voice particularly after recording Watch the Castles Burn and the long podfic that I did prior to that, as I noticed that I didn't dread the dialogue exchanges in this fic. Recording dialogue and if employing voices, I get concerned that what is obviously to me a different speaker isn't necessarily clear to a listener. I noticed now that dialogue is a favourite of mine to read - often a writer's characterisation really comes through - and an angry/grumpy Harry is always a joy ^.^

One reason why I love this fic is harryromper's Hermione because she's such a believable extension of my canon perception of Hermione. I'm in the minority I think as I'm not a fan of canon Hermione - there's so much hypocrisy in her words and actions that, for me, really reflects JKR. I can see her taking the high ground and making Harry promise to do what she wants - a repeat of the DA club both when she pushes him to 'run' it and the judgement that she enacts without really considering Harry's agency and wants: I will admit that I don't touch the books so I may have mis-remembered. There's a ruthlessness and callousness to those she does not care about that people seem to ignore and the prescription of altruistic motives to her actions is something I consider ludicrous. Plus there's an element of 'white saviour' to canon Hermione with her S.P.E.W. that always makes me feel uncomfortable and the lack of proper follow through in the subsequent books annoys me no end.

One thing that is striking is harryromper's handling of Harry's struggle to accept himself and the need to hide - which as a Thatcher child who grew up in the 80s and 90s is so understandable, when I think about the homophobic attitudes that were much more overt and prevalent in my childhood compared to today. Coupled with the belief that the Dursleys would be highly critical of anyone not aspiring to the 2.4 children status; and the huge expectation placed on Harry's shoulder by the Wizarding World - that struggle is so sensitively written. I could be wrong in my assumptions on certain fics but where I have particularly felt a character's struggle to accept their identity, particularly their sexual one, I often feel that the author must be familiar with the social landscape of my childhood.

Drafting this and I just got sent this link by my sibling, being a cis-het woman I will never understand the fear and shame that plagues those unable to 'be' themselves fully - it's just so heartbreaking but so important that everyone speaks out against repression and censorship; so that people are free to express themselves fully without fear and repercussion.

My newest Drarry (and Severitus!) fic has been revealed! This was posted for the 2024 Severitus Big Bang, a fest celebrating the father-son relationship between Harry Potter and Severus Snape, in all forms (bio parent, father figure, mentor, etc.). I explored an alternate reality where Severus married Lily, not James, and the ways in which that might have led to Harry's life being drastically different from how it was shown in canon.

If he slipped on a bar of soap and got an eyeful of Malfoy’s undercarriage, he was going to leave, just leave, Apparate right through whatever wards were blanketing the campus and damn the Trace and all threats concerning it. Blessedly, though, he bumped up against one of the long benches fronting the stalls and settled down, focusing on the far wall while Malfoy told him all about the evolution of the Snitch from bird to ball and then moved on to a lecture concerning the different broomstick manufacturers and their respective strengths and weaknesses. “And frankly, the Nimbus line hasn’t matched the quality of the Firebolt since—towel.” Malfoy snapped his fingers at him. “Towel, Potter.” “Summon it yourself.” “With what wand?” “The one you’ve got up your ass…” Harry grumbled beneath his breath.

Malfoy splays out further down on the mattress, where the ceiling slopes too close, laying with his long legs sprawled. He looks absurdly pale in just his slinky, thin pants, nearly glowing, propped up with the assistance of his single pillow. The amount of times Harry has slept here, with his head on his own bundled up hoodie all because Malfoy only has the one pillow is clinically stupid in itself. He’s fished a lead out from the crack behind the mattress and it hangs slack between his hands, the color not the same as the collar’s. It’s a bright sardonic red, but the look in Malfoy’s eyes is a perfect match, anyway, another closed loop around Harry’s throat.

Notes: This was truly a labour of love and I had such a great time writing it! I've watched RWRB no less than 50 times and read the book over three or four times at this point and every single time, all I can think about is how drarry-coded Alex and Henry are. This fic is HEAVILY inspired by Casey McQuiston's work and combines some of my favourite parts from both the book and the movie, adding back in some quintessential characters like June, who were unforgivably erased from the narrative for the film. Musings: [Podfic] Pinky Promises are Powerful Magic by megyal

7th recorded/3rd shared podfic. I often find that I go down a tag rabbit hole and this delightful find was a result of going down the potion mishap/deage tag; often return to it whenever I've read a fic where Harry's childhood is particularly hard reading.

I was really fortunate that had recently discovered the wonders of @longdaytogo's artwork who kindly allowed me to use one of their drawings for the cover - there's such a sweetness and innocence that really matches the ickle Harry in the fic.

The way megyal portrays Harry as a child from his mannerism, the directness of a child is so delightful. Also I think this fic started my love of Harry being called 'sweetheart', I expect everyone has their hates and loves of pet names. I can't abide 'baby' which come from the fact that a younger member of family is called that by the rest of us; so it's personal cringe when I see it in fics used as a term of endearment between lovers.

Also I have a love of sentient buildings and the casual throw-in to remind the reader that they are in the magical world such as the crayons - what child wouldn't love their pictures coming alive?

There's such a fine line where your heart is breaking for Harry as he inadvertently reveals the abuse and expectations that he faced as a child and then the joy and warmth you feel as he receives love and care from Draco and his elves - it's so delicately, wonderfully written and then tied up with the looming threat of the neo-Death Eaters; such an amazing balance achieved in the fic.

This has been such an amazing experience with my good friend @mallstars, whose writing has captivated me since I first read their fic Save the Date and immediately dmed them on discord to rave about it. I am so honored and thankful to have been a part of this, and so proud of the work we did.
