BLOG #6
This week was an extremely exciting week! As I have already said, I attended the National Council for Behavioral Health conference Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday I had the chance to get settled into my office. My boss says, "There are two things we need to take care of: One, get you an e-mail address, and two, get you business cards." I thought I was hearing things! He goes on to say, "Lets call you 'Senior Legislative Representative', how does that sound?" That sounds AMAZING! So, I walk across the street, order myself 100 business cards and now I officially work for Guide Consulting Services. A client of ours has taken interest to a report for Congress pertaining to SAMHSA. My job is to take these 64 pages of legislation and turn them into 5 pages! Not that this is beyond me, I've summarized legislation many times before, in my Constitutional Law class, Political Theory, etc. It's just that this feels so much more, prestigious.
Friday morning, I had the opportunity to attend a Mental Health Liaison Group committee meeting at the American Psychological Association. Basically what happens at these meetings, is a bunch of different organizations and their board members come together once a month to discuss the current legislation on the table. There was an extensive discussion about the White House event that took place this past Monday, concerning behavioral health. Bradly Cooper was in attendance, along with Glenn Close.
With lobbying, there's a lot of down time. What I mean by that, is that there are days when we do not have committee meetings, conferences, or Capitol Hill events. Aside from those things, we are reading legislation, reading the news, contacting the interest groups we represent, and e-mailing...an enormous amount of e-mailing.
Aside from working, on Wednesday evening my neighborhood puts on movies in the lawn. There are food venders and clusters of people from all different walks of life. Since it was raining Thursday evening, I stayed in with a few other TWC interns and watched the NBA playoff game. Friday evening, my best friend came into the city, and what we had planned to do was stay in our PJ's and watch movies. But, of course being young and restless, we had to go on an adventure. We went to the Jefferson Memorial. It was the best decision! Seeing the memorial at night, without tourists, was peaceful. I'm loving my job, this city, and everything it entails more and more each day!

Monday mornings...just saying those two words is dreadful but not for me, not for my Monday morning. On Friday I received a call from my boss informing me that today I will accompany him to a conference with The National Council for Behavior Health. Guide Consulting Services and several congressmen, democratic and republican, are working to pass the Excellence Act. It was put into motion after the Newtown shootings.
"The Excellence in Mental Health Act would allow up to 1.5 million more Americans living with addiction and mental health needs, including 200,000 returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, to get the care they require. This important piece of legislation is sponsored by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Roy Blunt (R-MO) and was introduced on Capitol Hill in the wake of the Newtown tragedy." - thenationalcouncil.org
I am extremely excited although my boss, Al, informed me that I might find this conference boring until I start to get acquainted with them. It's a two day event, so after tomorrow I'll write back on how I enjoyed it.
This weekend I spent quality time with my best friend Lex and her beautiful family. I attended their church, Park Valley Church, and had an amazing Sunday dinner (crab legs, lobster tail, clams, mussels, potatoes, shrimp...be very jealous!).

Today was our official orientation. We met the core people of TWC that make this program such a wonderful program. Aside from having, basically, a full-time internship we have a civic engagement project and a class to take. I sat in on meetings for civic engagement projects that dealt with Educational Improvements, Immigration Rights, and Veteran Affairs. At the end of the day, I signed up for Veteran Affairs. With this project, I will be helping combat veterans reintegrate back into their home life after war. These Vets are either physically wounded or mentally. They absolutely love seeing young adults show interest in them, so I am actually really excited to see what's in store for me (I also saw pictures of TWC interns and Vets playing flag football on the Nat'l Mall so that's a plus!)
The classes are taught once a week, mine is Monday evenings, and it's a Strategic Communications class. Throughout this course, I will be able to learn the dynamics of how to effectively relay issues concerning the government to "the people" without a bias. Since communications is my minor, I thought this would be an extremely interesting and helpful course.
In other news, I live in the neighborhood of NoMa. It's considered "up-and-coming". Which means, there are nice parts....and then there are some not-so nice parts. I'll admit, I like living here. Mostly, people just see D.C. as how it's portrayed in the movies, like most cities, but I'm glad I am getting a chance to see, feel, and hear the real life of D.C. Across the street from my apartment complex the neighborhood put on a free live jazz performance with food and drinks. On Wednesday evenings there will be movies played on the lawn a block away for free, and I love free things, so I will definitely be doing that!
The past two days have been filled with so much fun and excitement. I am meeting tons and tons of awesome people from all walks of life. I love how diverse this program is. Tonight I embarked on a walk to the Capitol with two of my roommates and another girl I get along with really well. On our way to the Capitol, we walked past Gonzaga University. Overall, I am so happy here...I feel at home.

I MADE IT!!!! I am all moved into the big city! My apartment...amazing! My roommates...adorable! My life...awesome! I cannot get a smile off my face :) Today I unpacked, had lunch at a great soulfood restaurant (ate fried catfish for the first time), and rode around on the metro with my roommates and some other girls. The people I have met so far are wonderful! Everyone seems just as excited I am to be here. I have three roommates they're from Canada, Alabama, and New Jersey! I love the metro but I did not realize how expensive it was! That was definitely a shocker...looks like I'll be walking the majority of my way around the city (it'll be good for the tush!).
Tomorrow, our day is packed full of meetings and seminars, but I cannot complain! I cannot wait to dive right in! It's getting late. Look for another post later in the week!
Goodnight <3

I received placement at a wonderful internship today in DC. I will be working along side Al Guida at Guide Consutling Services, Inc. He's a one man show, which means I'll be getting an abundent amount of one-on-one time with a Lobbyist (my DREAM job!). Al has informed me that I will be doing everything he is doing. If he's making copies, I'm making copies. If he's working on legislative paperwork, I'm working on legislative paperwork. If he's meeting with a client, I'm meeting with a client. Okay, I think you get the picture. So basically, IT'S THE PERFECT INTERNSHIP!!! I'll admit I was getting nervous, even a little discouraged, but everything has worked out beautifully! I cannot wait for Wednesday, t-minus 5 days!

Hello Friends & Family!
This just an introduction post to my adventure. I have been accepted to The Washington Center (TWC is how I'll reference it) Summer Internship program. Through this program I will be placed into an internship, by my wonderful mentor, who has taken my requests into consideration for my placement. With that being said, I have requested to work in a Congressman's office or in a Lobbying firm (being a Lobbyist on K St. is my ultimate dream!) Along with working a full time job, I will be taking a college course taught by a professor from American University. And lastly, I will be completing a Civic Endeavor Project through an organization of my choice.
I am so extremely excited for this experience. I have been offered an amazing opportunity and I plan on taking advantage of everything that comes my way. I cannot wait for move in day; May 29!
Look forward to my next post then and thank you for following me on this beautiful journey!
